Dr. Gero in Dragonball?
When Trunks was warning Goku of Androids, he mentioned about Dr. Gero, the mastermind behind Red Ribbon Army...and Goku recognised him..but the thing is , I watched Dragonball, and I saw no sign of any Dr Gero. There was one Doctor, who repaired Eighter, but he was a good guy. So how did Goku even know Gero.

The horror... the horror!
Although there was no mention of Gero in Dragonball we did have Dr. Flappe (filler) who created Android #8.
I really hope they fix this up in the season set.
(of course they didn't bother fixing the "training with Karin" in season one for a few episodes)

Goku: "Look Vegeta! People popcorn!"
Vegeta: "What is he on?"
Vegeta: "What is he on?"

Trunks said in the English manga that he was the chief scientist. He's never seen, but if you're up for speculation, maybe he was in his lab or one of those guys in the anime you see running away.
Though will say with the grudge he had against Goku, makes you wonder what he would've done had he learned of Red's intended wish.

thats exactly what confused me....Dr Gero MADE this army...he owns this all, and here we have a dwarf commanding as if he is king...really weird that Gero never seemed to have gotten any say in this matter.Super Sonic wrote:Trunks said in the English manga that he was the chief scientist. He didn't make the army. He may have been the chief scientist, but there's nothing to indicate that he personally designed or built all or even the majority of their machines (at least not that I'm aware of). And he certainly didn't make the soldiers.SuperVegito17 wrote:thats exactly what confused me....Dr Gero MADE this army...he owns this all, and here we have a dwarf commanding as if he is king...really weird that Gero never seemed to have gotten any say in this matter.

My guess would be that Gero made the the Androids (duh) and probably the radar they used too.

... I never even considered the possibility that Dr. Gero made the RRA's radar. O_O.Xyex wrote:My guess would be that Gero made the the Androids (duh) and probably the radar they used too.
Hmm. Would things like Metallic and the mech that Black used on Goku be likely to fall into the "Gero did it" range?
I don't know how much Gero would have cared about Red's goals... It's hard to tell, I guess, just what mae him care so much about the defeat of the RRA.
*wonders why Dr. Briefs knows the general location of Dr. Gero's laboratory*

Well, yeah... but Trunks suggested going back in time and destroying Gero's lab beforehand once he found out where it was... which leads me to wonder why twenty years wasn't eough time for someone to remember that someone knew a little about it...

Bulma didn't even know the exact location of his laboratory. When she figured out that #20 was really Dr. Gero, and that he was heading in the direction he was going, she was like, "oh yeah, I read in a scientific journal that Dr. Gero's laboratory was somewhere in the morntains around North City, but no one knows the exact location," or something like that.

This is the brilliance of Funi's script supervising and editing. They didnt do any research into the previous franchise. The fact that Goku says he thought Dr. Gero was dead is just being lazy, and shows that Funi put no effort into looking up his character.
I was introduced to the series through the Dub and thought the exact same thing until I watched the original series. What did I find out? Dr. Gero isnt even in Dragonball. I'm seriously wondering how many fans are still clueless to that fact because of Funi being lazy.

Yeah. I'd count Metallic as like, Android 5 or 6 or something. And Black's mech was almost certainly his doing too. I'd doubt he'd have made things like the tanks and stuff, but the mech definitely seems his area of expertise.Hmm. Would things like Metallic and the mech that Black used on Goku be likely to fall into the "Gero did it" range?
Bulma only knew the general location. They were only able to find it because they followed Gero. So it really wouldn't have been any help to know it was 'somewhere around North City'. I'd imagine that 'somewhere around North City' would cover at least a hundred square miles of mountains.Well, yeah... but Trunks suggested going back in time and destroying Gero's lab beforehand once he found out where it was... which leads me to wonder why twenty years wasn't eough time for someone to remember that someone knew a little about it...
I wouldn't put the entire blame on FUNi. I mean, if it were any other series their guess work would have been an obvious no brainer. Most characters as important as Gero (to both the Android saga and the RRA saga) don't just appear out of nowhere years after their 'first appearance'. To anyone who doesn't know Dragonball that well it just seems an obvious thing that if Gero was showing up to kill Goku in Z, for revenge for the destruction of the RRA, that he would have appeared during the RRA arc and had an important role then. This is the brilliance of Funi's script supervising and editing. They didnt do any research into the previous franchise. The fact that Goku says he thought Dr. Gero was dead is just being lazy, and shows that Funi put no effort into looking up his character.

Sure, they could have spent the fifteen or twenty minutes to fact check (well, ok, it'd have probably taken a few days what with going through the proper channels, but they still had plenty of time) and make sure the obvious was actually right (which isn't always the case in Dragonball) but I can see where they got the idea from.

Well, according to what I get from Funi Dub, Dr. Gero was the MASTERMIND behind the RRA. Mastermind , as in he probably organised the whole thing for world domination! Which is what confuses me, that why such an important figure was never even mentioned in DB.
By the way, did Trunks say anything different in the original Japanese version? If so, what is it?

Exactly, that's what you get from the FUNIMATION Dub, which is wrong.SuperVegito17 wrote:Well, according to what I get from Funi Dub, Dr. Gero was the MASTERMIND behind the RRA. Mastermind , as in he probably organised the whole thing for world domination!
You can see for yourself. The original Japanese version is on every single Funimation DVD, you only have to go to setup or audio or options (depends on which disc you have) and choose Japanese Audio with English Subtitles. Boom, you're watching the original version.SuperVegito17 wrote:By the way, did Trunks say anything different in the original Japanese version? If so, what is it?
Of course that's assuming you have this on DVD, and not VHS.
or not downloaded illegally...
