Movie commentary?

Post by BrollysKin » Wed Nov 19, 2008 6:16 pm

I think I made a topic on this idea a year or so ago, however I thought it would be a good idea to bring it back in th espotlight.

I think it would be a fun thing (for the listeners anways  ) if the cast of the podcast were to get together, watch one of the dragonball movies and record a commentary on it.

It would be similar to what rifftrax does, however it wouldn't need to be comedic in tone, just whatever popped into your mind while you were watching the movie. Maybe a part that never made sense to you, or a part you always loved. More or less what we would hear if we were sitting next to you while oyu were watching it.

Just a cool idea i thought I would throw back out there, not sure how much extra work it would be. Maybe you could do it as a christmas special or something, certainly not a weekly thing.

That would be pretty cool, I've always wondered what it would be like to watch Dragonball with the daizex crew.

I've thought about posting a suggestion like this myself. it would be a great thing to listen too. Hell, even the dub commentary on the movie 1 & 2 double feature was pretty good, and there is no way it could turn out much worse than that.

I would give up my account for them to do movie 1-13 commentary.

I would also love to see this, mostly for the tv specials.

What would be even better was if he was watching all the versions he owns while doing so.`
For all the flack that FUNimation gets on this forum for their quote about DBZ, there's some modicum of truth to it: a 9-year-old is born every day. Or in some cases, "reborn". DBZ may be a kids' show, but it's been so close to so many hearts all over Japan, America, and quite possibly, even the world.
"GAH! VIDEO DROPOUT ON THE FANSUB!"
"Why the hell are these subs so bad?"
et cetera. that's what I'd expect. xD

XD *Imagines VegettoEX and minions sitting in the control room watching a wall covered in monitors, each playing a different version of DBZ movie1*
*then imagines the Shredder watching April O'neil's broadcast on the Foot and slamming his gauntlet down and declaring "Find her. Silence her."*
*Imagines Garlic Jr saying this to his minions when he discovers that ChiChi was alive to relay information to Goku*

Um, yeah, *twelfths*. :D

I too am in full support of this idea (I'm sure it would turn out a lot like Mystery Science Theater 3000 :P).

Definitely something I've wanted to do FOREVER, and DBZ movie 1 would of course be the first one we do :P.

For something like that, it would be a matter of making sure I have all the proper equipment to get the absolute best quality sound. As I've noted in another thread, I'm actually bringing home some upgraded equipment from work this weekend to toy around with, so if that works out, I know what to aim towards.

My thinking is that since a "commentary track" is much less time-sensitive than some of our podcast episodes (despite my wanting to make them all as timeless as possible), we should certainly aim for the highest, most professional sound quality possible on it (which would also allow people to re-burn their own DVDs and add the extra audio track if they so desire).

Would also want to do even more crazy research on the movie to be able to add in as much background and tidbits as possible in-between observational commentary.

But yeah. In the plans. No timeframe (maybe if and when Julian ever comes back from Japan :P), but it's in the back of my head.

While your welcome to do it anyway you desire, I would hope that it wouldn't be relative only to the original japanese version and would at least be partially relevant to the dubbed material as well.

If I cover one version, shouldn't I cover them all? That is to say... if I'm going to cover the FUNimation version (and even then, which of the various FUNimation dubs of it, especially one(s) I've never actually seen?), shouldn't I also cover the German version? The Italian version? The Spanish version?

The Japanese version is the single version that everyone in all territories can enjoy...

Not deciding on anything right this second, but at least putting that thought out there.

In general, though, a movie is a movie is a movie, and unless there's some changed dialogue and story and such in places, it doesn't really matter which language is in the background that WE are watching to record the dialogue. All of the various meta about its creation and things that happen are still in there, regardless of which language YOU watch the movie in.

Well, I'm sure--and I know you've brought this up previously--you have fond memories of the Ocean dub.
