New Fans

I was listening to one of the old podcasts last night. #134 I think. Anyway, people were being interviewed about what they thought that the biggest issue facing fandom at the time was. I believe it was godofchaos who said that it was fans themselves, and evenutally it got worked over to how there needs to be new fans, because in order for the show to survive in popular culture it can't just be the same old guys until they die, and then it disappears.

So, who has been a fan for less than 2 years? How did you get into? What about it piqued your interest?

Hopefully the response to this will bode well for the future of Dragonball fandom.

I just got in to DBZ. I used to like it the same as any other 4th grader when I was a kid, but the season sets have really got me into the show. I also introduced my friend to Dragon Ball Z. But we both started with Dragon Ball.

I downloaded a torrent of the entire series of Dragon Ball (because it's way to hard to buy the series as it is right now in the states). Once I finished DB, I went out and bought the sets of DBZ. Now I have something of a collection going.

Well, I have been a fan of the series for about two years exactly now. I was introduced to the show by my brother who had been introduced to the show by his friend...who first saw it on Toonami (here's a much more extensive summary, it'll go in signature once I edit it to essay quality).

Since then my fandom has exploded.

My first exposure was through the airing of the FUNi dub right before it ended permanently in late 2006. I have grown more onto the original Japanese version since then but I am still very grateful to FUNi for allowing me (and the people that got me into the franchise) the opportunity to fall in love.

I really have no idea what "piqued my interest", this is the only manga or anime that I had cared to watch an episode of. I guess there's just some magical charm about it.

I've never thought of myself as a hope or part of the future of the fandom, but I'm up for the job. I plan to be around for a long, long time and I hope to introduce some new fans to this community in that time.

I was a fan from 5th grade until 7th grade (1999 - 2002) then I tried to get my priority straight (as in, I was way too obsessed with D&D and DBZ) so I went cold-turkey. Hell, I never even watched much of DB at all and none of GT (that was a good thing though). Back then, I thought I knew a lot about the series, but in reality I had hardly even scratched the surface, I had no clue about the daizenshuu for one thing. Fast forward to the summer of my junior year of high school. I was about to to go to St. Louis and I wanted a game to play on my PSP for the ride. I work for Gamestop, and when we take in systems (consels and handhelds) we test them. I had tested a PSP with the game Shin Budokai a day before my trip. I decided to get it because it was fun and it would "bring me back." I beat the game over the trip and loved it all. I knew it was based of a DBZ movie so I decided to watch it. After that one I decided to watch the other movies, but that was it. Well, about a month later I found myself right back into the series full-throttle, discovering worlds of material I never even knew about back in the day (PlanetNamek.com was the most I knew online). During the whole high school gap of DBZ-lessness I would every once in a while rember it... ahhhh, nostalgia, love the feeling

. I am currently on my 3rd viewing through the series, next I will watch it in Japanese and sub'ed, to try a new approach. I am pumped to see that there are still tons of fans out there and I am glad to see new material (New special on the 24th!!!). So I guess technically I have been a fan longer but sorta not at the same time if that makes any sense at all

I am a long time dub fan (12-ish years), but with the release of the orange bricks I am on my way through the original version for the first time. Hearing the new voices and music, it's like watching it for the first time.

P.S. No, I didn't think that Bardock was a brilliant scientist for 12 years, just because I had only seen the dub. I knew he was really a Ph.D in French Literature.

Yes, I'm a newbie to this forum and probably the newest Dragonball fan here too.
I just got into Dragonball this last March. So that is about 10 months? I got into it because my boyfriend (a long time dbz fan) plugged in the first Broly movie for my kids to watch. They loved it!
After that I decided to watch every episode on my own and now I'm buying the discs and watching them with my kids.

The storyline is what interested me the most.

That would also require buying a region 4 DVD player... damn, I wish I had just a little more money

I got into it around when the Cell Saga first aired on Toonami. Don't remember the exact year, but stayed with it ever since. I still remember the first part of it I saw: I just flipped the channel and Cell was staring down Piccolo with his arm half sucked dry and saying that he'd give Piccolo some last words.

The time you take in looking up a torrent and downloading the series for free, you can go to these sites and order them. They are quite cheap compared to MSRP for the R1 double sets. Also, getting a region free player isn't that hard either.

Just to throw in my own two cents on the current topic divergence, the main problem for someone in the USA buying the Madman releases is -NOT- regions, its the PAL format. US televisions run on NTSC, a different format of video. To work with the madman releases, you need a region free DVD player and either a TV that plays PAL video, or a PAL to NTSC converter of some sort. Now if you have an HDTV this is less of an issue, since its a digital thing, but if its an old tube TV, this still applies.

As for new fandom, as you can guess from my join date I'm an OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOLD DB/Z fan (as of 1995 with FUNimations first dub of the Pilaf Saga). However, I have introduced it to my roomate very recently. We just finished going through Dragon Ball (I showed him the first 13 episodes on a DVDR copy of my DB VHS tapes from the afforementioned first dub, then proceeded to the FUNimation DVDs), and just started DBZ on the first season set. Once we pass season two's orange brick, it'll be the old single volumes to the end of the show.

He really liked Dragon Ball, so theres at least one new fan I can speak for (I may bring him here later, I've avoided spoiling him, he didn't even know what a Saiyan was until yesterday when Raditz showed up, and he still doesnt know what a Super Saiyan is, and I want to keep it that way).

I was a fan since way way long ago. I think when I was in second grade, which would make it the year 1995 or so. Back during the original FUNimation/Saban dub. Then by the time I got to 4th grade, it exploded. People would print pictures out from the internet and walk around with huge folders of Dragon Ball pictures and fanfics. Dragon Ball became this entity of its own. People were so fascinated about this thought that there was a Japanese version out there that went far beyond what we got and was so different. People would believe fanfics, etc. Then around 6th grade, I learned a lot more. At that time, they started spinning the newly dubbed Frieza Saga and I did a lot of research on it online. I saw some stuff in Japanese, read summaries, etc. Then around 2004 or so, I started buying the DVDs and would watch them in Japanese. And yet I was a fan of the Japanese version years and years before I saw it ironically. Just because I knew it was different and original. I had the PS1 games in Japanese, which I was IN LOVE with. And the desire to see the original was inspiration for me to get the DVDs. I already had every episode taped from Cartoon Network. But I wanted that Japanese version. I'm a lot happier with my decision
