Cha-La Head Cha-La: Side By Side Comparison Shots.

Post by Tanooki Kuribo » Mon Nov 24, 2008 4:31 pm

Drabaz got me thinking (damn you Drabaz). What would it look like if we compared the original Cha-La to the new one. Well, I knew DragonBall was a bit aged but... this really shows it (not that it's a bad thing). Awesome...

I know this android scene below is only in one version of a few slightly different versions of the Cha-La themed openings. But it really don't matter what was there because the 2008 version doesn't take this particular scene(s) from any previous version of the Cha-La openings.

(Yes I totally stole...er...borrowed this image. When I tried to capture this shot it always was a frame off. )

Edit: Please, don't turn take the image quality to seriously. Let's not start up another season set argument in here.

Too bad Tien was only in the opening.

The new opening is mondo-cool.

I actually like the SSJ look in the original Head Cha La better.

The new dragon logo at the start of the Special's opening really bugs me. Other than that, it's all pure love for the new Head Cha-La animation.

SSJ Goku's hair looks like garbage in the new one. Other than that, I think it's great. The Kid Gohan/Goten screencaps are almost completely identical, and I think that's pretty awesome.

I think SSJ Goku looks a lot better in the new one.

The Super Saiyan transformation by Goku at the end of Cha La was an "OMG AWESOME" moment for me.

It works in the context of the special and within the art style of the special. I like it.

SSJ hair is so day-glow gold now, its hilarious.

There's such a huge difference in how the characters are drawn.
It makes the original look more old-school than it already is. XD

Is it just me, or does the logo at the beginning seem lazily done... :?
And I'm not a big fan of the new SS(J) hair.

Besides, that, it looks great, I love it. :D

Yeah, I'm not liking the Super Saiyan hair either.

Also, Piccolo isn't as green as he used to be. Although that might be due more to the type of coloring they used on the artwork.

If there's one thing I don't like about the newest version, is the Shen Long icon at the beginning. I love everything else.
And comparing Goku's faces it makes me feel they are totally different shows. I don't know if that's good or bad. Anyway I really like them both, with one I feel nostalgia, with the other excitement, probably because it's still very new to me.

I remember watching some Yu Yu Hakusho in my dorm and having my neighbor walk in and be amazed at just how different the animation is from current anime. Maybe it was because the only recent anime I've been keeping up with is Naruto (and even that I don't watch that often and just go with the manga), but I had no idea what he was talking about... until now. I knew a new animated special for DBZ meant snappy new color schemes and less stuff like variations in line thickness, but I didn't know the difference would be so apparent.

Eh, maybe it was just because of the particular animators for that special? I mean, I've seen a couple other recent anime and this special was the only one where it seemed really apparent that a computer was involved somewhere in the animation process. Though it could just be because I'm unknowingly comparing it to the older animated DB stuff :?...

I think the whole intent of using the different logo in the new special is to actually use the original logo from the manga.

It looks so different because it's all digital crap. no hand-drawn cels or anything, all on the computer.
For all the flack that FUNimation gets on this forum for their quote about DBZ, there's some modicum of truth to it: a 9-year-old is born every day. Or in some cases, "reborn". DBZ may be a kids' show, but it's been so close to so many hearts all over Japan, America, and quite possibly, even the world.
See how things look good in widescreen when they're actually framed for widescreen presentation? ;p

It took a bit for me to get used to the new style, but I definitely dug the intro being an homage. The logo I didn't dig though (and I'm pretty sure that isn't the original logo, is it?).

Could someone put up the shot of Vegeta with Trunks on his back?

I think that was an awesome new touch. XD

Actually, everything is still drawn by hand, but it is drawn straight onto a tablet/touchscreen LCD. The main process of drawing is basically the same as it always was, but instead of tangible paper, they use digital paper. Go watch the ANNtv "Inside Toei Animation" special.
