Where to buy Kanzenban?

Post by MajinVejitaXV » Sun Jul 25, 2004 10:25 am

I've got the Dragon Box sets, and am going to be using them to learn Japanese, and I figured what the hell, why not see how much the actual manga re-releases cost and where they can be found so I can work on the spoken and written at the same time.

So...yeah...how much and where? ;)

For the record, DBZ is not exactly the best thing to try and learn the language with...

Waaaaaay too much hick talk...

So I've noticed, but to be honest all my other anime titles have decent quality R1 DVD releases (whereas FUNi's have consistantly disappointed me from day one) with great translations as per the words of those more knowledgable than me, so I'm really just learning for the sake of watching and actually comprehending the Dragon Boxes and maybe the occasional imported game ;p

Thanks though,
Corey

Wait, there's a problem with the DBZ DVD translations... ?

I think a certain someone would have something to say about that :P

Heh, allow me to rephrase. I've *always* enjoyed Daimao's translations greatly, however the subpar encoding and ridiculous cost to episode ratio (along with overall shoddy presentation, something I'm sure Daimao has no effect upon) made me wait for and eventually purchase the 3 Dragon Boxes, while my fiancee called me crazy ;)

New question, I noticed that Sasuga is missing volumes 18-26 and 31-32, any ideas for those volumes?

And also, were these limited editions? Do I need to worry about snagging them immediately if I want a full set, or can I chill out and get them all over the next few months?

Thanks again,
Corey

OK, low bitrate I'll give you...

But cost per episode? Huh? Christ, you can get these discs for $18 at BestBuy. Even at three episodes a disc, that's only $6 an episode. I don't buy that argument :P

He probably gets them from Suncoast or something. I think I got the Trunks TV special for 23 bucks at On Cue.

Hm, so $1782 for all the episodes and the two specials at shitty bitrates (the only redeeming quality being Daimao's translations) and interlaced, or $1600 for both DBZ Dragon Boxes, progressive and with archival quality encoding (of restored and remastered source material).

Wow, what a dilemma ;p

Not trying to start anything, just the age old arguement I have to give ;)

Nah, I usually snagged them from a local shop which had a bunch of potheads who priced the discs incorrectly ;)

Anyway, I was figuring both at retail (the R1's at $25/3 episodes or $2425 for the whole series roughly, and the R2's at $2000 for the entire series). Either way, more money for the inferior domestic releases when you can either learn the language yourself or find Daimao's scripts (no offense, I'm not giving locations or anything, but I'd rather have the scripts and the remastered discs than buy shitty R1's made from aging materials and encoded in a halfassed manner just to see the translation, which *is* great all in honesty).

Are the Dragon Boxes really that much better? I'd like to see a side by side comparison sometime.

You can find volumes 25 and 26 at http://www.kikiwai.com

Volume 18 is up at Sasugabooks. Here's the link for it.

My mistake. I actually meant to say Volume 19, but anyway...

I found all 34 at Amazon.co.jp. Anyone have any problems in the past receiving printed material from them, or do they ship that decently?

BTW, for the one who asked for the comparision, give me shots from the FUNi discs and I'll give you the Dragon Box equivalents, as well as the bitrate information. I'll just say now that stills don't do justice, and ya gotta see them in motion.

Deus Ex Machina: Here. The page itself is in Dutch, but even so you can probably figure most of it out, particularly the quality issues.

And Amazon.co.jp is pretty much just decent Amazon shipping. I've never had any kind of problems with them in the past, and I probably never will have.

When I ordered Kanzenban number 1 from Amazon Japan, the shipping was very good. It got to England from Japan in aroun 2 weeks, which was a week earlier than they said. :D
