This never made sense to me. Vegeta signs to Trunks some odd gesture and Trunks seems to know to reply back with the same gesture. This seems to be the only time this gesture shows up, kinda odd, no?
Maybe I' am just looking too deep into it. But it looks a lot like the move Vegeta used to use to finish off little piss ant enemies. Perhaps he's telling Trunks, those Androids are nothing now, destroy them!
Thoughts?

I thought it was just a sort of salute/wave. I've been known to make a similar sort of gesture, but more like a 2 fingered salute from the head, if you know what I mean.

I agree, I guess it's both an attack gesture and a salute/wave. GT Trunks also does it in the GT opening.

<Vegeta> *gesture towards Trunks meaning 'Leave now or I'm going to kill you. Again.'*
<Trunks> *gesture towards Time Machine meaning 'Yeah yeah, I'm leaving. You grumpy old bastard...'*

Goku does it a lot too. I think it's just a little wave goodbye.

Goku does it for Instant Transmission, also. Maybe because he's teleporting away AKA leaving AKA saying goodbye.

If I took, your comment in the wrong manner please forgive me but Kakarrot does it to focus on a particular Ki signature so he can teleport to that person’s location. He explains it when he introduces Shunkan Idou (Instant Transmission), right after Mirai Trunks departs and he had explained to everyone about the future attack by the Artificial Humans.
The Saiyans are very much like the Klingons and Jem'Hadar.

I kinda meant it in an out-of-universe way. Akira Toriyama (speculatively)designed the technique to look like a goodbye gesture, but there's an actual reason he does it in the series, like you said.

Hah, wow, weird.
Me and a friend at work do this a lot, never even thought about a Dragonball reference though, he just did it one day, and I did it back.

Where I come from we use it as saying “hello”, “goodbye”, “I understand” and “I am impressed”. We call it “chunking or throwing up the deuce”.

prehaps its rock paper scissors but closed scissors for saftey and they just keep drawing. One day goku will do it and vegeta will do a a closed fist symbolising rock and say "HA I DID IT I BEAT KAKAROT!"
Or not

Duh. It's Trunks saying bye to his father and Vegeta acknowledging his acceptance and feelings towards Trunks... in a simple gesture. Because that's about as close to getting Vegeta to acknowledge it as you are gonna get. It's actually kind of a touching moment.

Yea... Seems like I was just digging to deeply into it. And I actually never seen anyone do that in real life so, just thought it was exclusive to DragonBall.

Trunks does it in the anime version?! Wow, that totally changes the tone. In the manga, Trunks just smiles. Then we see it's because Vegeta is doing the salute.
The salute is just a two-fingered wave of acknowledgment. It has no special meaning.

It's just a little wave/salute thingy. I do it myself fairly often.

That is the coolest and best explanation that I think anyone could ever come up with. I will forever use it, even when people don't ask me a question about the gesture itself... or even a question about Dragonball. That simple explanation just seems poetic to me... and is probably the coolest thing I've read here all year (2009).

Me and some of my friends acknowledge one another by throwing Kamehameha and various other Ki attacks at one another...but I suppose the two finger salute is cool too. I just took it for a Japanese culture sort of thing.
