Custom Covers Project... again

Post by DaemonCorps » Thu Dec 18, 2008 11:40 pm

Hoooly crap, I was completely unaware that the AMV forum was transmogrified into a general Fan-Created Works forum!

Anyways, I just finished making my customs for FUNi's last two season sets (I don't buy 'em myself, but at the least I figured I should try and make more bearable covers for those who did pick 'em up) when I scrolled down the bottom half of the forum menu and noticed this place.

Comments, suggestions, constructive criticism, etc. are much welcome. Also, like the last Custom Covers forum I made a while back, feel free to put up your own DVD Custom Covers. It could also be a useful place to ask for some screencaps and the like for said customs since lurking through the latest FUNi Season DVD Discussion thread might not cut :P.

Also, with FUNi almost done re-releasing DBZ and already moving in on GT, do you think I should go ahead and make customs for those sets, too? And if so, what art should I use for the front cover? It doesn't exactly have a manga version, so there's no new smexy Toriyama Kanzenban cover art to use... maybe I'll just redraw the R2 covers?

Awesome! That's much more fitting than the original cover was. There seems to be a bit of a layer issue on the Season 6 cover with Cell on top of Goku, though--it seems like he was imposed a bit too strongly, and the shading and curves of the character make it look like he was forced too strongly in that particular part of the picture. That's just me being a pedant, though; no such issues exist with the latter cover.

These are very cool, though! Nice work. :)

How are these applied, by the way?

I'm not particularly fond of them, but it's more a matter of personal taste than much else. First of all, I find it odd using manga art for a DVD cover, and I usually disagree with who it is that is slapped on it. The actual template though, based on the Dragon Ball saga sets, is really nice.

I'm gonna have to agree slightly with Mr. Ghost above me. I preferred when SelMod used other art, like from the video games.

Though, how you've used the manga art is nice.
For all the flack that FUNimation gets on this forum for their quote about DBZ, there's some modicum of truth to it: a 9-year-old is born every day. Or in some cases, "reborn". DBZ may be a kids' show, but it's been so close to so many hearts all over Japan, America, and quite possibly, even the world.
Those are very nice. :)

I used to make (draw) my own sleeves to slip into my DBZ DVD's. I actually still like themes I used for the artwork (they're still on my shelf in the basement), even if the art is about 3 years old and God-awful. ^^;

You should go work for Funimation, so they can use these when they release everything again in the next few years.
The Saiyans are very much like the Klingons and Jem'Hadar.

What if Warner Vision International and AB Groupe (and if Toonami survived) released the first part of Z as Series 1 in the United Kingdom.

It was pretty simple and the fonts I used are different from the ones on the actual DVD covers.

I was wondering whether I should put Saiya or Saiyan, but since the blurb on the back of the DVD skips from actual to dub terms I thought I may as well stick it like this.

I'll be doing Series 2: The Namek Saga later, and I'll probably start doing the whole cover, with the spine and the back.

That's actually very neat right there.

I wonder how hard it is to get the rights to making an 'international English dub'.

Were I rich I'd get the rights to make a dub...using TFS. 8)

Wow. Nice job... I guess it would be the FUNi uncut dub with the option for Japanese audio to warrant a 12 rating ( No way in hell the Ocean dub would get that )

In retrospect, I should have done the long sagas as two parters.

And they're meant to be the shitty English cast that did the movies for the UK releases.

And I've considered actually doing a few scenes with the unfitting voices, bad name changes, stupid lines and holding a syllable too long for no reason.

Maybe even a "LET KLIRYN ALONE!" "COME TO ME, MAGICAL DRAGOOOOOON!" and give "Fleezer" as I would have called him, a deep as fuck voice, and Dodoria Gollums voice.

I love how misleading I made the Namek Saga look, like it's all happy family fun when really it's Genocide fun!

Since everyone else is posting theirs, here's an idea I played with for a little while.

Image

I was going for a Daizenshuu kind of layout, with the covers being a panorama that spells Dragonball, anyway the text is just a lazy copy and paste place holder until I decide on a font, and the back will have the usual screencaps, blurbs and whatnot.

Anyway, if anyone is interested I might actually finish it.

I actually like that a lot. It'd be amusing to have those on the same shelf as the Kanzenban ;p
