Season Six Discussion Thread

Post by MagicBox » Wed Sep 03, 2008 9:19 pm

I figured I'd go ahead and pass this along so that nobody feels left out. Over on FUNimation's forums, our good buddy Gozar has recieved the set and posting screencaps. He also gives us some insight into some redubbed/added lines. Also, for anybody who didn't already know, "Spirit vs. Spirit" didn't make it into the dub.

Here's the thread: http://community.funimation.com/tm.aspx?m=77329&mpage=1&

Scroll down to get to Gozar's posts. To copy/paste my thoughts from the thread...

Aside from the cropping, these really look great. Probably the best set yet. It's sad that the insert song was removed, but what's even sadder is that FUNi didn't get one of their composers to create an instrumental version like they did with the first two movies. Sure, with Gohan's stupid dub monologue in that scene, a vocal song probably wouldn't have been heard very well, but an instrumental version would've been great. At least now that all three episodes with vocal songs have passed, there shouldn't be any more issues with the English-with-Japanese music track. Well, never mind. "We Gotta Power" will probably be replaced in the remaining sets. "We Were Angels" will probably be kept, though, considering FUNi's established rule of replacing the opening songs, but not the ending songs.

I found only THREE out of those shots that looked bad, and that could just be the animation in general! not bad, so far. Stolen from Gozar's funi posts.
For all the flack that FUNimation gets on this forum for their quote about DBZ, there's some modicum of truth to it: a 9-year-old is born every day. Or in some cases, "reborn". DBZ may be a kids' show, but it's been so close to so many hearts all over Japan, America, and quite possibly, even the world.
*sigh* That's too bad about Spirit vs Spirit. How much is this one gonna cost again ? 40 dollars ?
I completely respect your opinion, and I respect you. I enjoyed discussing this with you, even if I don't completely agree.

If we're all here for a reason then I'm just visiting.

Screens in that thread look as good (or worse) as the previous box set. I'm personally interested the final battle... to see if the Kamehame-Ha battle. The episode is extremely complex, and requires very good encoding... the old singles are riddled with macro-blocking.

I'm talking about these scenes:

If anyone here has it, I've love a comment/screen caps about it.

Holycrap, these look awesome. I was worried about a season like season 2, bacause in the trailer things look pale. Well If they can keep the quality as good as in season 3-6, I'm happy.

There went everyone's biggest dream for the dub since 2000 (mine included).

Funimation = Doomed to never get things right with dbz since 1996.

Why doesn't someone just edit the English clip of the SSJ2 transformation, since it will have no background music, to have the song over it, It would probably be very simple. POST THAT SHIT ON YOUTUBE!

Don't forget to remove all of Gohan's dialogue.

This makes me wonder why funimation bothers employing people when the fans can do such a better job. :P

Knew this was bound to happen. And considering FUNi stopped redubbing lines halfway through Season 3's boxset, it's best assumed that the scene isn't quiet at all right before Gohan snaps.

Oi...

Sucks that Spirit vs Spirit was removed, but what do you expect?
The series doesn't start with the arrival of Raditz. Stop being lazy and watch Dragonball.

Just for comparisons sake:

The shots for these sets definitely look better than that of season five, the colours are actually pretty nice.

I had to tinker with my tv extensively to fix the contrast and colour for the FUNimation singles, to the point where I have two colour profiles, one for the PAL releases, one for the NTSC :(

You know what? I don't even care. This kind of thing doesn't bother me in the least.

Why?

Because I'm never going to watch the dub again. And anybody who wants to hear Spirit vs Spirit, is probably in the same boat.

Hell, FUNimation could turn around, start over, and make the most top notch dub they've ever done for Dragon Ball. Quite frankly, it's too late.

All of those shots need to be de-interlaced for comparison's sake.

This set does look pretty good, and I'm not really disappointed about Spirit v. Spirit. Disappointment would stem from an expectation that was not met, and I assure you that I did not expect anything good from that scene at this point.

Unlike the posts above me, it's not too late just yet. I think it's just for the sake of investment, but I own every DB, DBZ, and DBGT DVD Funi has ever released, barring those movies where there was an option between edited and uncut. At this point, I don't see myself just ceasing to support their DVD line. To that end, a Dragonbox release with dubbing on par with Full Metal Alchemist would be sort of a reward to fans like myself and many others here who have stuck with them from the beginning. It won't happen, but I can always continue to hope.

Does anyone with the set know if the Japanese title cards are still retained on a second angle or are the english title cards the only ones that one can view?

No, I don't know about seaon 6, since I don't have it yet, but season 1-5 can have all the Japanese title cards, if you change them in the menu.

What's spirit vs spirit? I assume a vocal piece that is played as Gohan fights? Was it in the other english release? Is it on the japanese audio track?
