Interview with Ian Corlett
Interview with Ian Corlett
Along with the likes of Scott McNiel and Brian Drummond, Trevor Devall has now interviewed everyone's big fav: Ian James Corlett.
http://trevordevall.com/ (Scroll down to the newest episode)
The "big" secret is revealed, for those've you who pondered the sudden switch to Peter Kelamis and then eventually Kirby Morrow. Apprantly Ian "got tired" of doing all of Goku's screaming after a while, and eventually just went up and quit. However, this was partially because of the fact that at the time, the way the union and non-union work was set up, the actors weren't getting paid to scream...because despite that being one of the hardest parts of recording Dragonball Z, those weren't counted as lines.
It was only after the Saiyan & Namek sagas run in syndication did he realize that the show was so immensely popular and thought he made a mistake, but by then it was too little too late and he accepts that apparantly. He mentions how even NOW he still gets e-mails saying "You ARE the voice of Goku" akin to what Mike has often said in the past, and he'd gladly come to conventions apparantly. If you guys wanna see him, go to it and it can happen. Either case, thought the fans of the Ocean Group cast would appreciate this one too.

Hey, thanks for posting this.^^ Though the circumstances for Corlett leaving the show wasn't actually a "big secret" as many of us have known the reasons for years. XD Corlett stated why in his interview with Chris Psaros almost 10 years ago. ^^;

Sean is...better than the guy from the World's Strongest lol Sorry to say, but that's one experimentation that I have to say didn't work. They found someone who sounded somewhat like the Japanese version of Goku, and to me it stunk. Ian's Goku was so emotional, and he made you feel what he was thinking really. I loved how he sounded, and this might sound weird, in the Tree of Might movie. There was a line where he said, "You planted this tree in our land? Well it's gotta go!" And wow, you can just feel it. And the entire Raditz dialog was VERY well done. And he could have a light gentle voice, but when he powers up, the deepness in his voice comes out, and man, I just loved his work. I wish that they used him instead of Sean. I know that it wasn't up to any of them, but still. I wish Ian stayed as Goku. To me, he IS the voice of US Goku. Sean is second over the other guy. And the latest Ocean dub actor for Goku (Majin Buu) was plain terrible.
Yeah, this thread probably isn't the place for you :/NeptuneKai wrote:So I guess I'm odd man out when I say I think Seans Goku is by far the best eh?

LOVED the interview. Ian Corlett has been one of my favorite voice actors for years, and he's got an awesome personality to boot. I'm a big fan of Beast Wars, so that bit was really sweet as well.
Thanks for posting.
The first Ocean Dub Goku? Oh I loved that guy! The first dbz episodes I saw before really getting into the show (I really got into it during Season 3) were done with him.
When I was a newbie and had no idea what VA's were or any VA names, I remember being so sad when they switched his voice over to the 2nd guy (Though Mr. Kelamis is the best at staying the closest to his source voice; IE, he sounds the most like Ms. Nozawa's Goku. ).
I'm downloading it right now.

On hiatus.
Whoop, my mistake.Jerseymilk wrote:Hey, thanks for posting this.^^ Though the circumstances for Corlett leaving the show wasn't actually a "big secret" as many of us have known the reasons for years. XD Corlett stated why in his interview with Chris Psaros almost 10 years ago. ^^;

Kind of a shame though, that the voice of Goku everyone seems to admire also..."dreads" the role? Maybe that's not the best term, but it seems like something he's not even all that happy about in general, despite the tons of positive fan response.

I was thinking the same thing during the interview. Corlett is good and he knows this very well. The thing I've always liked about Sean Schemmel was that he is really into the character of Goku he puts a lot into the role. You can tell he loves playing it.Kirbopher wrote:Kind of a shame though, that the voice of Goku everyone seems to admire also..."dreads" the role? With TWS being one of two DBZ dvd's in my collection, I have to agree that his voice is really good. I enjoy hearing the best Kaio Ken (yes, KAI-oh-ken too) scream the english-speaking world will ever hear in their native language. Of course, I say that because we don't know what Mr. Corlett would've sounded like in that one, had he still the role.Kendamu wrote:I still prefer Peter's portrayal of Goku from The World's Strongest to any other, but I have to agree that Ian's Goku was really good, too.Castor Troy wrote:Agreed.TheGreatness25 wrote:Hands down the best Goku ever. He captured both the innocence and the power of Goku quite well.
...Yeah, I'm conflicted. How can I Sean Schemmel, which is the voice *I* grew up with? Honestly, all three are great for the role in one aspect or another. I just wish there was a super-actor who could bring us the best of all three for FUNimation's super-super-final-we-promise redub that is sure to come eventually.
For all the flack that FUNimation gets on this forum for their quote about DBZ, there's some modicum of truth to it: a 9-year-old is born every day. Or in some cases, "reborn". DBZ may be a kids' show, but it's been so close to so many hearts all over Japan, America, and quite possibly, even the world.
Nope. I don't know if it's because I've heard it the most or what but I like his best. I liked Corlett's for the longest time, even after Schemmel took over. (Especially during most of Season 3, though Schemmel didn't really sit right with me until around the Trunks saga.) I think Ian's voice fit well for the earlier Z stuff but I don't think it have worked as well Super Saiya-jin or beyond.NeptuneKai wrote:So I guess I'm odd man out when I say I think Seans Goku is by far the best eh?
And no one beats Schemmel's SSJ3 transformation scream~

Join the club. Even though he was terrible in th Ginyu saga, he was awesome in the Cell, Buu, Saiyan, and Namek sagas, and GT. I think Kirby Marrow sounded too badass for a character like Goku. I think Sean Schemmel was perfect at capturing both sides of Goku - the goofy, cheery innocent side, and the aggresive side. And nobody can touch his Super Saiyan 3 scream and the how he di the badass deep voice for him.NeptuneKai wrote:So I guess I'm odd man out when I say I think Seans Goku is by far the best eh?
Yamcha: Do you remember the spell to release him - do you know all the words?
Bulma: Of course! I'm not gonna pull a Frieza and screw it up!
Master Roshi: Bulma, I think Frieza failed because he wore too many clothes!

I always thought Peter Kelamis was the best Goku so far. He's the only person in english DB that has done justice to the original without losing or gaining any negative aspects that I've seen. And the best 16 year old dubbed Gohan was Brad Swallie. My God, that was leagues maybe even galaixes and light lightyears better than Herbert. In the end I always ranked them.
1. Kelamis
2. Corlett
3. Schemmel
4. Marrow
It's not like it mattered he voices Goku the way he wants to regardless of if it's the correct intrpretation or one he made up so I can't complain. It's be pointless.

But Sean really overdid the aggressiveness part so much so that I really think that was all Sean really knew at first. Like sometimes he sounded like a wannabe Superman rather than a carefree, aloof, guy. Not that he didn't capture that side but it was tapped into very rarely which as we know, should be counted against him. The only time I've ever heard him balance the Goku emotions was in the 23rd Budokai. Schemmel had a great voice for that part. It was so good it makes his "Z" voice(the one he always uses) sound ridiculous and out of place. I like him better than Marrow but I don't think he was the best Goku. He did an overall decent job but it could have used a lot of improvement.jjgp1112 wrote:Join the club. Be grateful the filler in Dragon Ball doesn't suck like the 3rd arc of Rurouni Kenshin.
