Buying the R4 Saga of Goku DVD

Discussion, generally of an in-universe nature, regarding any aspect of the franchise (including movies, spin-offs, etc.) such as: techniques, character relationships, internal back-history, its universe, and more.

Buying the R4 Saga of Goku DVD

Post by Abnormal Freak » Tue Oct 21, 2008 9:11 am

While waiting for my account to be verified, I browsed page after page of the old threads searching for an answer to my question, and found a few threads but still no real solution. The last thread was from August or September.

So I'm looking for this uncut DVD of the first thirteen episodes, but it appears Madman is only offering them in a box set for roughly $100. I already have all the other R1 releases. (Thankfully I picked them up a couple years ago when I could get them for about $20 each on DeepDiscount.com. Apparently they cost quite a bit now.)

I'm assuming the 2-DVD set is out of print, so I'm wondering if it's possible there's any place that may still have a new copy in stock (I did a Google search for Australian online stores and they only had the two box sets plus a couple of the 2-DVD sets that aren't volume 1), or if there's a place I can get a copy used for not a whole lot of money, or if maybe someone here has a copy on-hand they'd like to sell me, or some other solution.

Assuming Lions Gate/Trimark/Kidmark ever lets go of the rights to these episodes, by the time that happens FUNimation will probably have new DVDs all rarin' to go, with the cropped widescreen, contrast-boosted, heavily DVNR'd image and whatnot, which would be unbearable. (I refuse to buy the DBZ season sets for this very reason, even though I've been dying to see DBZ uncut and subbed ever since I first started watching it when I was 11 or 12 or whatever.)

If I can't get ahold of the 2-DVD set, I'm thinking maybe ordering the first box set isn't such a bad idea. It's like $100 or whatever, which is absurd, and is about the price I paid for all of the R1 sets combined, but I really want to see these episodes uncut and subbed. I've held on to my censored, edited, and dubbed VHS tapes forever, and would like to replace them with something better. (Though honestly, I don't think the dub's all that bad, and I'm surprised the dinosaur decapitation is intact.)

Only thing is, I'm unsure of the video quality. Are Madman's DVDs just PAL conversions of FUNimation's releases, or is there a possibility that they have better transfers? (Perhaps complete with all the original openings and end credits.)

I already have a region-free, PAL-to-NTSC converting DVD player, I just need the DVDs!

I have the Aussie R4 Pal Release of The saga of Goku, And the transfers are excellent, To my knowledge it is EXACT same quality as the R1 releases.

As to where to get it, It sometimes comes up on Australian Ebay, for less than $20 aus dollars, Which would be like $15Usd.

Hope that helps.

They're just PAL releases of the FUNimation discs, the video quality and content is identical, right down to only one version of the opening and ending, no next episode previews either.

I have the madman boxes and I'm pretty sure they all have dubtitles.

I think Madman improved the font on the subtitles, much easier to read. And I like what the did with the menu screens.

The Madman sets also have (dub) credits plastered over the ending theme, while the FUNi sets have clean endings.

You do? Why? I generally find yellow subs to be the easiest to read, since they stand out more (On the rare occasion that I actually use subs that is).

I don't know. I think I'm just used to seeing the white subtitles of Dattebayo and Kaizoku fansubs that when I see yellow it just distracts me.

I personally feel that the yellow stands out TOO MUCH, and that the text is too large. Perhaps my odd vision impairment that makes smaller text easier to read--I have no depth perception and almost NOTHING as far as peripheral vision goes...but am usually perfectly fine with reading smaller print.

But still.

I just find it to be aesthetically pleasing and less distracting to the actual footage to have the smaller, white subtitles. I can read them fine, and they don't look like they're from an insanely old VHS fansub.

And I see it differently--I don't mind the unprofessional look on unprofessional releases. Fan releases are allowed a bit of unprofessionalism, but professional releases...aren't. xP

I expect them to look clean in every respect, I suppose.

I was speaking in terms of footage :)

I'm with you on the yellow subtitles though, I like something that slaps me in the face before I read it.

The series doesn't start with the arrival of Raditz. Stop being lazy and watch Dragonball.

What the heck happened here:

http://www.madman.com.au/actions/catalo ... ethod=view

Last time I checked, the boxes didn't look like this. Also, is this now a "season set" type box, in that it looks like it has all the dvds put into one big individual case instead of a few cases?

A member on here stated that Madman changed the packaging a while back. Also, while browsing Funi's forum I saw that user recently purchased the sets from Madman and confirmed that the packaging was changed. Kinda sends a low blow to those wanted to sell the disks they don't need.
