Saiya-jin Symbol

Post by SSj_Rambo » Sat May 31, 2008 2:04 am

Over the years I have been fascinated by one particular symbol found in Dragonball Z. It is most commonly referred to as the Saiya-jin Symbol or the Symbol of Saiya-jin Royalty. The symbol has only been seen being worn by King and Prince Vegeta and above King Vegeta's throne (as far as I know), so it definitely has something to do with royalty. The symbol has been drawn by several different artists, all with minor differences and is seen commonly in the first third of the anime (I'm not sure if it is seen in the manga, so if anyone does know if it is or is not in the manga I would love to know). I have collected a few screenshots from across the web and from a few AMV's, so here they are.

Here it is as it is seen in the Freeza saga being worn by Kid Vegeta and King Vegeta and above King Vegeta's throne during mental flashbacks by Freeza and Vegeta:

Here it is as it was seen in the one shot DBZ manga High Pride!! The Saiyan Prince Vegeta (illustrated by Minoru Maeda):

Here it is as it was seen in the video game Sparking! Meteor:

Here it is as it was seen in Dragonball Z Movie 8: Broly The Legendary Super Saiyan:

Here is a nice shirt I found over at the Z Store, it has a nice image of the Saiya-jin symbol and it lables it as associated with Saiya-jin royalty so that's neat. There seems to be some minor differences between how the symbol was drawn for the shirt and how it was drawn for the anime, but nothing major.

Here is another thing that has fascinated me, it seems to be some sort of royal jewelry that was only worn by King Vegeta. I have read about it only once on the internet and it was referred to as the Torque of Kingship. If anybody has any information on this as well, I would be grateful to hear it.

If anyone has any views or thoughts about this symbol I would love to hear them. Also, if anyone has any cannon information on the symbol and the "Torque of Kingship" I would love to know it.

I know for a fact that the symbol was never shown in Toriyama's manga. Neither King Vegeta nor child Vegeta appear at all in the manga; they only appear in anime filler and movies/specials (hell, the king isn't even named in he manga).

Thanks, that tells us that there is a chance that Toryama never even drew the symbol, it's still cool though.

Whether Toriyama drew or didn't draw the sysbol is a bit of a mystery, remember, he contributed a great deal to filler, movies, and GT.

Looks quite devilish... Satanic? Like a Trident and Horns. And it's red too...

What could it mean? Has anyone dissected why he chose that design specifically?

That's what I thought at first too, but I've never heard of the Saiya-jins using boats. ^_^

Why was that episode about the Pokemon acadamy test...thingy in season 1 the first thing that popped into my mind?
"It's an upside down Jigglypuff!"

Maybe it has no real meaning and just looked cool and distinct at the time.

It could be a sign that Frieza made for the Saiya-jins. Hell, it could be the royal family crest or something for Vegeta's family (same could be said for that jewel necklace around King Vegeta's neck). Whatever the meaning is for either of them, it's cool that somebody finally brought them to attention.

In Japan (where the symbol was first made) Suppa Saiyan is pronounced Super Saiya-jin and abreviated as SSj, it might still be related though.

"Suppa Saiyan"?

Anyway, Saiyajin is actually one word. "SSJ" is more an invention by English speaking fans, I think.

That's how it's abbreviated in America, is what I'm saying.

I always thought it kind of looked like a turtle as well as an anchor. The back part or bottom curve with points would be the legs , back portion of the shell and tail. The two lines in the center could be the deviations in the shell or the under side of the turtle, and the pointed arrows or top of the anchor could be the outstretched arms of the turtle and head. If it were a turtle that'd be fitting considering Goku's background. But yeah it looks most like an anchor.

How I enjoy the anime:
