If Masako Nozawa ever needed to be replaced...

Post by Kingdom Heartless » Sat Feb 14, 2009 9:37 pm

...would you want her replacement to try and imitate her, or make the role their own?

No. But then again, how else could Goku be played? I'm torn.

Make the role they're own; VAs who attempt to imitate just end up blowing chunks.

I nominate Rica Matsumoto if anything were to happen to Nozawa.

I'd add "God forbid" at the end of that, but imaginary people don't forbid things. So let's go with... "hopefully it won't come to that anytime soon."

We don't need another "Brian Sabat" ordeal on our hands. I'd just like the new VA to try his or her best and to try and carry on the legacy as best as they can with their own idea of a suiting voice.

Heaven forbid that should happen, but if it were to, I just want the VA to craft their own style into the character (coming from the Pokemon fandom), because they can't replace the original.

The only person I could possibly see taking over, like B said, is Rica Matsumoto.

Personally hope they don't do anything. Just let the series be if Nozawa is not around.

I agree. People act like their gonna make a new show or something.
I completely respect your opinion, and I respect you. I enjoyed discussing this with you, even if I don't completely agree.

Ok, to be blunt, when Nozawa officially retires or decides to leave acting I would like for her to maybe pick a successor. My wish would be she does that before she passes away.

I didn't mean for that, but there will always be stuff that requires Goku's voice coming.

The day Nozawa retires is the day Son Goku truly dies.

Like Mike mentioned on an old podcast, when Masako Nozawa dies, pretty much the only things being released using Goku's voice will be video games, and I'm sure that most of the sound bites needed for that could probably be taken from her previous works. This could also (to some extent) work for commercials, which seem to be the other common use for her Son Goku voice these days (with the recent exception of the new re-airing of the TV series).

But if a case comes up where an original quote said in Son Goku's voice is needed, for something small (I'm talking after the re-airing of the TV series is over), I would prefer a new seiyuu to attempt a decent imitation of the original. I know that it will not be exact, but it will at least have a tiny sense of familiarity behind it.

Ms. Nozawa doesn't happen to have any close relatives who are also seiyuu, does she? (On the longshot of "If she has a daughter, niece, younger sister, etc", I could see someone like that taking over for her.)
On hiatus.

I would like for her to choose a replacement, if she retired, but there isn't any evidence of her ever slowing down in what she does. I get the feeling that Nozawa will act until the day she dies. If that is so, like Casual Matt said, I think that would be the end of Dragonball, animation of Goku at the least.
Now she is 72 and still going strong. She doing work all over the acting board and she is chairman of her own office "Office Nozawa." She is still working, and signs of any bugs or anything. We should all think about this concept of Nozawa leaving the seiyu/acting world and what the next logical step would be in respect to her franchises, but still appreciate that she is still here with us and we should all enjoy that.
