Dragon Ball Z: Broly - The Legendary Super Saiyan is FUNimation's title for the eighth Dragon Ball Z film, originally released in Japan in 1993. FUNimation's release of this film began in 2003 with an uncut dub-only VHS, an edited dub-only VHS, an edited dub-only DVD, and an uncut bilingual (English/Japanese) DVD.
The DVD is notable for its bonus material, which includes a behind-the-scenes look at development on the Nintendo Game Boy Advance video game Dragon Ball Z: The Legacy of Goku II.
Content

The following plot summary is given on the back of the printed sleeve:
A Saiyan warrior has arrived on Earth. His name is Paragus and he seeks the rightful ruler of the Saiyans, Vegeta! Confessing his loyalty to his new king, Paragus pleads with the powerful warrior to vanquish a rampaging Super Saiyan who is threatening to destroy the entire galaxy!
But when Kiaoh [sic] learns of the Super Saiyan threat he begs Goku to rush to the scene of the action to take care of the problem himself. Sparks will fly as Goku and Vegeta clash over who is to be the one to confront the galaxy's new menace.
However, the mysterious Paragus is not what we seems. What information does he have about Goku and Vegeta's past? With Paragus's volatile son Broly on the scene, the Saiyan power struggle reaches new levels of excitement and danger. Broly has his own agenda, and his target is the most powerful Saiyan in the Universe! But will it be Goku or Vegeta?!
The release's primary content is the the eighth theatrical Dragon Ball Z film, which is presented in its original 4:3 fullscreen production aspect ratio. The video stream is encoded as interlaced (480i), with black side borders of approximately 7 pixels on the left and 4 on the right.
The film was released both edited and uncut in an English-dub-only format on VHS, and is presented with three audio tracks on DVD:
- 5.1 surround sound English dub (FUNimation/Texas-based cast) with a replacement musical score (music and songs by Mark Menza, Bruce Faulconer, and additional licensed tracks)
- 2.0 stereo sound English dub (FUNimation/Texas-based cast) with a replacement musical score (music and songs by Mark Menza, Bruce Faulconer, and additional licensed tracks)
- 1.0 mono (actually duplicated mono sound across a standard stereo signal) with original Japanese voices and music (score by Shunsuke Kikuchi)
Two subtitle tracks are included for the film on DVD:
- An English-language closed captions / "dubtitle" track (transcription of the English dub)
- An English-language subtitle track translating the original Japanese dialog (translation by Steven J. Simmons)
This 2003 release is notable for the spelling of "Broli" on its subtitle track corresponding to the original Japanese language. While Steven J. Simmons' translations were traditionally not beholden to name changes and spellings exclusive to FUNimation's English dub, said English reversioning's spelling of "Broly" was featured beginning with 2009 re-releases of the film.
The English dub as presented on this 2003 release serves as the basis for future re-releases from FUNimation, including a 2006 "Triple Threat" box set, a 2009 "Double Feature" steelbook release (on both DVD and Blu-ray, which includes the English dub with the original Japanese music as an optional audio track), as well as a limited theatrical run in 2018 (which solely featured the original Japanese music).
