Other then character names, this dub's really not that bad.
You know. this dub?
I mean come on, most of this is just a straight "literal translation" from Japanese, it's not really that bad of a dub, despite how many people laugh at it and mock it. Ok, so their character names are absolutely butchered though, I will give you that. But I kind of like the voices and the acting. I'm especially fond of Gohan's voice in this dub, he actually sounds like a KID, unlike any other dub out there really. His voice is actually pretty close to the original version. And speaking of sounding like the original, I also like how they do try to mimic the original voices. Their Kaio actually sounds like the original version's kaio, doesn't he?
Well when you think about it "Saiya-People" isn't really that wrong, even if it does sound kind of silly. I'd like to hear more of this dub. "Combine our bodies."

Yeah direct translation, but...I'd rather listen to the Japanese one and read subtitles lol I like the FUNimation dub. And the Ocean dub...well...the first two Sagas I guess, after that they went sloppy and their music is pretty terrible in my opinion.
FUNimation didn't mess up any names (except if you count Bulla...but I guess that's sorta how her name would...somewhat...um...sound in the Japanese version. I mean personally I'd feel pretty weird if an adult was watching it with me and they were calling her Bra). Anyways, if you like how it sounds then...um...great. Just because it has a direct translation doesn't make it great.
Oh and by the way, apparently, there aren't many dubs that do have direct translation. Even the Spanish dub, which has kept the original music, has changed their dialog. Like on the Ultimate Uncut Edition, when you put on the Spanish dub with Japanese subtitles, it doesn't fit. They say things when the Japanese one doesn't, and you can just tell that if the subtitle says "Goku" and you don't hear the name when they speak...yeah...I think that's pretty...weird that they wouldn't include the Spanish subtitles when they have the dub track. That's pretty funny.

That's how it is with direct translation. You could do it, but the lip-sync won't match up. Remember, what works with Speed Racer and Godzilla movies doesn't always work with other things.
And yeah, names are pretty close with Funimation. With the Bra thing though, unlike some of us, they realize some of their fanbase are of the age ranger if they heard Vegeta say, "Bra come here," the reaction would be, "Tee-hee-hee. He said "bra"."

Exactly. And I believe that they changed Mr. Satan's name and they changed Hell into Home for Infinite Losers, because it's a religious thing and they don't want parents to revolt. They left it uncut on the DVDs because they gave you a choice. "If you don't like it, don't buy it." But it's hard to control when it's on TV. So that's why they did what they did. That's why I'm not too terribly upset with them changing Mr. Satan's name. They kept it in the uncut DVDs and that's all that matters. Other than that, there isn't one name that comes to mind that FUNimation changed really.
Plus, "Bra" = "Bura" = "Bulla." Perfectly legitimate romanization.Super Sonic wrote:And yeah, names are pretty close with Funimation. No, of course not.MajinVejitaXV wrote:So, does that mean if they romanized トランクス as "Tolanks" you'd be cool? ;pSSj Kaboom wrote:Plus, "Bra" = "Bura" = "Bulla." Perfectly legitimate romanization.

I'm just saying that if they really have to change "Bra" for the broadcast version, then "Bulla" is acceptable.

Well thank God they didn't. It's just saying that them making it Bulla is not as bad as if they completely changed it, because technically it's the same thing. Honestly, lets say you're an 11 year old watching DBZ and your mom's in the room and Bra's name comes up. Wouldn't that be embarrassing. And think about the parent's opinion on DBZ. Just perverted smut. I like that her name's not Bra, but Bulla sounds...weird.

It's a pun on "burumā", actually, a type of Japanese gym shorts that kind of look like large panties. The name might originate from the English word "bloomers", but they aren't really related. It's also an article of clothing extremely few dub watchers would've even heard of, so the pun is mostly non-existant on them.TheGreatness25 wrote:Bulma, bloomers is her pun, women's workout underwear or something.
Plus FUNi doesn't seem to like puns anyway. Look what they did to the poor Ginyu Tokusentai.

"Giru" sounds like a pun on "Gear", which makes sense because he's a robot. The breathing system of a fish, not so much.TheGreatness25 wrote:But if you say it fast, whats' the difference between Bra and Bura?
It's funny.
They call Bra Bulla, but they call Gill Giru. Though it's fine. That's what I'm used to already.
My mom walked in on Majin Vegeta punching Goten in the gut. :VTheGreatness25 wrote:Honestly, lets say you're an 11 year old watching DBZ and your mom's in the room and Bra's name comes up. You have a point there, at least when they make name changes they don't westernize it completely. Like calling Mr.Satan "Bob" or Bra "Jessica". Like a certain Sailor Moon dub I know. So it could be worse, it doesn't bug me that much though because I don't watch the dub. But name changes don't generally bug me to begin with.TheGreatness25 wrote:Well thank God they didn't. Aro started to laugh. “Ha, ha, ha,” he chuckled.- Actual quote from Twilight
