Had the FUNimation/Saban team continued...

Post by JulieYBM » Fri Jul 11, 2008 2:05 pm

...twelve episodes would have been left in the typical "65 episodes for a animated program" (or was that thrown out of the window years ago at this point?) assuming the team up continued it's safe to say that the remaining episodes of the Freeza saga would have been spliced into twelve episodes (as fifty-three had already aired/produced). What I would like to know if how you guys think the splicing up would have gone? I could foresee the Freeza fight being largely cut to heck and back (like the cutting of Kuririn's 'death' and Son's 'death' after being knocked into the lava). What do you guy's think?

I don't even wanna think about that...
How did the Ocean Cast do it? Didn't they essentially copy the FUNi dub?

Funimation hired the Ocean cast as voice actors for the dub that Funimation themselves wrote with the restrictions from Saban.

Nope. The scripts are nearly the same, but when it comes to the voices, both dubs can be pretty different.

The cuts in the Ocean - or better: International English dub - are of course the same as in the TV version from FUNi (which isn't so much censored as the old Ocean dub, back in the days with Saban), because, the video material is exactly the same.

They would probably cut out: 1) A large amount of the Freeza fight. 2) Most (if not all) of the scenes on Earth with Bulma, Gohan, Vegeta, Piccolo and all of the Namekiens. 3) They would also probably cut out the episode or two after Namek's explosion where all of the Namekians are at Capsule Corp.

I would have given up on Dragonball all together if the Funi/Saban thing would have continued.
The series doesn't start with the arrival of Raditz. Stop being lazy and watch Dragonball.

I'm in the generation of fans that started with Toonami, so I totally empathize with the feeling of having "missed the party", experiencing disappointment, and wanting to experience it myself. But I can't, that's how life is. Time is a bitch. The party is over. Kageyama, Kikuchi, and Maeda are off the sauce now; Yanami almost OD'd; Yamamoto got arrested; Toriyama's not going to light trash cans on fire and hang from the chandelier anymore. We can't get the band back together, and even if we could, everyone's either old, in poor health, or calmed way the fuck down. Best we're going to get, and are getting, is a party that's almost entirely devoid of the magic that made the original one so awesome that we even want more.

You're wrong there, there were a few more cuts. Some for time, some for violence - at least, that's what my sources say...
For all the flack that FUNimation gets on this forum for their quote about DBZ, there's some modicum of truth to it: a 9-year-old is born every day. Or in some cases, "reborn". DBZ may be a kids' show, but it's been so close to so many hearts all over Japan, America, and quite possibly, even the world.
As others have said, I don't even think about that. Yuck.
Yamcha: Do you remember the spell to release him - do you know all the words?
Bulma: Of course! I'm not gonna pull a Frieza and screw it up!
Master Roshi: Bulma, I think Frieza failed because he wore too many clothes!

Had the FUNi stayed with Saban instead of splitting off like they did, Pioneer would also have continued producing the DVDs, and continued making quality accurate dub DVDs like the first 3 movie releases.

Still bugs me to this day that the above didn't continue, if only Pioneer had the license.......

I don't think that the rest of the Freeza Saga would've made sense in just 12 episodes.

If they managed to cut the Freeza fight to twelve episodes, they'd be hailed as the Saviors of Dragonball Z.

Goku: *speaks in any of his Ocean voices* YOU SENT KRILLIN TO THE NEXT DIMENSION!!!! *goes SSJ*

Frieza: Huh!?NO YOUR FATHER'S BRILLIANT INVENTION, THE SUPER SAIYAN!!!

Goku: YES MY FATHER INVENTED THE SUPER SAIYAN, IT'S A FANTASTIC INVENTION ISN'T IT!!NOW YOU CAN SEE THE NEXT DIMENSION YOURSELF!

I'm so glad FUNimation cut their ties with Saban.

Imangine if they coninued it in the Trunks saga.

Trunks: They sent my friends to the next dimension, those androids.

Goku: I wish I was there to stop it, wha happened to me why was I there to meet them?

Trunks: Frieza placed a nano virus that will send you to the next dimension six months before your friends, it was made by your genius father. (instead of the heart Virus)

I would have loved to see the original ocean cast stay on, albeit with the slightly better FUNimation scripts.

Then I would probably buy the season sets just to hear the dub with the original music.

My friends just contributed:

Kaioshin: Buu is the result of the last Radical Weaponry of Rygal 7, that is why your father, a brilliant scientist, invented the fusion technique.

Imagine the Bardock special.

Maybe so, but making it all make sense is the hard part.

I really hate how they edited the first two seasons. I was introduced to the show back when it was still airing on Fox. I remember when I was a kid I had some of the episodes on tape and I remember I kept rewinding the part about the parachutes over and over again trying to see what the hell they were talking about. I even got my parents, cousins, friends, and even my teacher to look at it. Long story short my friend (who got me into the show) told me about the Japanese version and how America cut up the English version. Silly me !
I completely respect your opinion, and I respect you. I enjoyed discussing this with you, even if I don't completely agree.

If we're all here for a reason then I'm just visiting.

I'm definitely gonna make a dub of that scene with those lines, just to see how it turns out.

For Freeza, I'm gonna use the voice I made for him, everyone else, I'm gonna try to imitate the Ocean Cast.
