GT and Toriyama

Post by Dayspring » Sun Jun 27, 2004 12:39 am

When TOEI approached Toriyama to do character designs for GT, which of the following situations was it more like?

1) TOEI: We need you to come up with some sketches to match this plot. It's for a third Dragonball anime!

or

2) TOEI: We need you to come up with some ideas for a plot for a third Dragonball anime. Also, could you do some sketches so we can better visualize what you're saying?

PLEASE say it's more like situation 1! Otherwise Toriyama-sensei was responsible for the crappier part of the Grand Tour saga. :x

I'm pretty sure it's number 1. That's what I've gathered from all the info sites I've been to. Even if it was situation 2, it would just be basic ideas, and the crappy-ness would be from Toei's interpretation of them and the exclusion of the other characters.

Ya, I'd say even if it was choice 2, Toriyama was still barely involved. What I've always read is that he just did some of the initial character sketches and I believe a few conceptual designs. Even then I always firgured the conceptual designs were based on what TOEI gave him as to what they wanted the series to be about.

B-kun: "What?"
Jerseymilk: "I see Fangirls."

Not if you could see the specified notes for the designs. It looks more like if sitch 2 is accuarate, then Toriyama did the ideas for planets Monmars (giant planet) and Khara (dessert planet). He's also the one who named Gill, but TOEI switched his name from Ojama to what it is now.
