Getting into Dragonball figures

Post by Rena Rune » Wed Nov 26, 2008 2:17 am

I'm looking to get into Dragonball figures.

I mostly collect roughly 1/12 scale figures, Kamen Rider stuff, Marvel stuff, Figmas etc. The DB Hybrid figures look like the best option right now, it's a shame they're not in scale but I don't particularly need them to interact with my other figs.

Of course the problem is in turn that the DB Hybrid figures only have a very limited selection and one overly biased towards the different SSJ forms and fusions which to be honest I find a little boring(though the style of the line reminds me of Hyper Dimension on the SNES which had a few of them so I excuse it for that). I really want a Krillin that's in scale with them, that has decently posability. Also I could really do with some of the female characters, 18 and Bulma.

I really like this Bulma figure -

http://cgi.ebay.com/Dragonball-Z-6-BULM ... otohosting

How big is it though? It'd probably look way too big with them, it says it's 6 inches but that could be wrong since most Irwin DBZ figures are 5 which is only a little bigger than the Hybrids.

If there's a similar style Bulma figure(combat gear + gun) that's more in scale with the Hybrids, it'd be great to find that. Most of the Bulma figs have ridiculous faces.

I'm not interested in the very limited pose/statue characters, though I might pick up the DBZ creatures figures.

I have that Bulma figure. It is roughly 6 inches, and it's from IF Labs' DragonBall line (not Irwin). It's actually my favourite line; I think the detail and paint jobs are very high-quality. Some of the best I've seen from DragonBall figures, in my opinion. If you're looking for female characters, the line also has Mai and Lunch.

I'm an IF Labs fan too.

Check out these site for all DB/Z/GT toys:
www.supersaiyantoys.com
www.dragonballtoys.com

Theres a whole community who are made figure collectors (I'm one of them) so feel free to ask any questions. If I don't know, I'm sure one of my friends will.

Be warned though, its very addictive, expensive and there is always, always something new. :D

Yeah I tried registering at DBZ toys a few days ago but they haven't approved my account yet :(

That Bulma is definitely far too big. I'd need one no bigger than 5 inches, and it has to be pretty articulated or at least look pretty badass.

I'm making an action figure comic, and I don't like having entirely male casts. I could make up a new female character as a custom but I'm pulling the same trick with a Kamen Rider comic I'm doing :P

If anyone's done action figure comics for stuff like that before I could do with some help. The ones I've done before have been kinda bad.

The rules are fairly clear before you sign up. I don't feel like because someones new they are allowed to ignore them. By accident or not I was just informing them it wasn't acceptable. I don't think I was being rude at all yet you called me out on it so you obviously disagree. I personally tried to write it nicely and in a down to earth fashion without sounding like a pretentious mini-mod so sorry if I failed to meet your expectations.

Tell me how was I pretentious, I'm honestly curious how telling you that we don't randomly bump topics when you dont get an answer to your post within a few hours is pretentious. This topic wasn't even on the second page.

This is amazingly off topic and I'd rather avoid this discussion as not to lessen my chances of getting some help.

Yep, another off topic thread.
Anyway R.R. it will take a few days for you account to register as they tend to be a little slack over there. I'm not aware of anyone making a full comic but there has been some previous Scene Stealers competitions which have been pretty cool. If I can find the thread, I will post it here. I will give it some thought for a 5 inch articulated bulma. Someone a DBT's will know.

Heres a short list of 5" or so sized Bulmas... I'm sure there may be more, but these are the ones I know:

IRWIN:

BANPRESTO:
http://www.supersaiyantoys.com/Banpresto/MINI_2.jpg
She's not all that articulated, but she's probably the best one there is. All the 5' Banpresto figures in this line are great.

POPY:
http://www.supersaiyantoys.com/popymagnetic.html
I don't own this figure, so I'm not sure if she's exactly 5". She looks great though! I do have the Roshi and he's wonderful. GREAT articulation in those figures.

Hope this helps, and welcome to Dragonball toy collecting! It's a great hobby!

If your having trouble registering on DBT, PM me your SN and I'll get you in. Registration controls had to be put up for several reasons, and I believe for the most part DBT is benefiting from it.

All the best,

Well I'm Rena Rune there too :P

Thanks for the advice. I love that Popy Tien. Can't seem to find any of those figs on eBay though.

I'm unsure that Bulma is that great though, her hair's not as green hued as I'd like and I really want one with a gun. I'd forgive more limited articulation if she had a gun.

I think I'll just go with that 6 pack of figures it's cheap anyway, I might get the 6 inch Bulma too because it looks nice.

I'll need to find a good Freeza figure too. I know there's that one people normally use in place of a Hybrid but I don't like the look of it's articulation.

I'm wondering what Frieza to get now. The Ultimate action one looks a bit odd, almost robotic. Though it would be cool if there was a posable figure of the cyborg Frieza.

Awesome, looks fun. The articulation and detail on those are better than I thought. Is there a normal Frieza in that line?

I own several hundred, if not thousand, DB/Z/GT figures and toys, and if I was to start all over, I know exactly what I would solely collect. If you want the most variety of characters, you should collect these new items coming out of Banpresto. They haven't been released yet, but some of them are shown here:
http://www.modxtoy.com/newboard/lofiver ... 37916.html
Scale is a pet peeve of mine, and I don't like how the scale isn't very good (Baby Gohan and the Saibaman are huge and so are the Ginyu frog and his lady friend), the character likenesses are GREAT though.

Another collection of neat figures come on little orange bases. I have one set of these and they are really great in variety:
http://www.asianalternative.com/catalog ... d4ea254b3c

There are a lot of what I am talking about mid-page in the above link. I purchased mine as a set of 24 (missing the mystery figure) on ebay for about $1.25 each. They are pretty small and super deformed compared to the previous suggestion.

If you don't like the Super Deformed figures at all, then the Soul of Hyper Figuration line is worth a look. They are incredible in accuracy, though not as diversified as the above two collections. I mildly collect these, but they tend to be very expensive. About $8 each on ebay.

Here's a very large picture I took of my black and white Yamcha and my colored version of Bardock:
http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f232/ ... G_2407.jpg

It's the best Yamcha made to date, but it is a shame they are only 2 inches tall.
