Cell-era Gohan's Popularity

Has anyone else noticed that even though they add content and characters from the Buu saga, whenever they're limited in how many characters they can put in a game they usually opt for a teenage Gohan?

Specifically, in Jump Ultimate Stars and Battle Stadium D.O.N. Despite Jump Ultimate Stars having Goku going SSJ3, Majin Vegeta, Gotenks, and Buu, Gohan's character is cut short at his form in the Cell games.
Again, despite Buu being a character in D.O.N, it's a Cell-era Gohan.

Is it because that's just when Gohan was most popular?
Or maybe because they didn't want a character that was too similar to Goku?

Gohan's SSj2 self during the Cell Games was just his shining moment in the series. "Mystic" Gohan was pretty badass too, but still not nearly as much.

Yeah Man! BAD ASS! Yep in the Cell saga it was his moment to shine but in the Buu saga its:
1. Gets ass kicked by fat Buu
2. Kicks super Buu's ass
3. Gets absorbed
4. Dies

I'm guessing he got absorbed and killed due to a "WAHHH WE WNAT GUKO!!!11" outcry from the Japanese fanbase in the Buu arc. I find it similar to when Vegeta was allowed to live after his first fight on Earth due to the same thing.

SSJ2 Cell Saga Gohan is pretty badass, I mean look at the way he killed all the Cell Jrs. He never did something that cool ever again.

Lies! Cell-saga Gohan is made of fail! Gohan's all time coolest moment was his re-entrance into the Buu fight and making Piccolo's, Goten's, and Trunks's jaws drop!

Think about it, you finally get to see him harness his bottled up hidden power. He completely annihilates the 7 Cell Jr.'s and gets his BA moment of a liftime. Not to mention his SSj 2 form is the most distinguishable from everyone elses.

And to top it all off, his age represents the demographic! It's no wonder he's such a popular guy.

Because Gohan was basically worthless after that point.

He was the star of the show in the Cell games, and that's how he should forever be remembered. Not as the fool who allowed Gotenks to get absorbed, then get his ass whooped, then scramble around a pile of rubble like a moron after failing to catch an earring.

Yeah, he's wayyyyyy more bad ass in the Cell Saga.
I mean, we were all shocked when we saw him go SSJ2, take Cell Jr's out like that, take on Cell.
At least I was impressed.
