Dissapointed at FYE

Post by the original ero-sennin » Fri Jun 06, 2008 7:13 pm

So, today i stopped by my local FYE. I was walking through their used Anime DVD section, and I couldn't believe what I saw. Bootlegs! And lots of them. Included in this outrageous selection of bootlegged DVDs were several Dragonball bootlegs. Needless to say, I was concerned. I took it upon myself to inform an FYE employee that these sets are bootlegged and that I couldn't believe that they would be selling those sorts of things. He replied by saying: "Well, they can't be bootlegged, otherwise we couldn't be able to sell them." Hmm. Well clearly I was not going to change his mind. A bit upset, I left the store.

Now, I have seen bootlegs for sale before. But I never expected such a large chain as FYE would be selling them. Anyway, I'm glad to be done with this little rant. I feel loads better. Having said all this. Have you guys ever had a simliar experience? Ever seen something like this before?

Well, Toywiz used to sell fansubs, but they're more associated with people like us and not the general public, so it's not suprising from them. But shit, I wouldn't expect a place like FYE to even associate itself with bootlegs let alone sell them.

Call the head office, and explain what you saw. You should take pictures and report this so they won't do this shit again. The Anime industry is in too bad shape right now for Bootleggers to be stealing profits.
The series doesn't start with the arrival of Raditz. Stop being lazy and watch Dragonball.

Actually, I'm sure that FYE would be the ones making money off of the bootlegs as from what I gather are pre-owned copies. The bootleggers already got their cut.

But yeah, I would do what Raki said and contact corporate-- or at least speak with the store's manager about this.

That's what I thinlk happened. Since the staff most likely isn't knowledgable of the DBZ release history, they'll just take any DBZ DVD that a customer shows them and put it in the D section.

I ended up getting a bootleg DBZ DVD from SunCoast. I honestly didn't know at the time that it was a bootleg, as I had not seen the Japanese DVD covers at the time. However, upon playing it, I found that it had unremovable Chinese subtitles. I could have taken it back to the store, but this DVD was already obtained in exchange for a GT DVD that was the incorrect disc.

Aah. yet another reason I don't buy from The Wall. The main one being that their prices are absolutely insane for everything. Don't even bother to walk in their stores anymore.

That's really weird that they are selling bootlegs. I sold a few extras of some DBZ dvds I accumulated and they had to scan the barcode to tell me how much they could give me for them. So I wonder how that works...

FYE is a HUGE rip off, not once have I seen a DVD that isnt sold for retail price. I mean at least Suncoast is reasonable with their prices.

Just do nothing about the situation, and let it go. There are more important things going on in the world. Though now that I know they buy bootlegs, it sounds like a good idea to get rid of the ones I bought a few years ago, without knowing what they were.

You're lucky you still have a Suncoast; I haven't had one in 3 years since FYE bought them out.

They turned it into a rug store, then that failed and they turned it into a clothing store. :(

Please, for the sake of Dragonball, report this to the FYE customer service or head manager. The more money Funimation makes off of Dragonball, the more Dragonball they make, and they're not making any mone from bootlegs. Even though the recent releases by Funimation have all been cropped it's better than nothing.

There's ALWAYS bootlegs in FYE. I've already tried to talk with the manager of my local FYE store about it, and all he did was give me a pack of Skittles and a free bootleg DBZ DVD. He didn't do anything about it, nor did he care. So I just gave up.

Whoa... I go to my local FYE quite often and have never seen a bootleg. This really surprises me. Hmm...

Sounds like we need to get some Sacred Water and cure the people at FYE of the Black Water Mist!

If they were used DVDs I can understand bootlegs, therefore the actual rights don't lie with anyone. However, if they were "hot off the press" DVDs, then that's another issue all together.

I also agree with Sun_Wukong, FYE is a rip-off. I'd rather drive the 20 miles to Best Buy instead of the 5 miles to FYE to get my DBZ dvds, at least their prices are reasonable.

I go with Best Buy or Amazon, I have 3 Best Buys in driving distance from me.

This is seriously why we should just walk away from the situation. It's not like Funimation, Toei, and Akira Toriyama, don't make enough money on Dragonball merchandise as it already is.

The Anime industry in North America needs all the cash it can get. I wouldn't stand for bootlegs being sold in professional retail chains that are supposed to know better.

I'm yet to see any bootlegs in Australian stores, but I always get pissed off when I surf Ebay for Dragonball stuff.

Some sellers have the audacity to say things like "Don't spend a fortune with Madman (the Australian dvd distributor) buy them here!" and have the entirety of Z on something like eight discs
