Do you prefer Dragonball or DBZ?

Post by ssjcj » Wed Dec 10, 2008 5:16 pm

As a fan getting into the series I just watched DBZ and only got into Dragonball a few years down the line. I was surprised but I found Dragonball as an anime better. I found that it was funnier, the filler was much better (the run up for the 22nd Tenkaichi Budokai is a particularly good example) and mainly, the fighting was better. For me the fighting was better due to less beam battles and so greater emphasis on hand to hand combat.

I haven't read enough of the manga to form an opinion on that and I can understand people seeing it as a single entity (after all it was meant to be). However, I think that there is a clear enough distinction in the storytelling of Toriyama in the two parts to see them as different from one another.
I was just interested to read people's views on the matter.

Dragon Ball. I don't know if I would have if I watched them the way they should have been, but with Dragon Ball Z, everyone knew about it at the time I was watching it, and between discussions and magazine articles, I basically knew everything that was going to happen. But Dragon Ball (while I knew things here and there) was full of surprises for me. And I guess I enjoyed it more for it.

I've always beet a bigger fan of Dragonball than DBZ. I agree with all of your reasons. I think Dragonball feels more like a story unfolding while DBZ is just a series of fights one after the other. Obviously it is THAT black and White, but I think in comparison, Dragonball has far greater development of story.

Dragonball is obviously Goku's story. But in DBZ it isn't so clear cut. Sure, Goku is the main character but Toriyama also wanted the readers to attach themselves to Gohan. In order to appease Goku fans Toriyama had to keep Goku at the forefront-even if his main growth had already occurred in Dragonball.

I think I prefer DBZ because, not only did it intrduce me to the Dragon World, it also has the most action, and I'm an action nut. ;P

While I do love the all of the Budokais and the Piccolo Daimao arc, that's mostly because the had the most man-on-man sweaty action. I just don't really care for the gag-manga approach which characterised the early Dragon Ball, although I know many regard it as the best part of the saga.

So, I'd have to say Z.

But the 23rd Budokai makes it difficult...

Why isn't GT an option? I'd pick that one. :)

I pick DBZ because that's the one that got me into the whole series to begin with. Although Dragonball does have a lot of good moments too.

I'm all about Dragon Ball. Even though DBZ is more nastalgic and it's the thing that got me into the series, I enjoy watching Dragonball more. I love the fighting in DBZ to death, but the comedy and innocence in Dragonball is what gives me the most satisfaction.

It's such a hard choice. I think Dragon Ball. But I like the Buu saga in DBZ a lot, mainly because it reminds me of Dragon Ball.

I kind of see them as one in the same though. Even though, as you said, there is a clear distinction.

Dragon Ball, purely because of Goku as a child, and the filler is well written, not just characters AAAAAAAAAGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHing all the time.

It's pretty much all the same thing to me. Dragonball is DBZ because they are both one in the same manga-wise. I know "DBZ" is different in being more action-oriented but it still feels like the same place.

DBGT, for me, is so different that it doesn't. So I'll say I love DB/DBZ equally and pretty much don't like GT at all. (a few parts are kinda cool but that's it)

Dragonball starting off is pretty epic, but has a lot of boring bits like the training and the Red Ribbon stuff. While the battles drag on in DBZ, at least it keeps you on your toes constantly, stuff actually happens.

DragonBall.
Had my first exposure to the series been DBZ I would have not become a fan.

I honestly view them as one series. GT is a seperate entity for several reasons, but DragonBall and DragonBall Z are just one large show to me. Sort of like how "Trigun" became "Trigun Maximum" in the manga. Some tonal changes, but the same story.

Same with me, I consider it all as one story. I mean, the whole manga in Japan is just "DragonBall."

I will say I prefer the Piccolo Daimao arc through the end of the Cell Games over any other portion of the series.
Nothing matters (in a cosmic sense.) Have a good time.

Dragon Ball.

Actual fighting without people becoming lines and zipping across the screen. More comedy that's very funny, never could laugh at a lot of jokes and gags in the 'Z' series arcs. Most of all Dragon Ball seemed more like a great adventure. "Z", now after rewatching it awhile ago, was more like it was trying to be an action show. Because of that the 'Z' series lost so much focus IMO.
Be grateful the filler in Dragon Ball doesn't suck like the 3rd arc of Rurouni Kenshin.

I'd say Z. It's what I started with and can tolerate more of the episodes as opposed to a few of DB's arcs (Red Ribbon put me to sleep).

Manga-wise? The Dragonball arcs.

Concerning the anime; Dragonball Z is much more tolerable to watch.
