While illustrating Dragon Ball and other series, Akira Toriyama occasionally calls back to his previous great work, Dr. Slump. These call-backs include major crossovers in the Dragon Ball manga in chapters 70 through 73, the Dragon Ball anime episodes XX through XXX, and Dragon Ball Super episodes 43 and 69.

While distracting Broli on New Planet Vegeta, the Turtle Hermit performs a comedic dance using a traditional Hyottoko mask to shift between alterations of his facial features. At one point, he briefly contorts his face to resemble Arale.
