Super Dragon Ball Z
So what's everyone's general opinion of Super Dragon Ball Z? I understand compared to Budokai 2, 3, Shin 1, Shin 2, BT1-3, it's ugly. But it's always stood out as my absolute favorite gameplay wise. But I've always been a traditional 2-D fighting game fan, so finally being able to input commands (forward down forward punch etc) was a huge breath of fresh air for me. The 3-D plain didn't bother me at all, and I enjoyed the dramatic effect of only going SSJ1 and having it be a temporary timed thing.
I dunno. I just can't get enough of it. Too bad there's not going to be a Super Dragon Ball Z 2... to my knowledge at least.

I'm pretty sure you'll get some strong opposition there, particularly comparing it to the Tenkaichi series.Travis Touchdown wrote:So what's everyone's general opinion of Super Dragon Ball Z? I understand compared to Budokai 2, 3, Shin 1, Shin 2, BT1-3, it's ugly.
Me, I never really got into it. I played it once, and its really short. And I only play it now and again when I'm playing all my old Dragonball games (like Final Bout) just for the heck of it because I'm bored.

The only good thing about this game was 23rd Budokai ChiChi.

I owned the game, and I enjoy it! However, I only paid $8 for it, and thats probably the only reason I got it in the first place.
The game is just not very deep.
Don't get me wrong, it is definitely the most fun DBZ game I've played, the gameplay is awesome. Its very difficult to master, but when you do, you feel a greater sense of accomplishment than when you master a game in the Sparking!/Tenkaichi series, because the gameplay in those games just aren't as complicated as SDBZ. I personally like how it can sometimes be nigh impossible to perform the analog moves, because then when I do get them, I feel so proud of myself! In Sparking!/Tenkaichi, I can do a special move upwards of 6 times per match. It really loses its shine after a while.
However, SDBZ is not the deepest DBZ game ever. It lacks replay value. There are only a few stages, and less than 20 characters. Plus, the fact that there is no VSCOM mode really hurts it in my opinion.
All in all, it is easily the most fun DBZ game I've played next to Budokai 3(And I've played them all since Budokai 1). And it's definitely worth a pick up now, if you don't have it already(Especially since it's probably in the bargain bin).
With that said, it is definitely one of the more fun DBZ games, but it lacks depth.(Content wise, not gameplay)

You say it's not a "deep" game, but then qualify that by explaining the quantity of game modes and available characters. That doesn't accurately reflect the "depth" of the gameplay, though... if that's what you meant to say, I'd have to argue that you're quite wrong.Big Momma wrote:However, SDBZ is not the deepest DBZ game ever. But we've had this discussion over and over and over and over and over on this forum for the last few years

Yeah, I couldn't think of the right way to put it. I was kind of comparing it to games like Budokai 3 that have 38 characters and Sparking!/Tenkaichi with about 15 stages. I was comparing it to those games, instead of the standard fighting game. >.<VegettoEX wrote:You say it's not a "deep" game, but then qualify that by explaining the quantity of game modes and available characters. This is one of my favorite DBZ games ever. The attacks, customization, and overall combat system is incredible. I think it's better then Tenkaichi to be honest.

My opinion is the same as EX's. I love the Street Fighter-style gameplay! I like being able to customize the looks and skills of the characters. I also like the fact that I can get through the entire main "arcade" mode in one sitting.
Its deep in the sense that it takes a long time to master and get everything, but its also something I can just pick up for about 20 minutes and blast through a few intense fights before going on with my day.
I also like the fact that the best specials in the entire game are super difficult to pull off and that the normal Super Specials don't require me to sit through a minute or so stock footage coupled with random Paper-Rock-Scissors button mashing. Its just a fighting game.
Another thing that makes me biased toward it, though, is that its supposed to be portraying the manga and not the anime. The manga is my favorite way to go through the Dragonball story. The way I imagine everything happening in the manga is at the intense filler-devoid pace that Super DBZ goes at. I feel like I'm playing the freakin' manga.
I like it so much that the English cast doesn't bother me while I play it.
The only fighters I like more than Super DBZ is actual Street Fighter (preferably SFA3).
I picked up SDBZ for free in a used-games deal at Gamestop a couple weeks ago.
Maybe my opinion would be different if I had someone to play with, but.... meh, I still place it way down my list of favorite DBZ games. I really want to like the game, if nothing else than because it has ChiChi as a playable fighter, but it's not doing it for me.
And Freeza is a cheap sonuvabitch.

Always, always, always. Particularly when he breaks the scouter. I think it's a tie between Freeza and Vegeta as to who spams the most Ki attacks.

General consensus? SDBZ is way more fun when you have 2 players, not so much when you're by yourself.
And I have to disagree with Rocketman, my vote goes to Vegeta, the master of all ki based spam attacks.
(If you time his attack that sweeps ki blasts across the arena so that your opponent is right in front of you, you can do some MAJOR damage

Decent game. I like the skill tree and increasing the BP. It's always fun to make scouters explode when playing other people. I'd like Yamucha in there (Roga Fufu Ken always makes a decent fighting game move) but I can live without it.
Only problem is... I suck at fighting games, especially in two-player and there's not nearly enough people who would play it around here for me to get better that way.

Not the only good thing about it, but I wanted to bring up the fact that she also has the skimpy outfit she wore as a kid for an alternate costume.Rocketman wrote:The only good thing about this game was 23rd Budokai ChiChi.
Seriously though, I actually started to play the game again. It's definitely fun and makes me miss fighting games of the old days that required actual skills rather than button mashing to be any good (although Freeza is an ass when it comes to spamming). That and characters have their own fighting styles, which is another plus, as opposed to the DBZ fighting games of today.
Being able to customize the characters to use OTHER characters' moves is also pretty awesome, as well as being able to customize each character to have certain upgrades and moves of their own.
Although having to get the Dragon Balls over and over again to unlock everything for every character does get tedious though.
