The mindset for the majority of fans is that Dragonball live action, CANNOT be good, and thats for Dragonball, nevermind Z.
But I ask you to check out this link:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8KTHAy9L24g
Did you find that entertaining? I sure as hell did.
I think a Dragonball *Z* movie could be good, if this much effort could be put into it, the fightscenes were badass, and the effects for a fanfilm, were pretty damn amazing.
Now, with a HUGE budget, I think a Z film, if it ever happens (because we all know by now, the new movie is pretty much just Dragonball based), could be incredible.
What do you guys think?
(On a note that only I care about, 300 posts, woohoo!)

The effects were pretty astounding for a fan made film, especially that Kamehameha that faded out of the Earth.
I agree a proper Z fight could easily be done in a live action movie, this fan film just goes to prove that.
After watching this I expect the fights in Dragonball live action to be superb. I don't just want some guy who is pretty good at kung fu.

The reason I don't think it can be good isn't because of the action or special effects. It's the music, sound-effects, and other things that change the overall atmosphere of the story that'll kill it for me.
I just have this feeling that they're making a live-action version of the dub. I don't really wanna see that.
As for this movie on YouTube: Seen it before. It was alright, but it wasn't as ambitious as the Goku vs. Freeza live-action on YouTube in terms of mid-air combat.

I'm not concerned about the special effects or stunts. They've got some of the best people in the business working on that end, and if that lovable dope Keanu Reaves can become a kickass, kung fu-wielding powerhouse like Neo, then I've got no doubt that Mr. Chatwin can be turned into Goku.
What other people are giving themselves aneurysms over (and that I'm slightly concerned about) are changes to the characters and story made in the transition of the material to live-action. I don't believe any of those we know of so far to be a big deal, but it's up to everyone on their own, I suppose.

That's kinda weird, because I can't see it. Another thing that I can't see is Edward Norton being turned into Bruce Banner for the new Hulk movie. I always imagined Edward Norton to be a good VA for Goku if a random group of celebs were to dub, but inspite of this, at least he'll be better than Eric Bana in the last Hulk movie.SSj Kaboom wrote:I've got no doubt that Mr. Chatwin can be turned into Goku.
I agree, but I also like it when movies stay true to the stories. And if that leaked on-set shot of Chatwin's stunt double is real, atleast it seems like they stayed partially true to Goku's gi.What other people are giving themselves aneurysms over (and that I'm slightly concerned about) are changes to the characters and story made in the transition of the material to live-action. Oh they're going to make a Z one; the contract they have is for a 3 movie series (ala Pirates of the Carribean, or Spiderman). Infact they start filming for the saiyajin saga movie this fall. >_>;;;;
I have to be honest, I'm not looking forward to it that much. Infact I'm kinda dreading it.
Here is my main reason why: Character.
I don't want to see Goku's character, his personality, get maimed in order to make him appear more "mainstream" and "hip" to the average, and teenage Joe.
Sure, Goku's hair defies so many laws of 2-D and 3-D that it'd make that Escher room (the one with the doors and stairs leading nowhere) proud, but the thing is it is near-impossible for it to exist in the real world.
That doesn't mean Goku's personality has to be dumped too.

On hiatus.
I'm a bit concerned about this aspect as well, but we can't assume his character will be so different just because the setting is. Despite being in school for a small fraction of the film, I'm willing to bet there won't be any major changes to the way he acts and composes himself.Chuquita wrote:That doesn't mean Goku's personality has to be dumped too.

The special effects in the movie will probably be stellar, it's how the story and characters are adapted into a live action film that will be important. It's hard to think this film will do a good job at that, especially if the story information we've been given so far is true.

But I can't, that's how life is. Time is a bitch. The party is over. Kageyama, Kikuchi, and Maeda are off the sauce now; Yanami almost OD'd; Yamamoto got arrested; Toriyama's not going to light trash cans on fire and hang from the chandelier anymore. We can't get the band back together, and even if we could, everyone's either old, in poor health, or calmed way the fuck down. Best we're going to get, and are getting, is a party that's almost entirely devoid of the magic that made the original one so awesome that we even want more.

I would just like to continue being the annoying little optimist on the issue, and point out again that Goku being "in school" doesn't necessarily mean his personality will be any different. Being in school doesn't automatically equal "brainy geek." I fully expect Goku to be his goofy, naive, and not-that-bright self.
Nor do I think any large fraction of this movie will dwell around "the high school angle." I can't make any 100% sure predictions, but I really do believe that the school thing will play an incredibly minor role in the movie.
At most, perhaps it will, actually, help make clear just how exactly much Goku doesn't belong in such a setting. In addition, it may serve as a handy way to introduce Bulma, and/or have the two of them meet. Otherwise, 95% of the plot details we've been privy to so far focus around events which drastically and decidedly have nothing to do with high school, and scream, "fantasy adventure."
So in short, I don't really think we need to sweat the school stuff. Don't get me wrong, I'm not running on blind faith here, but I really don't think it deserves or needs to be worried about as much as it is.

Kaboom, I was 100% on the same page as you before I learned the name 'Weaver'. Then all the blood drained from my brain.
It'll still be a spiffy fantasy adventure, but Weaver is pretty much the death nell on any hope for a LA Kuririn or any other non-Saiya-jin character you might care about.
Which, of course, means the Goku of sequels won't even come close to where he's supposed to be in the story, even if Mr. Chatwin nails the personality.

How so? Teto/Weaver's just an added character. And any supposition that he's "replacing Kuririn" is certainly possible, but isn't really founded on anything at all. It seems more likely to me that they're just saving him for the sequel.

Well, my fondness for DB's supporting cast aside, it's as simple as this: who's going to be killed to give rise to Super Saiya-jin Goku?
I mean, Weaver'll only be in there for two minutes for Part I, and maybe he'll get some sort of characterization in Part II, but by the time the last installment rolls around, I sort of doubt there'll be any sort of emotional payoff for seeing Goku's goofball sidekick from high school die. Granted, Kuririn is a goofball sidekick all the same, but it's not exactly the same thing. We've watched the two grow up alongside each other, and Kuririn's seen a lot of action, at least. He's shown valor and quick-thinking on the battlefield. I keep getting the feeling that Weaver'll more or less stow away on Goku's spaceship to Namek.
I don't know. I guess more than anything else, it's the notion that when the studio is coming up with its own characters -- Weaver, Carey Fuller, Agundus and Emi, respectively -- amidst a franchise that already has a LOT of characters to work with, it pretty much erases all doubt that any of the supporting characters from the mythology will actually be included. I mean, Kuririn or Tenshinhan or anybody else could have worked just as well there.

Still Kuririn, most likely. Again, there's no real indication that's Weaver's "replacing" anyone, and for all intents and purposes, we may very likely see Kuririn, Tenshinhan, and a few other folks be introduced in the sequel.Dragon Ball Daisuki wrote:Well, my fondness for DB's supporting cast aside, it's as simple as this: who's going to be killed to give rise to Super Saiya-jin Goku?
Which how much the movie's creators seem to have done their research for the part, I sincerely doubt they wouldn't realize just how important Kuririn's character is, especially his "role" in the final battle with Freeza. If they're already including characters like Yamcha and even Mai in some fashion, then I've got no doubt we'll get Kuririn eventually as well.
Besides, if they introduced ALL the cool heroes in the first movie, the sequels would be relatively bland, I think.

I really hope you're right, man.
It just seems to me that if "the best friend" is going to be established, he would be established right away. Kuririn being around for only two movies just doesn't seem... "right" to me. Like how in Spider-Man, they didn't wait until Peter Parker was in college to bring in Harry Osborn. He's the Best Friend (sort of), so it's beneficial to get him in there as quickly as possible. Why? Emotional pay-off when something bad happens.
I just don't see any real point to establishing brand new characters with recurring roles unless the objective is some kind of... (wait for it) ... emotional pay-off.
Of course, it's all speculation on my part, but I think it's at least pretty logical speculation. I hope to God I'm proven wrong. No one will cheer louder than I the minute Kuririn shows up on-screen.

Are you kidding? Have you not checked out those shots of the movie? Justin looks born to the role, and well... I love Rossum's hair!! (I must copy (it?).) I am so gonna get a fringe again.
I, for one, can't wait for the movie. It's being made by Fox and although they're being secretive and mean.. I CAN'T WAIT!
I hope they make a Z film after DB. I would love to see who acts for Vegeta (it best be someone hot!).
Think of what the graphics would be like. I hope it will be like "Fantastic Four".... seeing Goku and Freeza face off, and seeing Chichi with the infamous frying pan of doom! Ooooh, I hope that Goku and Piccolo learn to drive in the Z movie...
One quick question... is there going to be no Krillin? I can't spot him on (the) cast anywhere.

I'm going to back up Kaboom on this. I remember when people were up in arms about Transformers because of the high school angle and the rumored filming of a football sequence. Final product, we get one classroom scene as a bit of a setup, and the football scene is a humorous 5 second flashback.
I can kind of understand why Kuririn and Ten-san may be left out. If I were working on the project and had to condense this, they would make logical choices. It's hard to sell Ten without the benefit of the Tsuru-sennin Saga (without his back story, he'd just come off as a bald Yamucha with a third eye and a different creepy floating sidekick). And Kuririn? Hell he's not even really IN the Daimao Saga. He dies early on. Since they are establishing Muten as the mentor and Yamucha is getting Pilaf Saga treatment as friend and rival, if I had to off someone to piss off Goku it would probably be one of them. Then again, I'd probably try to work Kuririn in somehow because I'd want him in the next film/saga (assuming they skip the Ma Junior Saga- I doubt we'll get a tournament movie). But he isn't strictly necessary.Dragon Ball Daisuki wrote:I really hope you're right, man.

To show my appreciation, I'll only beat them half to death.
That's assuming the Freeza is even going to be filmed or that Goku will actually go Super Saiyajin.
kunziat_83's remark about this being a DB film as opposed to a Z film is the key point for me in all of this. I seriously expected that DB would be skipped and we'd be straight into the Z era stuff. i.e. The most popular part of the series (at least in America).
I'm cautiously optimistic about this film. It appears as if the producers have actually read the original story. How many film adaptions of video games for example have we had, that had almost nothing to do with the games?
Resident Evil Extinction was basically a zombie movie with a few RE references sprinkled on top. Sure, you had Wesker and Claire but their characters were nothing like they were in the games. Claire was basically a random woman who just happened to be named after the original character. The only new RE reference I can remember was the Tyrant thrown in at the end.
The story outline as it stands so far at least gives me some hope that the movie will be enjoyable and somewhat similar to the Piccolo arc.
Ultimately, I just want to be entertained for an hour and a half.
