How hard is this game to play?

I mean, when it comes to games where I can actually understand the language I'm not the best gamer, I don't know how much trouble I would have with a game in Japanese.

Are the controls quick to pick up, and is it simple to follow without knowing what the heck they are saying?

And in the end, is the game worth the trouble?

Have you played a Super Smash Bros. game before? It's basically the exact same concept. I also found the game to be more import-friendly than its predecessor, as well... and besides, there's nothing you can't play (even in another language) thanks to the internet :D.

If you're interested, we reviewed the game back on Episode #0062 of the podcast.

I just recently picked it up and haven't stopped playing since. Like Mike said,
it's very much like Smash Bros. The only problem I've found is reading the mission objectives, and thus, I use a FAQ to help me there.

If you're only a fan of DB, I wouldn't really recommend it. On the other hand, if there's at least one other series represented in the game that you like, it should definitely be a purchase.

Thanks for that! I'll check that out now. :D

Yes, I've played Super Smash Bros. Brawl, and to be honest, the thought of a Shonen Jump version of that excites me more than a little.

And Ex-Dubbie, I am not only a fan of Dragon Ball (although, that's definitely my pick of the bunch), I am also into some of the other series that appear to be involved in this game.

Yeah, the game is really fun, had it since release, that's why it makes me sad. I spent a whole year after getting it without having wifi and still enjoyed playing. Then a little while later I finally got wifi and it was hell of a game, a totally different game from simply fighting the computer.

Although the JUS community's a bit obnoxious, both in-game and off. In-game are the hackers who STILL constantly play and annoy you just to get wins and then there's the normal forum communities of JUS players where they're all supreme egotists.

What's even more sad is how the game is dying down now. WE NEED ANOTHER SEQUEL TO THESE GAMES AND FAST!

I mirror VegettoEX's reply word-for-word. JUS is much more playable than JSS for a non-Japanese speaking gamer. An FAQ will be your best companion guide since you'll need it to figure out the mission objectives and the basic menu options. While the mission objectives will be a bit of an obstacle, a lot of them are repeated over and over, so you end up sort of memorizing them a bit with repeated play (at least I did).

Overall, the game is amazing. I enjoyed the "koma unlock" system from JSS a little better, but JUS is just such a better game overall, it's easy to overlook than one altered mechanic. While this game is a bit pricey, especially if you don't usually buy imports, it's worth every penny. The game has so many unlockables that you'll be playing it for weeks. Throw online play into the mix and you'll be playing it for months.

I'm with you there. They need to take all the complaints received from Ultimate Stars (Big 3 anyone?) and fix them and then just start upgrading EVERYTHING. Everything recent as well as more characters.

Overall, it's worth getting! But sadly, the Dragonball characters aren't exactly.. 'High tier' (apart from 3-Koma Trunks, but that's just annoying tier ;_; ). They involve quite a bit of skill to use compared to easier characters like Ichigo or Luffy.

It's pretty much Smash Bros with manga characters. Which is absolutely fucking awesome.

There really isn't a language barrier for this game too, which is great.

If you happen to have an R4 or any other DS flash cards, a full translation of the game has been released. Google it or check out /rs/ on 4Chan =P

C'mon, man. Don't do that small-text shit, and don't promote bootlegs. I can't give any less of a rat's ass what you do on your own time with your own stuff, but this is *not* that kind of place.

We definitely need another one. Although it still will have to be an import..... stupid licensing.

I've been playing JUS recently, as well, and have to agree that it is totally worth the purchase, especially for a Jump fan.

From the Dragon Ball side though (this has been mentioned already, but, I figured it deserved repeating), Goku and the rest of the Dragon Ball characters all kinda... Suck. They don't play nearly as well as a good chuck of other characters (Luffy from One Piece is incredibly over powered... Not that I mind or anything). I think I may have used Gotenks in Jump Super Stars, but I haven't unlocked him in the sequel.

If you don't mind Dragon Ball being a little bit overshadowed, and some minor-slowdown during the busier moments of game-play, then it's a manga fan's dream come true.

Well, Luffy is story modes main character so it would break all the molds if the main hero wasn't ridiculously overpowered.

But to watch Goku fight with Rukia and Bo-bobo..... priceless.

Goku's great if you know how to use him well. And he's packing plenty of power in his higher-koma stages.

Exactly what I was gonna say. Six Koma and up, Goku's a very good, balanced character. Well, actually, his 8 Koma, being Vegetto, is one of the most overpowered characters ever. Spirit Sword can KO opponents with about 3 hits.

Yeah.

The Dragonball characters are great when you know how to use them.

Agreed, Vegetto's sword special is deadly. Also, Gohan and Vegeta have potential to be real nuisances when you have the skill to use them correctly as well.

Actually, 6 koma and 7 koma are a bit meh IMO, although also ok to use. To casual JUS fans like on gamefaqs, including myself find 5 koma Goku to be the best one out of the lot next to his 8 Koma/Vegetto one considering 5 koma can use a really good Kaioken combo while the following are just Genki Dama users who get owned before they can use it. Thankfully Vegetto's Spirit Sword replaces the Genki Dama which makes me happy. ^_^

Boo, Gotenks and Freeza are also really good DB characters in the game, I like to use Gotenks out of that three but most people seem to use Freeza on wifi. I haven't seen much of Boo anymore since a while back, dunno about these days though.

Fun game! Really nice to pick-up and play on the train or the bus. I find the game to be pretty easy, but fight friends or online can be hard. Some people fight really cheap, in particular Japanese people. Mr. EX would know what I'm talking about.

Funny story, I got ganged by a 8 panel Luffy, 5 panel Fuseke, and 6 panel Gintama. Luffy would just hit me down and plow me away. Fuseke stopped my ability to move. Gintama is just plain annoying.
Then after they beat me, I ran out of characters, they went into a tie breaker. They all stood there, all got a tie, first place, and a new score to their record.
Gohan: "You're a Buddhist." Kuririn: "A hungry Buddhist!"

I feel your pain.. It's happened more than once to me.

I just got done getting beaten down by someone who was spamming Jotaro's 'ORA ORA ORA' attack. It was one of those things where he linked his Jotaro to L/R and was constantly pressing them and he'd instantly send out a barrage of fists while I was trying to get up.

When ever I would get him into a combo, he would run away by using Lenalee.

So very irritating.

Ah well, Aya's 2 koma(some girl from that strawberry icon manga) prevents people from using supports by slapping the support seal on them, plus she's fast and breaks combos as usual. She's a favorite among people who hate spammers, although sometimes they get out of hand and spam her themselves just to restart the seal and to break combos for the hell of it when getting caught in one.

Oh! You just reminded me I need to make a deck with her in it. Ha ha.

One thing I like to use on hackers or people who like to use the Big 3 is Momotaro 6-Koma + Hitsugaya 3-Koma. Momotaro fires a big wave of energy for his special, and when used with Hitsugaya 3-Koma (ice beam freeze attack thing), it makes it quite difficult to get away. Of course, they do sometimes get lucky and find a way out of it, but at least it gives you more of an advantage than you would usually have if you were trying to fight as fair as possible. It works especially well if you're doing 1 vs 1 on someone who's not fighting fair, because people don't get in the way.
