Charming Character Discussion

Post by Chibi Jesus » Mon Sep 10, 2007 1:56 am

Hello everyone! I am Chibi Jesus, and, well, you probably don't know me very thoroughly.... You have no idea as to why I'm here, and I feel it's a bit rude to simply jump into a discussion with you all and withhold everything about myself. I did give a proper introduction earlier on in the suggusted board (I know it seems a bit off-topic here, but I'd simply like to open myself to everyone else while having a fun little discussion'^^).

I'm really serious about becoming an active and helpful member, and I hope to make lots of friends during my stay! You're all such awesome, kind-hearted people, and I just want to let you know that I really admire that...

Now, onto the discussion!

We all have our absolute favorite characters - characters that we profoundly admire, be it just for the simple fact that we can relate to them. I know it's weird, but I feel one reason we grow on a manga or anime series is the reflections we see of ourselves in the story. We may also like characters based upon their physical appearance, abilities, personality traits, etc. Whatever it is that makes you cherish a character I want to know!

Yes, fangirls, I want posts that tell us how attractive certain characters are (nothing sexual, please). Guys, same with you... if you think Goku is sexy, go ahead and say so!

Talk about the times when you cried over a character's death, an admiration for a noble act, a unique obsession over someone that looks like you.

Bulma fans, let it all out! Give us every detail! Mike, what is it, that, truly, draws you to Vegetto? Meri, what does Trunks mean to you? Surely something very heart-felt, as evidenced by your site! ^^ There's a certain Tenshinhan fan here as well... tell us what makes him such a "charming" warrior, if you know what I mean!

Let's try and get deeply philosophical about this people! It'll help if you put on some meditation music  . I'll post mine up as soon as I clear my mind. This is a lot harder than it looks!

Have fun everyone! And once again, I offer warm greetings and good wishes to all!
...lest Toriyama come down and smite the Earth with a curse.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again: you're a really nice guy!

Well, I no longer watch Dragonball for the characters- I enjoy the fighting and knowing that my brother (who watches it with me) is experiencing the same things as I once did. But, back in the day, it was all about Vegeta. I wanted to see a little romance between him and Bulma. I like romance! But, he never really expressed his true feelings and 'opened up'... until the end, that is. :) Also, watching the Bardock special is pretty damn awesome... knowing that the character you've loved and grown up with (Goku) is the 'chosen one' who defeats Freeza and gives the Saiyan race justice. The part where Bardock disintegrates is just EPIC. (I wish Dragonball Z ended with Goku defeating Freeza but then dying with Planet Namek as it explodes, with him disintegrating Bardock-style)

People, Trunks is the most sexy-ass dude in the existence of the Universe. I love him, and I'm gonna have a body just like him! :D

I don't thinks he likes Vegetto. It's just because Vegetto + EX= VegettoEX= AWESOME.

Hey, thanks Steve! You're quite the friendly type your self! Courteous and respectful... the selfless manner in wich we should all be using this message board! We could all learn a lot from you.

Poor Bardock. Yeah, that was really a heart breaking moment, even though we all knew what was going to happen. He had such a passion, such a determination... and then... he just fries.

I cried when Goku died the 2nd time (because the first time, I didn't really know who he was. It was only the 5th time I'd ever seen him).

I mean, no one was expecting it, and then he just goes ahead and kills himself (and Kaio-sama, and Bubbles, and Gregory) to save the Earth. Then Cell ended up coming back...

Then Goku helped Gohan finally defeat Cell, with one giant Kamehameha! But sadly, was ruined in the anime for lasting for like seven freaking episodes.

I like Gokuu! :D

...I haven't done that in a long time. But it's not a romantic or sexual thing; he's just my favorite character. As a kid, he's squeezably adorable and fun, and also just frickin hilarious at times. For the most part, he's the same as an adult, but the story usually requires more of his serious side at that point.

He does make some really naive or even stupid decisions at times, which I can't say I completely condone in every case, but it keeps him from being an infallible perfect guy, even though he's very good-hearted and definitely not evil.

Despite some of those bad decisions, in the end, he pretty much always comes through, and everyone looks up to or respects him for that reason. Also, most of my favorite battles in the series have Gokuu in them, and he can be a total badass when he's angry.

--------

EDIT: Some of my favorite Gokuu moments:

Cute - Pretty much any scene of him eating or being really happy as a kid; his reunions with Kintoun in Jingle Village and again at Karin Tower

Funny - Pretty much all of his dialogue in the Pilaf arc, but especially his first meeting with Buruma and the line about not wanting to touch her "dirty ass"; his fights with Murasaki and the Pilaf Machines

Badass - His reactions to Kuririn's deaths by Tambourine and later Freeza; when he arrives at the battlefield for his rematch with Piccolo and one-shots Drum

Tear-Jerking - The reunion with his grandpa; his death at the Cell Game; the scene where he hugs Goten for the first time

I've always had a little something for Buu Saga Gohan.

It must be bacause we were 17 at the same time, and I found him cute at first, and then pretty sexy after his Power Up. And he's a very interesting character, who had the potential to be more developped : a young man, torn between two sides of his personnality, and responsible of his father's death : cool !

And even now that I'm a fully grown-up woman, he's still my favourite character. When I'm bored at work, I'm used to draw DBZ characters without even thinking of it , and most of the time, it happens to be Gohan.

I like Gohan Cell Saga and Buu Saga, he was just Mary Sue in Saiyan to Freeza saga. Cell Saga Gohan was the hero and at the last part, a total badass. In Buu, he was comic relief and again at a later part, one of the Ultimate forces of good. Ultimate Gohan anyone?

My favourite character is Tenshinhan. I didn't care for him much in DBZ at first, but he came to be my favourite once I saw his beginnings in DragonBall (since I watched Z before DragonBall).

One of Tenshinhan's first great moments for me was in his fight with Goku, when Chaozu was using his powers to paralyze Goku. When Tenshinhan found out that Chaozu was cheating for him, he demanded that he stop. Then, he even let Goku get in some free hits to make it even. It shows that he fights with honour, which I always like in a character.

I also admire the character for his numerous sacrifices throughout the series, like his efforts against Nappa, Cell, and Buu. He just goes all-out and isn't afraid to die if his actions will benefit those he wants to protect. He doesn't always go into a fight knowing that he'll win (especially against Cell and Buu). He goes in and gives it his all to help in any way that he can. Sometimes, he knows that he can't win from the start, but sacrifices himself for the greater good. It's very noble.

Goku gets my full support (long has and still does to this day) - in large because many enthusiasts of Vegeta and even Gohan, tend to hate on him a lot,, and because of his rather undeserved reputation as brainless idiot who only knows how to fight and eat (puleeeeez!). and as a stale, static character that never changes - which i think is BS and an overstatement. he is probably the loathed and misunderstood main character of ANY series..

Although naïve at times,,, he's very noble and idolizing - which i admire, even though i myself hardly live up to those traits. he may seem overly righteous and a "goodie-goodie"...but he has shown his serious and even badass moments.. he has displayed pretty much the entire spectrum of human emotions.

I like how his Saiyan nature occasionally gets the better of him - even if it leads him to making some unwise decisions,, it reminds us of his heritage. like TripleRach pointed out - he has some flaws that prevent him from being too perfect,, which is good.

He isn't your stereotypical flat superhero - he's got a lot more personality than Superman for example.. he sorta stands out from the others that way. also, i find he pretty good looking. ^^
Just Saiyan...

Tenshinhan is my definite favorite. How he relates to me? He's kinda a loner, well...not really a loner, but doesn't feel like he needs to hangout with the people he knows all the time, which makes him mysterious and cool. He's damn loyal to those he respects, at least after he realizes he can't become evil. Why I like him? He's the most underrated character in Dragon Ball in my opinion. I hate when people watch "DBZ" and think they know everything, but never bothered to watch Dragon Ball. Tenshinhan gave some of the best fights in early Dragon Ball. He's the original Vegeta also. Proud, arrogant, strong and evil, then fights Goku and realizes in time that he's a good guy.

Tenshinhan is one of the few fighters that could say he defeated Goku! Haha, I love that part. I also love the fact that Mr. Toriyama seemed to make Tenshinhan, the underdog save the day on many occasions. He saved Goku from getting killed against King Piccolo, He saved Piccolo from Imperfect Cell, and helped stall Cell from becoming perfect, and he saved Dende from Super Buu, which in turn saved everyone in the end. He's not afraid to die for a good cause, and he's always the first to fight, and always wants to fight, without fear. He wanted to fight old King Piccolo, and had to actually be stopped from it. After he found out his rice cooker was broken, he went down to fight King Piccolo head-to-head without fear. First against the Saibamen of course, and stood his ground at a charging, powered-up Nappa. I also like little things that happen...Like Goku choosing Piccolo and Tenshinhan to stay with him against the androids #19 and #20, and when Super Buu calls him a "Legendary fighter". He's just plain strong, and a good fighter. It's too bad he got left behind. All in all, I love martial arts, and I think he defines it Dragon Ball. Oh yeah, he has badass techniques that only he can do, like splitting into more of himself, or growing two more arms. That's just cool!

I am drawn to Future Truns because of his personality and backstory. His personality is probably the most level headed among the Z-Fighters, he seems most like a normal person.

I like most of the cast of Dragonball, so I'll talk about someone who doesn't really get much respect, Yajirobe. Sure, he isn't the bravest guy, or the most dependable, or diligent, for that matter, but he does follow his own path. When he first shows up, hes right up there in toughness with Goku, slicing through Cymbal like nothing...then he eats him...maybe thats why no other strong people know him before he met Goku, because he eats them when they lose?...nah...

Well, he does come through, like at the 23rd Tenkaiichi Budokai, even though hes defeated by God, and against Vegeta, even though he goes in and out so fast Vegeta doesn't get a glimpse of him. Afterwards, hes the glorified Senzu bean deliverer. But whatever, hes still cool in my book!

I'm in the generation of fans that started with Toonami, so I totally empathize with the feeling of having "missed the party", experiencing disappointment, and wanting to experience it myself. But I can't, that's how life is. Time is a bitch. The party is over. Kageyama, Kikuchi, and Maeda are off the sauce now; Yanami almost OD'd; Yamamoto got arrested; Toriyama's not going to light trash cans on fire and hang from the chandelier anymore. We can't get the band back together, and even if we could, everyone's either old, in poor health, or calmed way the fuck down. Best we're going to get, and are getting, is a party that's almost entirely devoid of the magic that made the original one so awesome that we even want more.

I'll keep mine short. I honestly gotta go with Gohan on this one, though I was sort of disappointed in the direction they took with him in the story after the Cell arc.
Elitism is a very bad personality trait. I'd rather deal with an eager to learn moron than a mean-spirited, angsty piece of shit.

I'll do mine soon, promise!

Just had to say, I assumed it was "VegettoEX" because Vegetto is the strongest character in the series, and Mike's power being MAXIMUM, it makes a lot of sense.

EX for added cool bonus.

Piccolo....

The first time I ever saw him I became completely entranced. It was the opening episodes of Z where he's in that mountainous area with just the wind blowing. He looked so ALIEN! It was his attitude that really struck me - he wasn't a snarling, mindless, crazed monster (like so many alien-looking characters are in N/A cartoons/films)... he was CALM, and very intelligent - the cape looked really mysterious too.

Gah stupid 12-year-old me. I instantly got a mad crush on him lol. The innocent kind!! (I think....)

Since the first time I saw him was in Z, I searched out the later original DragonBall episodes/manga so I found about his history and abilities. I thought it was so creative that Nameks reproduced asexually, it just added to my belief that Piccolo was way beyond all that stupid human sexuality crap.

His relationship with Gohan was another great point, because you see him change emotionally.......

When Piccolo died the first time I didn't cry, but... the way his face looked when HE cried. Oh my chibi jesus....!! I was pretty much trapped after that. I will ALWAYS love Piccolo. No other character has ever come close. I always enjoy his parts in DragonBall, even the stuff in GT.

I also have a really strong attachment to ChiChi! She reminds me of my own mom who I love soo much. Plus, she's really beautiful, and has a hard position to play as a wife and mother who doesn't want her family to be fighters. She's beautiful... wait I said that ^^.
