Season set complaints=Sour Grapes?
Hope this doesn't open up a can of worms, but any of you guys ever think that the guys who complain about the season sets post-season 2 are just mad at themselves for not getting those eps earlier? What I mean is sometimes when I hear complaints I wonder, "Why didn't you buy them on their old releases?" Understand guys who were in high school in the time and/or had small allowances probably couldn't have done much about it, but guys who were 20+ circa 2003-2006 I think y'all should've gotten them back then. Know I'm partially guilty of this myself, but had bouts of unemployment and didn't get around to it at the time, so that's on me.
We can't buy the old releases because that still leaves us with a gap of episodes that weren't released uncut before the boxsets started coming out. Sure we can buy the episodes that were released, but we can't own the entire series. The complainers think/know that if these sets had sold like shit then FUNimation would have reconsidered their actions and probably put out sets that had the correct aspect ratio.
This thread seems like a very bad idea BTW.

I got hold of the singles before season 3 hit Australia, which was still late, but I made the conscious decision to opt for the single releases, mainly because I found the quality of the sets to be an absolute joke, sure the image quality has improved of late, but the cropping and "remastering" problems (to me) still justify my decision.
Apart from seasons one and two (I do own the Ultimate uncuts) I own the entire series in 4:3, and honestly the only way I could be happier is with a Dragonbox, I still don't agree with FUNimation's decisions, and that's why they don't get my cash.

I just simply refuse to buy the season sets as they are. I don't buy movies in fullscreen, and I won't buy my TV series in widescreen.
Even the "remastering" doesn't bother me as much as cropping out 20% of the vertical resolution. It isn't right, I don't like it, and I'll consciously refuse to purchase it. It's not even a consumer statement, I understand I'm just a drop not in the bucket, but in the ocean here. But I wouldn't be able to enjoy the series in this format, really. So I don't buy it. I don't make consumer statements usually, I just get the service or product that is best for my dollar. And even with no competition, these sets just aren't worth my money to me.

I'm not in a good financial position, so these sets, even with their flaws, are a needed thing. Hell, I got the whole Buu saga, but only on edited VHS because my mom was buying them, and didn't see the point in paying $20 for 3 episodes, and I agreed it was a bit much. But, the prices on these sets, especially at Best Buy, have finally allowed me to get the series in unedited dvd format.
I do hope there will be Dragonboxes later...and we know there will be. <_< (Funimation won't pass up the chance to sell us those if they can, and then Blu Ray versions of them). But, for now, this is my shot to see the episodes in both English and Japanese, uncensored. Yeah, I'm waiting for the good versions (Funimation: The Dragonboxes, in Fullscreen-THE WAY IT WAS MEANT TO BE SEEN!), but this is a good shot for me in the mean time.

Damage to the masters they had on hand, apparently. They cut away the top and bottom so that the damage wouldn't be visible, then expanded it to the side as much as they could so that it wouldn't "feel" as zoomed in as it was. I'm inclined to believe this explanation, since they're remastering DBGT in its original aspect ratio.

Which makes me think why they didn't try to find another source for new masters, I can understand not getting Dragonbox masters but somebody out there must of had a better master of the show.johnboy1 wrote:Damage to the masters they had on hand, apparently. I actually have to say that the Season Sets are the best releases yet. Sure it may be cropped but it gives it more of a cinematic feel when it's 16:9, makes it feel more epic. Sure lots may disagree with me but this is just my opinion.
Another reason it's 16:9 is because TV standards is suppose to be 16:9 these days and it would be pointless releasing it in 4:3 as there's already a perfect 4:3 release on DVD.

Yeah, there is a big gap in the 4:3 release that does not include episodes that are released in the orange bricks.MagicBox wrote:Um, no there's not.DragoonClawNZ wrote:Another reason it's 16:9 is because TV standards is suppose to be 16:9 these days and it would be pointless releasing it in 4:3 as there's already a perfect 4:3 release on DVD.
Um no. Do you realize that people in the 1980/90's thought that they needed their movies to be fullscreen, cropped fullscreen mind you, because they wanted to "full up their screen" as well?DragoonClawNZ wrote:Another reason it's 16:9 is because TV standards is suppose to be 16:9 these days and it would be pointless releasing it in 4:3 as there's already a perfect 4:3 release on DVD.
And that doesn't matter anyway. Anything originally made in fullscreen still gets released that way. The DBZ season sets are the only thing that I've ever seen crop 4:3 to 16:9 just so it can be "HD".
Be grateful the filler in Dragon Ball doesn't suck like the 3rd arc of Rurouni Kenshin.

If some random Spanish company could get DBox masters, why not Funi? I'm pretty sure that Funi is the number one licensor that Toei whores out the franchise to.NeptuneKai wrote:Which makes me think why they didn't try to find another source for new masters, I can understand not getting Dragonbox masters but somebody out there must of had a better master of the show.johnboy1 wrote:Damage to the masters they had on hand, apparently. The series doesn't start with the arrival of Raditz. Stop being lazy and watch Dragonball.
The funny thing is that Funimation was the company that got the Dragonbox masters for the Spanish DVD's (in partnership with Selecta Vision). They know that the US has a larger fan base of the series than Spain so they invest in multiple re-releases and wait as long as possible before giving us the best.Raki wrote:If some random Spanish company could get DBox masters, why not Funi? Them dragging this shit out is what angers me. By the time they release I doubt I would buy them. I buy the season sets because when I was a youth in 1998-1999, I am almost 23 now, All that really existed were VHS. There were a few Pioneer DBZ dvds, but I didn't own a DVD player, so I bought VHS tapes. I have a ton of the Funi episodes on VHS, which are now practically worthless. By the time I decided that I really wanted all the episodes on DVD(I had only been collecting figures), it was already to late. I still manged to get the vast majority of Dragon Ball on DVD (I have the whole series but two of the DVDs are from questionable sources) but it was two late for Z. Going through and getting all the singles seemed like a giant money pit. I bought up Just the Kid Buu saga and a few others here and there and I spent over 200 bucks for less episodes then appear on one season set. I buy the season sets because they're economical, and it's the show I love. If Funi for some reason eventually releases The Dragonbox on blu ray or something, I will probably buy that too.

Honestly If I never came here and heard that first podcast all those months ago, I would have never known about half the problems with remastered sets. That didn't stop me from buying them it just kinda made me notice everything people were pointing out all the time. Kinda like if you have a small stain on a shirt and you just can't stop looking at it.
I really don't think the average fan cares about all that stuff. Then again the average American fan doesn't import OST's and pay out the ass for Dragon Boxes either.
I completely respect your opinion, and I respect you. I enjoyed discussing this with you, even if I don't completely agree.

I'm in the generation of fans that started with Toonami, so I totally empathize with the feeling of having "missed the party", experiencing disappointment, and wanting to experience it myself. But I can't, that's how life is. Time is a bitch. The party is over. Kageyama, Kikuchi, and Maeda are off the sauce now; Yanami almost OD'd; Yamamoto got arrested; Toriyama's not going to light trash cans on fire and hang from the chandelier anymore. We can't get the band back together, and even if we could, everyone's either old, in poor health, or calmed way the fuck down. Best we're going to get, and are getting, is a party that's almost entirely devoid of the magic that made the original one so awesome that we even want more.
