Heros eat a lot

Post by Zuhalter2000 » Sun Jul 20, 2008 8:13 pm

I'm not much of a manga/anime person except for Dragon Ball but I have been watching some One Piece when I noticed this (but my question is partly DB related). I noticed Luffy eats a lot like Goku. Is there some Japanese cultural reference with the heros eating a lot or is that a similarity that these two series seem to share?

Same with Naruto. I think they all got it from Goku.

Pretty sure it's a shonen trait in general. Don't know if Goku trademarked it, though.

Both of those mangas were influenced by Dragonball. Put the pieces together.

Perhaps, but The Slayers's Lina Inverse and Gourry Gabriev ALSO eat a ton, and that begun as a series of novels, that got turned int an anime show later. So there might be more to it then just borrowing from Toriyama.

If you wanna analyze it more than anyone really should and look at it from a physiological perspective, you could say that due to all the power and energy they burn, they've got ridiculously high metabolism, and thus, need a great deal more food than your average joe.

The over-eating hero (or heroine) tends to represent a personality that is brash, outspoken, and perhaps lacking in manners and accepted social skills. In Japan, it's typical to politely refuse what is offered to you at first, then eventually accept after repeated offers, showing a socially acceptable amount of restraint. Your typical shounen hero, on the other hand, doesn't know the meaning of the word restraint (how would he have all his crazy adventures if he did?) He will take food without asking, come back for seconds, and not stop until it's all gone. It's kind of a shortcut to giving you a good idea of the character's personality, showing they don't care about following all the rules.

Like the facination with eye drops and the constant threat of "chlorine irritation" which plagues the Dragonball world, it is a strange thing. Combined with the heavy smoking and cigarette use on the show it makes extra sense. Extreme hunger in addition to the above symptoms? Maybe they are just hungry a lot...or somthing else.

Well Goku is a Saiyan and Saiyan's do eat a lot....

As I tease my younger sibling (Oh so much) The guy who invented Naruto actually got his inspiration from Akira Toriyama and Dragonball! So makes sense that Naruto would eat a lot :P

Oh yeah. Eiichiro Oda, One Piece's creator, practically WORSHIPS Toriyama. They did an interview together at one point, and Oda could do little more than stammer and drool like a crazy fanboy the entire time. Don't blame him, though.

I was just searching through the web for other places where this same question was asked, and the first page I found made me twitch.
Question:
-Why is it that an anime series' main character always seems to eat so mutch but never gain weight?
First Answer:
-Because after they eat they usually fight or up their power level to OVER NINE THOUSAAAANNNNDDDDD!!!

Wow people, at least that crap stays away from here!

I also found this site: http://www.geocities.com/hodgepodgestuff/eats.html . It's really just a bunch of bad pictures of people eating in different manga or anime/cartoons, but it was fun for me to try and see which charcters I knew..which sadly was only Goku and co. and Homer Simpson. :|

If you notice, Son Goku from Saiyuki eats a lot so I think they probably all got it from Journey to the West?

From what I have read of Journey To The West, there is no real mention of characters with bottomless stomachs. Sailorspazz I think may be the closest with his/her relation of the idea to the Japanese eating cuustom of declining more food. Characters like Goku and Luffy are really good guys but are lacking in the manner department.

On the subject of food, has anybody else ever noticed on Dragonball the scene with a young Piccolo eating a fish he had caught?

Do you think this is because he has not met any other Namekians and so does not know he has no need to eat, or do you think this was because in Dragonball; Akira had not planned to make Goku a Saiyan, Piccolo a Namek etc.

It is one of those lingering bits that really gets my brain ticking

And I dont think Akira had though as far ahead as Namek anyway.

Even though that bit was filler...there's a part in the manga (when Kami explains to Bulma how he ended up on Earth) where he mentions in the place he stayed "there was no food".. This suggests that neither he or Piccolo realized that they didn't have to eat, and did.

Conclusion - Namekians can eat,, but they don't need to.

Maybe it makes them feel good...like cigs (or fags depending on your country) for humans. Hell maybe it can even turn into a bad habit.
