Super Saiyans can heal the wounded and/or resurrect the dead

Discussion, generally of an in-universe nature, regarding any aspect of the franchise (including movies, spin-offs, etc.) such as: techniques, character relationships, internal back-history, its universe, and more.

Super Saiyans can heal the wounded and/or resurrect the dead

Post by Saiyajin no Tatsujin » Sat Aug 16, 2008 6:42 pm

First off, I apologize if this topic has already been brought up. This is my first topic, and I did a search before starting it.

According to DBZ movie #5 (which I just finished watching), they either have the power to heal the wounded or resurrect the recently deceased. When Goku turns SSJ in the movie, he grabs the (injured or dead?) bird lying next to him, and he brings it back to 100%, using nothing but his chi. The bird then flies away.

Was the bird dead, duying, or was it just so injured that it couldn't move? That is the real question here.

But either way, this would categorize as being, yet, another hidden power that wasn't fully explored in the series.

I wouldn't say it's a "hidden power", more like Toei pull more crazy shit out of their asses. The closest thing I can think of to this is when Goku gave Freeza his ki after he got cut in half.

Well this has only happened once, but Son gave energy to the wounded Freeza and that got him moving, so maybe the bird wasn't dead.

I don't think the birdie was dead either. It was just exhausted/injured. The point of Goku's healing it, as I see it, was a demonstration of Goku's "revival" more than anything else.

Like, "Hey Cooler, I was all beat up and crappy a minute ago, but hey! Now I'm all Super Saiyan-y and I've got sooooo much more power than you, that I can afford to give some to this li'l birdie and STILL effortlessly kick your ass!"

Toei is so awesome. We should make them an altar or something.
The series doesn't start with the arrival of Raditz. Stop being lazy and watch Dragonball.

I always saw it as a visual metaphor- like the bird flying during the Spirit VS Spirit scene with Gohan. It looked cool, and it had symbolism.

I don't know. That scene in DBZ movie #5 had me thinking. Even though I've seen the movie 12 or 13 times, I just thought about it this last time. Then I started thinking about Dende's healing gift, and yeah. I thought it might make for an interesting discussion. You guys make sense, though. It could be a number of things, but who knows with Toei. There's a ton of unexplained shit in the series that makes us go... :? , "WTF?".

I'll give you another example (and I'm sure this has been discussed here before).

Android 17. Umm...what the hell happened to him after Cell spat him out? He just dissapeared! He didn't even turn back into a human when Kuririn made that wish. Did he? According to the wonderful GT series (sarcasm), he stayed as an android. They could've at least showed him fly away or something. And I'm suprised Android 18 didn't go looking for him. Weren't they siblings?

Sorry to go off topic like that. But you guys see what I'm talking about? Our beloved anime has so many loop holes. As a matter of fact, it probably has the most loop holes of all the animes ever created. But I still love it!

Kuririn couldn't wish for them to become human again. Shenlong tells him in volume 35 (my favorite volume!) that the artificial humans are beyond his power. So Kuririn changes his wish. He askes Shenlong to remove the bombs from 17 and 18 instead. As for 17 after cell spit him out he is on page 179 of volume 42 giving energy to Goku's genki dama.

#17 was never spat out either, he stayed inside Cell until Cell blew himself up, then was ressurrected by the wish to bring back Cell's victims.

In the very last volume of the manga, Android 17 makes an appearance, and donates ki to Goku's Genki-Dama.

Judging by that individual panel, one could assume that since the whole Cell debacle, he's merely been living out a normal lifestyle with the acceptance that he can't do whatever he pleases, with destruction in his wake without consequence (getting his bum handed to him by the Z-senshi).

The series also tries to imply that the present day Androids' attitudes were different to those from Trunks' timeline from what I remember, so that could contribute to 17's assumed smooth transition into living out a normal life.

He and 18's only "mission" was to kill Goku. I guess once it became obvious that they were no longer capable of doing that, they pretty much just went, "eh, who cares" and lived normal lives.

The way I interpreted it was that aside from causing general trouble, they never wanted to be androids and hated Gero for making them that way, and always wanted to live normal lives. So after he got wished back, the bomb got removed, and Cell was dead, he just went off into the woods to do live like he always wanted.

It looked shiny.

Like when during a funeral scene, it rains. That kind of thing.

I saw it as a contrast of good and evil.

I always saw a major and consistent theme with Freeza and his ilk, was that they were selfish and had absolutely no regard for life.

Goku on the other hand defended and loved the Earth and life in general, and even with him being a great and powerful Super Saiyan, he still put forth effort to defend innocent and 'small' creatures, ie the bird.

It represented 16's "soul" leaving.

It's probably just trying to show Goku in the best light possible. Almost trying to make him look like a saint and not a Saiyan :P

Imagine if the poor bird was dying before the almighty prince Vegeta, somehow I can't see him sparing some ki to revive it. - Maybe fry it.

He didn't have a soul, though. There was nothing to leave.

That's why they used quotations around soul.
