A list of DB media... am I missing anything?

Discussion, generally of an in-universe nature, regarding any aspect of the franchise (including movies, spin-offs, etc.) such as: techniques, character relationships, internal back-history, its universe, and more.

A list of DB media... am I missing anything?

Post by johnboy1 » Sat Sep 04, 2004 5:58 pm

All right, I was just trying to make a list of all the DB media I would get if I had $350 million. Why? Just because. I'm excluding third-party books and all the video games becuase they'd just be a pain in the arse to list. I'd have to get English books because I can't read Japanese, but let's just forget that. If I misspell Japanes words, please correct me. So, for books:

All 34 volumes of the DB Kanzenban
All of the movie Tankoubon
All of the DBGT manga
All 10 Daizenshuu
Both DBGT Perfect Files

For videos:

All 153 episodes of DB
All 291 episodes of DBZ
All 64 episodes of DBGT
Both DBZ Specials
The DBGT Special
All 4 DB movies
All 13 DBZ movies
The DBZ "OVA" (note the quotes)

Am I missing anything? I know the two DBZ specials are recorded in the manga. How many volumes of the DBGT manga were there? Did they cover the DBGT Special or did it have a little Tankoubon of it's own? Speaking of the Tankoubon, did they only cover the DBZ movies, or did they cover the DB movies as well?

I did not include DB: The Magic Begins because that was made without permission from Toei, and is thus a "illegitimate child" of DB. Am I right or am I confused?

There are two companion volumes to the kanzenban DB manga, Dragonball LANDMARK and Dragonball FOREVER. There are also the DB and DBZ anime guides that have come out in the past year, Dragonball: Tenka-ichi Densetsu and Dragonball Z: Son Gokuu Densetsu.

The Trunks special chapter is included at the end of kanzenban vol. 34, but the Bardock special was never a chapter; it was anime first, and then Toriyama used Bardock in a couple of panels when Goku faces Freeza for the first time.

There is no DBGT manga to speak of. There are some comics of scenes from the series floating around the internet in French, but these do not appear to be of Japanese origin. There is a GT Special tankoubon, though. There are anime comics of every DB, DBZ, and DBGT movie and TV special, although I don't know if they're still in print or not.

Also... our Covers section may be of some use to you.

It's an unofficial Hong Kong-made production, based (it would seem) on the first DB movie. Cheesy as all Hell... although I'm one of the lucky ones who hasn't seen it.

So... glad to be of assistance. Daizenshuu EX is a fantastic resource for information, so feel free to take advantage of it.

Thank you! I've never heard of those first four books you mentioned. What exactly is in them? So the Bardock Special didn't come from the manga? Oh.

Was the entire DBGT story in one Tankoubon, or was it released in several volumes?

Also, some have told me that the Daizenshuu and Perfect Files are not official DB books and should be removed from my list as third party books. Is that true?

Are you kidding? They are the official books, you couldn't get much more official than those unless they were written by Toriyama himself.

The first two are collections of information about the manga, including character and story guides, favorite characters / wishes / etc. according to Japanese fans, galleries of foreign versions of the books, Q&A with Toriyama (and plenty of info on him, too), a "name origins" guide by Toriyama himself, and galleries of DB images drawn by other popular manga artists (including One Piece's Eiichirou Oda and Naruto's Masashi Kishimoto).

The latter two are all-encompassing guides to the DB and DBZ TV shows, including story, characters, episodes (including airdates and reasons why they didn't air certain weeks), and interviews between Toriyama and staff / cast from the shows. the DB guide also has interviews with individual voice actors. There will likely be a matching GT guide next year, assuming Toei puts out a GT DVD Box like it has with the other two series.
Was the entire DBGT story in one Tankoubon, or was it released in several volumes?
The GT story itself was never released as a manga in Japan. As I said, someone at some point scanned some "animation comics" in French, but Shueisha lists nothing of that nature on their website, so they would not seem to originate in Japan. The only GT manga there is, is of the TV Special.
Also, some have told me that the Daizenshuu and Perfect Files are not official DB books and should be removed from my list as third party books. Is that true?
Nope. They're official books by Shueisha, and the Daizenshuu, at least, were done in conjunction with Akira Toriyama. The "Perfect Files" have some conceptual art drawn by Akira Toriyama and quotes him in places, but it wasn't as closely linked to him as the Daizenshuu were.

Well, GT itself didn't have much from Toriyama, so just consider the Perfect Files to be the Daizenshuu of GT.

Don't the GT Perfect Files contain some art and concepts from Toriyama himself, or is my memory acting up?

I need to apologize to SaiyaJedi about the whole DBGT manga thing. When you said "GT Special tankoubon," I thought you meant "a special tankoubon for GT," not "a tankoubon for the GT Special." Sorry for the mix-up!

Those are actually found in Daizenshuu #7 along with some other random Shonen Jump exclusive illustrations he did. Like Piririn!

Ah. Well, then, who here has it? (We could make it a sticky thread in the "Staff Help Requests" section if need be...)

Why make them stickies, anyway? They're all important help topics you need answered for the site.

Note that the Piririn pic from Daizenshuu 7 is simply a super-small pre-cloloured pic of the one you have. Either that or Tory redrew it that way. It's JUST Piririn in the same position in pure black+white facing upwards instead of diagonally. My dad's installing the new scanner today (wheeeeee!!!) so I'll scan it sometime this week (first day of university tomorrow. Y'know)

You might as well scan the text around it, as well... it wouldn't make sense for it to appear in isolation, since it's so unusual. I bet that if someone (read: me) looked at the text on the same page, there might be some information about the drawing's creation.

So there. :P

Well, I tried scanning the pic of Piririn in Daizenshuu #7. It turned out a little blurry, but here it is:

Image

The applicable text relating to the picture is the writing below it (the writing next to it applies to the Gokuu picture). It's probably too blurry to read, so here is what the text says romanized: "1995nen WJ No.13 Minna no kangaeta fyuujon boshuu, no rei toshite kakareta Pikkoro to Kuririn no fyuujon. Namae wa "Piririn" dearu." I think it's basically saying it was drawn as an example of a fusion for an advertisement (the word "boshuu" seems to translate to "recruitment," but that doesn't seem to make as much sense to me, so I'm assuming that it's more along the lines of advertisement in this case. Those more proficient in Japanese, please feel free to correct me ^_^;;)

I believe it's in reference to a contest, as the original scan from that issue of Jump (as crappy as it is) makes reference to things like "prizes" and "dream fusions" -- in other words, fans could enter to win stuff by creating their own combinations.

Thanks for giving the issue number, though. I wonder if Shueisha sells back-issues...

Aw man. The french version of that text just said "Prillin, fusion of Piccolo and Krillin demanded by the readers. (Weekly Jump 1995 #13)"

Who knows what else is wrong?! :x
