What is this thing?
I don't know why I never questioned this before but, what the Hell is this?

What Saga/Episode is it from, or what movie? If I remember the scene I might be able to tell you. Just off the picture alone I am guessing it might be a sleeping cot that folded up on its sides along with the rest of the stuff Gohan brought with him camping in Movie 3, but I don't recall for sure if I am thinking of the correct scene because I haven't watched that movie in a long time, not one of my favorites.

I does kinda look like camping gear, but I haven't seen movie 3 in forever, so I'm not sure...
Next quest: Buy the Super: Broly and Super Hero Blurays, also Daima whenever that releases in the states. Also the Super Manga!

It was indeed from movie 3. It's when Gohan's listing off all the stuff Chichi made him bring with him.Akira wrote:What Saga/Episode is it from, or what movie? You mean a fire ring? Though I have to say there's more there than just a fire ring but not enough to be a fire pit.Captain Awesome wrote:Thats what I thought, it was some sort of mystical Japanese campfire containment field...generator...thingy..Kendamu wrote:I think those things were on the sides of the campfire. (I'm a Newfoundlander. I've had many experiences just standing around a fire pit.)

Well I just rewatched this bit again and there are two campfires. One that Oolong is blowing on and another with Bulma and Krillin by it. Neither of them have this... thing near them. In fact, it can't even be seen in any shots other than the one in this thread when it's just on it's own, out of any context.
While it does kind of look like a mattress or something similar, they actually have a large blue tent which would presumably contain all of the sleeping stuff. The two white things on top certainly don't look like pillows (the one on the right looks more like one than the one on the left, but still...) They look a lot more like a quickly drawn version of the white rocks that cover the area.
You see it while Gohan is listing all the things Chichi packed for him so you may assume that they have something to do with the things he's mentioning at the time (a mosquito net, a waistband and some pillows) but after lingering on those strange objects for a while, the camera shows you all the things that Gohan has just taken out of his bag and the weird objects aren't anywhere to be seen (see image below).

Nah, they have to be rocks. They have jagged edges and stuff. When you see those "things" the first thing you think they are are rocks.Lookit the shape of 'em. No way in hell they could be pillows. Especially the one on the left.
Let's make it interesting. The first person to actually figure out what these are... I will give you a prize
Seriously, I will mail you somthing cool if you can tell me what these are.
That's a cool offer but how could we actually prove any one idea right?Tanooki Kuribo wrote:Nah, they have to be rocks. They have jagged edges and stuff. Well, apparently no one here knows what it is. Wich means someone would have to do some searching. If they find out what it is they can show me how they came to that conclusion with maybe links to a site or a picture of a real life... one of these things. That's a cool offer but how could we actually prove any one idea right?

I say they're hangô (Japanese mess kits).
You turn them upside down in order to avoid burning the rice at the bottom.
And the stones are there to apply more pressure and get fluffier rice, as explained here.
EDIT: Aaaand that was my 1000th post.

I think you may very well be correct. My first impression of them when I first watched this movie (last night, coincidentally) was that they were steel drums containing water, with rocks on to keep the lids from blowing away. I then realised how stupid that was and dismissed the idea but it's still what it looked like at first. Now you've actually thought of a good reason why they'd have such things (i.e. because they're rice cookers rather than barrels of water) so it makes sense.Olivier Hague wrote:I say they're hangô (Japanese mess kits).
