Why does this forum go down every now and then?
The forum can't be that heavy on bandwidth.

It's based on how many visitors the forums get, basically.
Mike can only has so much bandwidth a month. To get more would cost him. And we've got no right to demand anything like that since this whole site is non-profit and ad free.
So around the end of each month, the bandwidth tends to get used up, so the host site blocks access to the boards from anybody until the beginning of the next month.
I've probably just offended anybody who has a better grasp of what bandwidth actually is and means but that's the long and short of it.

Bandwidth is the amount of data transfer a webmaster is allotted by his host plan on a month-to-month basis. Like you said, the notice means that the bandwidth allowance for this month has all been used up. In Mike's case, I'm guessing that it's the occasional influx of new visitors that triggers the notice.
