I found some ideas for a Dragon Ball game...

Post by Dr. Casey » Sat Feb 14, 2009 6:42 pm

... I wrote several years ago. It's a Notepad file describing a Dragon Ball Action RPG of sorts. It's from February 2004, so I was 16 at the time (August 1st 1987).

Dragon Ball Boss Guide

~The Search for the Dragon Balls~

Goku Number One
Hit Points: 50
Attack: 21
Defense: 19
Speed: 18
Power level: 20
Ki: 10 (the Kamehameha uses all ten points)

Goku at the start of the game is rather limited. He has only two commands in his pre-Boss Rabbit battle; you can jump with X (this stays the same throughout the game) and punch with the circle button (this also remains the same). He can't block or change his speed like he can after training with Master Roshi, so the L1, L2, R1, and R2 buttons won't be used. This fits in with the story, AND it lets you get used to the battle system since things are so simple. After Fire Mountain, Goku learns the Kamehameha, in sync with the story, and you charge it up with the Square button. Of course, it won't be usable on a lot of enemies... but we'll get to that later.

Boss one: Pterodactyl
Hit Points: 30
Attack: 8
Defense: 2
Speed: 11
Power level: 8
Ki: 0
Rating: Very Easy

This dino is far inferior to Goku in every area (except ki, which they're equally inept in). The dinosaur's attacks do one hit point of damage for every hit, although Goku is so much quicker that you shouldn't be hit. Each of Goku's attacks will do sixteen damage, so he should go down in less than ten seconds.

Boss two: Bear Thief
Hit Points: 75
Attack: 20
Defense: 5
Speed: 6
Power level: 8
Ki: 0
Rating: Easy

The Bear Thief is actually just as powerful as the pterodactyl; however, he has the obvious advantage of having a SWORD. As evidenced by the manga and the TV series, Goku is far quicker than the thief, and you can jump over his sword strokes with ease. Don't get too confident, though - if you DO get hit you'll lose 17 hit points, so three hits will wipe you out. Each attack of yours will do ten points of damage, so it will take eight hits to defeat him. However, you CAN defeat him in one - jump on the tip of the sword and you will be sprung up. Punch the thief in the face to do 100 hit points of damage. :)

Boss three: Master Roshi
Hit Points: ???
Attack: ??? (he never attacks - he doesn't want to kill poor Goku!)
Defense: 250
Speed: 215
Power level: 139
Ki: 60 (he will not use the Kamehameha, of course.)
Rating: Impossible
Hey, TOEI can add filler, so I can, too. Anyway, Master Roshi won't attack in this battle as he's just testing out your technique. He's far stronger and faster than Son Goku. This is the first boss to actually block - oh, and he WILL block a lot. He's strong enough to defend against your attacks and take absolutely no damage, and he's fast enough, too - if, by some miracle you manage to hit him, you still won't hurt him. After one minute the training session will end.

Boss four: Yamucha
Hit Points: 200
Attack: 17
Defense: 15
Speed: 16 (Wolf Fang Fist boosts it to 35)
Power level: 18
Ki: 6 (however, these ki points aren't put to use)
Rating: Hard

Yamcha's a worthy challenge for Goku - in fact, he's really, really hard. He's not as strong as the bear was with his sword, but he's more than twice as sturdy and speedy. Yamcha doesn't fight very well in this battle - he blocks ocassionally, but for the most part you will get free hits. These hits only do about six hit points of damage, though... Yamcha's a tank. His attacks will will do thirteen damage per hit, so be careful. You're quicker than Yamcha, but not by much - you can dodge him all the time, but you'll have to pay attention and actually try. Also, you can attack Puar... XD However, this pisses Yamcha off and doubles all of his stats (except HP), and he'll use the Wolf Fang Fist... so... it isn't recommended.

Boss five: Yamucha
Hit Points: 120
Attack: 16
Defense: 14
Speed: 15
Power level: 16
Ki: 6
Rating: Medium

Yamcha's still sore from the battle the other day and thus his attack, speed, HP, and defense have decreased. However, he has two advantages. He knows Goku's battle style now, and he'll block your attacks almost every time. These still do three hp of damage, and any attacks that go past him will do ten damage. Also, he now uses the Wolf Fang Fist. Disregard that 15 - when he uses the WFF, his speed is boosted to 45. He'll hit Goku over and over for five damage, and will kill him if you don't get away. Overall, however, he's easier than he was the first time.

Boss six: Boss Rabbit
Hit points: 50
Attack: ???
Defense: 7
Speed: 60
Power level: 4
Ki: 0
Rating: Hard

Look at those pathetic stats... how can he possibly be hard? Simple - his fighting style... isn't very orthodox. The entire town is your arena, and Boss Rabbit will pop out from everywhere... he'll jump out of windows, pop up suddenly out of manholes, and be gone just like that. Sometimes he'll run away, sometimes he'll go after you. Don't let him touch you - you will be turned into a carrot, and then it's game over. Don't kill his two lackies - they can be used to be your advantage. Step in front of one - you will be shot, but each bullet does a single point of damage - and Boss Rabbit will skid to a halt so that he doesn't carrotize his comrade. Now hit him with the Power Pole, which Goku is equipped with for this battle, causing 80 hp of damage. This is also the first fight in which you can use the Kamehameha, which will KILL Boss Rabbit. Bulma will come back because Oolong wishes for her instead of panties - however, things will change drastically. Yamcha will fall in love with Launch in the three years between the 21st and 22nd Budokais, and will marry between the 22nd and 23rd. Yamcha will settle down and will not participate in the 23rd Tournament. Chaozu takes Yamcha's place and makes it past the Preliminaries, fighting Kami in Round One. Also, the location of everyone will remain a mystery to Bulma, so she won't be around during the 21st Budokai, so of course Goku loses the fight against Jackie Chun quicker, meaning that the moon sticks around, meaning that Jackie Chun will fight a new opponent in the first round of the 22nd Budokai. Bulma will find Goku (via a new Dragon Radar) at a bad time - whenever Goku is fighting Mercenary Tao for the first time. Eep. And all this thanks to an extremely unimportant character. ^_^ Wow, that emoticon looks weird in this font.

Boss seven: Kuririn
Hit Points: 276
Attack: 21
Defense: 19
Speed: 18
Power level: 20
Ki: 0
Rating: Hard

Ahh, good ol' Krillin. Even though it's kind of inaccurate with the show, I've taken a few liberties thanks to my bias. :) Krillin is dead even with Goku, making him a rather hard boss. The good news - it isn't necessary to win this fight, and the only thing losing will change is a bit of dialogue following the fight. A Kamehameha will do 150 hit points of damage - however, Krillin has heard of the legendary attack and will attack Goku whenever he starts chanting it, so it's unlikely that you'll pull it off. Krillin is unfamiliar with Goku's style, so he'll practically never block. If you don't think Krillin got enough fame in the series, feel free to let him beat the great Son Goku. :D

Whenever you gain control of Goku once again, it will be at the 21st Tenkaichi Budokai, and eight months have passed. As you likely know, he's been training under Master Roshi, and he's far stronger than he was before. Say hello to the new Goku.

Goku Number Two
Hit Points: 300
Attack: 200
Defense: 250
Speed: 30/215
Power level: 130
Ki: 80 (Eight Kamehamehas... nice.)

Around ten times more powerful in all stats... nice. However, this would be a good time to mention that the stats are kind of just for show. If you fought the bear thief, for instance, you'd kill him in one hit. If 23rd Budokai fought the Bear Thief, he'd be even deader. However, your opponents are much stronger too, so the attack and defense cancel out to a degree. Also, about the speed... 215 is the max; however, you can't be zipping around the battlefield with no control, so a new technique is implemented - speed raising. Press R1 to raise your speed by ten points; press L1 to lower it by ten points. In every single Preliminary match it's STRONGLY suggested you stick to your base speed of 30; at 215 it would be extremely hard not to run out of the little ring. 30 is more than enough. The major fights use a bigger arena, so you can get up to around 70 or 80 and stay in easily. 120 is pushing it, but you can stay in if you're good enough. Your opponents will use their higher speeds sparingly, so you don't have to use it very often. It should only be used temporarily to keep up when they DO use it. In real battles, of course, opponents will always use their max speed (all your opponents so far haven't held back).

Also, Goku can block now - it's no longer an enemy only trick. Block with your left hand by pushing L2, and block with your right with R2. Blocking reduces damage by 90%. The Triangle button will remain functionless for quite some time.

Controlling this new Goku is obviously much more complicated, and the battles will get a lot more complex as well. Good luck.

~The 21st Tenkaichi Budokai~

Goku is not the only character you can control. In this Budokai you can choose to control Yamcha and Krillin. They are basically weaker versions of Goku without the Kamehameha.

Krillin Number One
Hit Points: 180
Attack: 110
Defense: 140
Speed: 10/80
Power level: 75
Ki: 0 (he has no special attacks to speak of at this point)

Yamcha Number One
Hit Points: 100 (now that he's a member of the gang, he has way less HP. Don't blame me... it's RPG rules. =P)
Attack: 64
Defense: 45
Speed: 20/120
Power level: 50
Ki: 25 (Wolf Fang Fist still costs one point)

Before every battle involving Krillin and Yamcha (excluding Goku vs. Krillin, where you must choose one of the two fighters), you can either choose to be a spectator or actually control the fights. The Preliminary rounds are incredibly easy, but almost every major fight is horribly stacked against you. However, if you die, you won't get Game Over - the losses weren't enough to end the show, so they'll continue the canon way - and you can win (if you're very good) and change the storyline a lot. This is, of course, just for fun and to give some of the overlooked characters for glory. :) There can actually be different winners for the Budokai.

Anyway...

The preliminary bouts are impossible to lose. Even if you get hit, none of the big three will take any damage. Even Yamcha will take them out in one hit. I'm making an invisible boundary around the mini-arenas because I'm lazy. Now then, off to the main fights!

Boss 8c/9/10: Giran
Hit Points: 850
Attack: 86
Defense: 71
Speed: 68
Power level: 40
Ki: 0
Rating: Easy

Now it's time to really put Goku to the test! Umm... kinda. Giran is far more powerful than any boss you've faced... if you had fought him at the start of the game, you'd have been owned. Of course, you trained with Roshi. ^_^ So go ahead and kick his ass. If he hits you, you'll take five hit points of damage; block 'em and you'll take none. He also has a tail sweep which you can just jump over. All of your attacks will do 52 hit points of damage. He'll try to block you, but he can't very well, given that he's so slow. After he takes 500 damage (or 520, actually) he'll use his Merry-Go-Round Gum and throw Goku out of the arena.

After this, a cutscene. Things go the way they should - Goku uses the Nimbus to fly back, he grows his tail back, and breaks the MGRG; an inane minigame is thrown in, though.

Minigame: Pterodactyl Smacking

Flying back to the Budokai on his Nimbus, Goku will use his Power Pole to smack all the dinos who are attacking him for no apparent reason. Yup. It's retarded, but it should be fun, as well as a nice change of pace.

Anyway, after Goku breaks free, fight Giran and take out the remaining 330 hit points. It shouldn't be hard at all.

Boss 8b/9 - Jackie Chun
Hit Points: 1000
Attack: 200
Defense: 250
Speed: 215
Power level: 139
Ki: 60 (he will not use the Kamehameha in this battle, either.)
Rating: Nearly Impossible

You can choose to skip over this scene if you wish. If you want to play, however, it's advisable not to go in with hopes of winning. This fight is just as one-sided as it was in the actual series. Master Roshi will, thankfully, not use his max speed; he'll only go up to 60. You can go up to 60, too, but you'll skid quite a bit, wheras Roshi turns on a dime. Still, it might be your only chance. Each of Yamcha's attacks will do seven hit points of damage - assuming they aren't blocked. Master Roshi blocks many of Yamcha's attacks, causing them to do absolutely no damage. Yamcha's Wolf Fang Fist is useless; each hit causes one hit point of damage, but as fast as Roshi is, he'll slip away after three or four hits. If Roshi hits you, bam. You've lost. -160 HP, and Yamcha only has 100. It'll take a miracle to win this fight, but it is possible.

Boss 8a) Bacterian
Hit Points: 130
Attack: 30
Defense: 10
Speed: 28
Ki: 0
Power level: 15
Rating: Really, Really Easy

At first, if you try to get near Bacterian, Krillin will run away disgusted. Eventually, though, Gokuu will remind Krillin of the fact that he can't smell. After that, just hit the guy once.

And yeah, I know those were in reverse order. =/ I messed up. Anyway.

Boss 9/10/11a - Krillin/Yamcha

If Yamcha beat Chun, then this is the match you'll have. The stats are exactly the same as it is when you control them. For this fight, you can choose either Yamcha or Krillin. If you choose Krillin, you have a very easy match. If you choose Yamcha... well... it shouldn't be *too* hard.

Boss 9/10/11b - Jackie Chun
Rating: Very Hard

You have better chances than Yamcha did, but it's still an extremely hard battle. Chun can take Krillin down in three hits, and Krillin inflicts 14 damage with each hit. Just sweat it out and dodge and attack as well as you can.

Boss 9/10/11/12 - Namu
Hit Points: 910
Attack: 150
Defense: 160
Speed: 50/180
Power level: 97
Ki: 15 (Aerial Attack uses five points)
Rating: Medium

Namu proves to be a better challenge than Giran. Namu's attacks will do damage even if you block, although the damage is very minor (1 hp). If you don't block, say bye to twenty-four of your hp. You'll do 33 damage with each hit; the Kamehameha could do a lot, but you will never hit him with it. He knows of the attack, and if you start charging up he'll take that as an opportunity to do the Aerial Attack. If you're hit with this, you're screwed. You'll take 180 damage and be paralyzed for nine seconds - Namu could easily take out the remaining 120 hp in that time. He's not much of a blocker, so no worries about that.

Boss 10/11/12/13a - Goku
Rating: Hard or Very Easy

You can choose either Goku or Yamcha/Krillin, depending on who won. Goku is just Roshi with three times less hp, so if you beat Roshi, you can beat Goku. And of course, if you choose Goku... you'll have a VERY easy time.

Boss 10/11/12/13a - Jackie Chun
Rating: Impossible or Hard

The main event of the 21st Tenkaichi Budokai... it's Son Goku's greatest battle ever as he faces his master! (Ooh, dramatic.) This battle introduces ki duels.

Whenever you start charging up the Kamehameha, Jackie Chun will start preparing his own. You'll finish charging up on your own; whenever you're both done, you fire Kamehamehas. Here, you press Square rapidly to try and push it back. If you succeed, 400 hit points are taken away from Jackie.

This battle is impossible to win if Bulma isn't here. After losing half of his points, Roshi will do the sleeping attack. If Bulma isn't around (see Boss Rabbit fight), Goku will not wake up and Roshi will win. If she is... well... you can't control Oozaru Goku, so I think I've described everything I need to about this fight.

Hm, that was pretty complicated, wasn't it?

~Red Ribbon Army Saga~

No character swapping this time around (well, except for once). The Red Ribbon Army Saga is all about Goku. This is going to be pretty hard to do, actually... Goku wins most of the fights very easily.

-----------------------

This game actually doesn't sound half bad. Does anyone else agree that this would be the most hardcore Dragon Ball game ever?

That sounds like it could be pretty good as long as the gameplay in between the fights such as exploration is decent since it is an RPG.
