How Cell dies.
How Cell dies.
Did Goku transfer his energy to Gohan to give him the power to out-Kamehameha Cell, or was Goku's image behind Gohan some sort of metaphor of how Goku's always there for Gohan when he's in danger, even after death?
Was it that Cell was just outdone in strength, or was it the cliche "IF I WANT TO DEFEAT YOU BADLY ENOUGH, I WILL!"?

I don't think Goku actually physically helped Gohan. Goku was confident that his son had more than enough power to finish Cell, and just needed to let it out.
And let's not forget that Gohan was having immense trouble, even with that image of Goku behind him, until Vegeta jumped in and distracted Cell.

Yeah, it is a horrid misunderstanding. Goku just gives him the "Do it you whiny little *censored for the sake of the innocence of young'uns everywhere*" pep-talk that silly children like Gohan need.
And personally, I'd go with the silly "IF I TRY HARD ENOUGH YOU'RE SCREWED" reasoning as for why Cell got pwned.

I dislike you intensely.(probably)
Goku knew Gohan was still holding back, trying not to damage the planet. When Vegeta distracted Cell, Gohan (with Goku's advice) used that opportunity to put his full power into the kamehameha. What I find impressive is that even after Cell's zenkai, Gohan, with one arm and apparently 'only half his ki left' as he put it, still had enough he wasn't letting out to completely overpower Cell.
So yeah, it was symbolic, like when the Oozaru appeared in the background when Goku finished off Piccolo Daimao (although in that case I think it was representing his hidden power coming out more explicitly). I'm surprised anyone ever thought Father-Son Kamehameha was anything more than that; we're told again and again that it was Gohan's power that finished Cell off, not Gohan and Goku's.
