That Canadian content thing reminds me, some politicians wanted to ban anime and a few US shows for not being made in Great Britain.
GB, land of the not so particularly free!

I agree with Forgotten Hero. Even in the short episodes, you guys are still able to enlighten me on one thing or another. That whole Canadian Content thing is pretty trippy. I'm guessing the US doesn't have that kind of thing where a specific percentage of their shows have to be from the US? Though it would explain why companies even bother with dubbing anime in the first place (well, aside from the whole "we're too lazy to read subs" excuse).

On yes! I forgot to point that out with the Canadian thing!
Enlighten is usually what they do to me. My friends think I'm a DBZ expert, but I'm defiantly not!
The podcast, and now the forum is really like a teacher. I always learn something new with every podcast.

I never thought, nor heard of the rumor that Cancon quotas were the reason for the dub switch ups.
The main rumors were that YTV (The Canadian broadcaster) was getting annoyed at the fact that FUNimation would send their broadcast tapes months after the last set (or Cartoon Network's airing), forcing the channel go to reruns with DragonBall Z for extended periods of time. This seems likely.
Then there is the less likely dispute between FUNimation and YTV considering the shows' content. Rumors say YTV wanted the show to be less violent. This doesn't make much sense, but the dispute between the two could be true. Since it would be four years for another FUNimation show to air in Canada on any broadcaster.

Well, considering how dirt poor FUNimation was at the time it's not too much of a surprise.

So poor, they(apparently) sold the rights to the first 13 episodes of Dragonball. Damn....

They didn't sell the rights to those episodes, only the home video rights via a license agreement. Much like what FUNimation had with Pioneer with the original Ocean dub releases.

True, but we'll never get those episodes re-dubed or with a Japanese track with Mr.Simmons' subtitles.
It is "like" they sold the episodes away.

While it is true about the CRTC's ruling about Canadian content to be aired in Canada, it's not so much in the case of Dragon Ball Z. As mentioned earlier by another forum member, it was pretty much due to YTV being annoyed with Funimation's slow delivery of episodes. They had a feud over it for a long time. Fortunately, that feud ended when YTV finally started airing Funimation's English dub of Fullmetal Alchemist.
The world is your's.

I hear Gen himself did it.
The series doesn't start with the arrival of Raditz. Stop being lazy and watch Dragonball.

Regarding the whole CVS selling DBZ DVD's, I work at my local CVS store in Frederick, Maryland and I have not spotted any Dragonball DVD's. I remember going through all the discount DVD's we had about a month ago and there was no DBZ. I looked again today after hearing this episode in excitment. I was thinking, "wow, could we really be selling DBZ videos without me knowing?!" But yet again we had no DBZ. We just have a bunch of original Speed Racer DVD's, 1 Yu-Gi-Oh DVD, 1 Batman Beyond DVD, 1 Pokemon: The First Movie DVD, and a bunch of old live action movies. But you know, I don't work there every second that it's open, so there is the possibility of us only having a very few amount of DBZ DVD's and them being sold when I wasn't there.
So I geuss not all CVS' have the same DVD's in their dicount rack. I would say that if you have 2 or more CVS' near by, go check them both out because one might have them and the other one not.

I am thinking about listening to these podcasts again, but I have no idea which one I left off on. I guess I'll just do a ini-mini-miney-mo thing to see which ones might be good. Either that or look at the subject matter! I might listen to this one...

Steve did the translations/subs for:
Original DragonBall's Tournament Saga: Episodes 14-28.
Original DragonBall Movie 2 - Sleeping Princess in Devil's Castle.
Original DragonBall Movie 3 - Mystical Adventure.
DBZ movies 1-13.
The Bardock and Trunks specials.
ALL of DBZ.
ALL of GT.
The Goku Jr. special.
(Also the video-games, Budokai, Budokai 2, Budokai 3, and Budokai Tenkaichi/Sparking!)
Clyde handled:
Rest of Original DragonBall: Episodes 29-153.
Original DragonBall, 10th Anniversary, Movie 4 - Path to Power.
I'm not sure who, if either of them, translated original DB eps 1-13 for the PAL R4 release.
