Color chapter guide

Post by Herms » Tue Aug 05, 2008 1:12 pm

----Notice:This old thread is part of my series of guides. To avoid necro-posting, please post any comments you have in the sticky thread for my guides, rather than here. Thanks!----

This was inspired by a question Raki had for me yesterday, and by that damn cup of green tea that kept me up all last night. Anyway, now that the kanzenban have been out for a few years and the VIZBIG are coming out, it’s getting relatively easy to find the color manga chapters in actual color (the way they were meant to be seen!). So I figured I’d make a guide to which chapters are in color and where they can be found.

First, a few things about color chapters: while the vast majority of the DragonBall manga was drawn in black and white, some chapters were done in color. This was much more common when the series was starting out, and color chapters grew fewer and farther between as the series progressed. Of these color chapters, the vast majority of them start out with two to four pages in a full color palette, then switch to a limited palette for the rest of the chapter. So for instance, in full color palette pages, Goku wears orange and Piccolo is green, but in the limited palette pages Goku wears red and Piccolo is gray. These color substitutions vary from really stupid-looking to really cool-looking (in my opinion at least). There are only two chapters done entirely in a full color palette: 81 and 205. There are also some color chapters that are partially in color (usually only a limited palette), then switch to simple black and white. This is fairly common at first, but becomes rare.

Now here’s a list of each kanzenban volume, how many total color manga chapters they have, and which ones they are. So if you’re thinking of buying a few kanzenban, you can use this to see which ones will give you the most color for your money. Note that some of the chapters are not completely in color, especially in the earlier volumes. To see which ones, check out the individual chapter index at the end.

Kanzenban 1: Five (1, 2, 3, 4, 5)
Kanzenban 2: Two (19, 25)
Kanzenban 3: Three (33, 40, 44)
Kanzenban 4: Four (45, 48, 55, 57)
Kanzenban 5: Two (62, 70)
Kanzenban 6: Three (75, 81, 86)
Kanzenban 7: One (93)
Kanzenban 8: Two (106, 110)
Kanzenban 9: Two (121, 130)
Kanzenban 10: One (149)
Kanzenban 11: Two (155, 163)
Kanzenban 12: One (178)
Kanzenban 13: One (187)
Kanzenban 14: Two (196, 205)
Kanzenban 15: None
Kanzenban 16: Three (228, 229, 236)
Kanzenban 17: One (247)
Kanzenban 18: Two (255, 256)
Kanzenban 19: One (272)
Kanzenban 20: One (287)
Kanzenban 21: One (305)
Kanzenban 22: One (323)
Kanzenban 23: One (337)
Kanzenban 24: One (354)
Kanzenban 25: One (371)
Kanzenban 26: One (386)
Kanzenban 27: One (404)
Kanzenban 28: One (411)
Kanzenban 29: None
Kanzenban 30: One (452)
Kanzenban 31: None
Kanzenban 32: One (482)
Kanzenban 33: One (501)
Kanzenban 34: Three (512, 519, Trunks side-story)

Now here’s my speculation on what each VIZBIG volume will contain which GN volumes. For DragonBall, I’m unsure how they’ll divide it up for the last volumes. I think they’ll either have an extra big volume 5 or split it up into two smaller than usual volumes 5 and 6.
DB VIZBIG 1: GN 1, 2, 3
DB VIZBIG 2: GN 4, 5, 6
DB VIZBIG 3: GN 7, 8, 9
DB VIZBIG 4: GN 10, 11, 12
DB VIZBIG 5 (?): GN 13, 14, 15, 16
DB VIZBIG 6 (?): GN 15, 16

For DragonBall Z, I’m fairly sure that they’ll just have only two GNs in the last volume, because the last two GNs are extra big anyway. But I could turn out wrong.
DBZ VIZBIG 1: GN 1, 2, 3
DBZ VIZBIG 2: GN 4, 5, 6
DBZ VIZBIG 3: GN 7, 8, 9
DBZ VIZBIG 4: GN 10, 11, 12
DBZ VIZBIG 5: GN 13, 14, 15
DBZ VIZBIG 6: GN 16, 17, 18
DBZ VIZBIG 7: GN 19, 20, 21
DBZ VIZBIG 8: GN 22, 23, 24
DBZ VIZBIG 9: GN 25, 26

With that done, I can now figure out the number of color chapters that will be in each volume, and which ones they will be. So far for VIZBIG they’ve printed a lot of the color pages in gray scale, which is too bad. But I figure that VIZBIG volumes with a smaller number of color pages will have a greater chance of having all of them in actual color, and we can use this chart to make predictions. For Z-era chapters, I’ll use Viz’s DragonBall Z chapter numbers rather than the original ones.
DB VIZBIG 1: Eight (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 19, 25, 33)
DB VIZBIG 2: Eight (40, 44, 45, 48, 55, 57, 62, 70)
DB VIZBIG 3: Five (75, 81, 86, 93, 106)
DB VIZBIG 4: Three (110, 121, 130)
DB VIZBIG 5 (?): Five (149, 155, 163, 178, 187)
DB VIZBIG 6 (?): Two (178, 187)

DBZ VIZBIG 1: Three (DBZ 2, 11, 34)
DBZ VIZBIG 2: Five (DBZ 35, 42, 53, 61, 62)
DBZ VIZBIG 3: Two (DBZ 78, 93)
DBZ VIZBIG 4: Three (DBZ 111, 129, 143)
DBZ VIZBIG 5: Two (DBZ 160, 177)
DBZ VIZBIG 6: Three (DBZ 192, 210, Trunks side-story)
DBZ VIZBIG 7: One (DBZ 217)
DBZ VIZBIG 8: Two (DBZ 258, 288)
DBZ VIZBIG 9: Three (DBZ 307, 318, 325)

Now here’s a summary of each color chapter, giving which kanzenban it’s in and which VIZBIG it should be in. This way, if you’re planning on buying some kanzenban or VIZBIG, you can see which scenes are in color and where they can be found. I’ve noted which color chapters switch to black and white midway through, and for those that are already out in VIZBIG I’ll note which ones are printed in gray scale. For Z-era chapters I’ll give both their original chapter number and their DBZ one.

Great guide Herms, it was a great read!

There is one thing that I was wondering: how do the full color palette colored pages in the first few chapters of Dragonball compare to the full color palette colored pages in the last few chapters of Dragonball (Kanzenban volume 34)?

Also, what color chapter do you think is the best, in both artwork and how well deserved the coloring was for that chapter?

But I can't, that's how life is. Time is a bitch. The party is over. Kageyama, Kikuchi, and Maeda are off the sauce now; Yanami almost OD'd; Yamamoto got arrested; Toriyama's not going to light trash cans on fire and hang from the chandelier anymore. We can't get the band back together, and even if we could, everyone's either old, in poor health, or calmed way the fuck down. Best we're going to get, and are getting, is a party that's almost entirely devoid of the magic that made the original one so awesome that we even want more.

My Rurouni Kenshin Vizbig volumes (I have 1 and 2, but need to get 3) have some color pages, but I heard they don't have all the color pages, strangely enough. Still, its a good value, and the RK volumes seem uncensored.

The Dragonball and Dragonball Z VIZBIG editions do indeed have color chapters, unfortunately it is only a few.

For Dragonball, the color chapters are : 1, 2 and 19

For Dragonball Z, the color chapters are : 2 and 11.

It's sad to see that the orignally colored Vegeta fight, is in grayscale, but I'm happy with my purchase.

Wow. Yeah, no more VIZBIG editions for me. If I get told there's gonna be color chapters included, I expect ALL of it, and ESPECIALLY not for important, notable color chapters like Goku vs Vegeta to be the ones omitted. I'll see if the upcoming Collector's Editions retain it like they're supposed to. I flipped through the Bleach one in the store today, and it looked pretty nice, although the paper quality was nowhere near as good as the VIZBIG material. :/

Geez, VIZ, make up your minds already.

The early full color pages seem to have softer colors and a wider variety of colors compared to the later ones. I think overall they get...I don't want to say "worse", but it seems Toriyama puts less work into them. That only applies to the actual color story pages though. The color title pages seem to get more detailed as the series goes on. The limited palette pages also seem to get better as the series goes on, with more detail in how the color is applied.
Also, what color chapter do you think is the best, in both artwork and how well deserved the coloring was for that chapter?
I don't think I could page a single best, so here's my top seven:

Chapter 155 (Goku battles Piccolo Daimao): The beginning of one of my favorite fights. Piccolo looks really bad-ass in gray in this chapter.

Chapters 228 and 229 (Goku and Vegeta fight): Not one of my favorite battles, but I know lots of people like it, and the color artwork is done very well. One of the few instances of back-to-back color chapters.

Chapter 305 (Final-form Freeza beats everyone): I love both final-form Freeza and scenes where one guy outclasses a bunch of people, so I like this chapter. The use of red in this chapter is really great. In the limited palette parts, there are several panels with Freeza, red-eyed and his usually purple segments jet black, stands against a vivid red background. Those are some of my all-time favorite panels.

Chapter 323 (SSJ Goku vs. Freeza): In the full color parts, Goku and Freeza's beam struggle looks amazing. For the limited palette parts, SSJ Goku looks really cool with white hair and red eyes, and Freeza looks good in gray and black.

Chapter 354 (androids beat everyone): I think the action in this chapter is outstanding, and the full color panels where No.18 blocks Trunks' sword looks amazing.

Chapter 404 (Gohan begins to fight Cell): The title page that shows Gohan's development over the series is one of my favorites. Cell looks good in gray, and the coloring on SSJ Gohan's hair is very well detailed.

Chapter 519 (final chapter): The title page and the image of Goku and Bulma's first meeting are very well done. Aside from those everything is in a limited palette, but there seems to be a lot of care and detail in how the color is applied. Particularly, I think the skin in this chapter looks very good for some reason. In the kanzenban, you get Toriyama's new pages, and they look good, plus it's always nice to see his newer work.

Kinda funny that the DB VizBig doesn't keep all their color ones, but Kenshin's VizBig's do, and fix some typos the smaller versions had. Though it's still weird seeing Misao's outfit colored differently than it was in the anime.

Man, if you only you made this guide back when I was hunting down kanzenban volumes for the purpose of getting some of the better color chapters. I didn't exactly know which color chapters were "better" than others, so I went with the idea that the darker and harsher on the eyes the grayscale version of the chapter was, the better the color chapter would really be. With that in mind, one of the first kanzenban I picked up was the one when SSJ Goku fires off his kamehameha against Freeza .

Maybe VIZ didn't get all the colored chapters or something. Were all the colored chapters printed in the SJ magazine when DBZ was in it?

I remember that DBZ 143 was printed in color (and advertised as "DBZ in color for the first time outside of Japan!"), and I think the full color pages in DBZ 160 were in color, but the rest was in the greyscale. And they had the (censored) cover to DBZ 171 in color, the one with everyone flipping the bird, but I don't remember what they did with the rest of the chapter.

Viz knows of the existence of the Dragonball Kanzenban, and they are pratically owned by Shueisha. So them not getting material for a big release is just nonsense. They are saving that material for another release.
The series doesn't start with the arrival of Raditz. Stop being lazy and watch Dragonball.

I really think/hope that that release will be the Dragonball mnga "Collectors Editions".

I doubt it. The edition you named probably will be just another gimmick to get people to think they are buying something special. Why would they have the Kanzenban be the Collector's Edition when they can sell it alone and still make more money?

And aas I posted, Kenshin's getting its colored pages, while DB and DBZ isn't for some reason. Then again, some of those Kenshin ones have pages that make more sense colored like what was with Shuu's "KIIIN".

It says that it will have colored pages, rated "T" and is hard cover, so there is a good chance that it will be like the Kanzenban, or at least an unedited version. But your right, even though that is how it sounds we know that there is a good chance that it will be nothing more than a re-release of what they've already released.

I flipped through the Bleach "Collector's Edition" Volume One the other day (only one that's out so far, I'm pretty sure), and it looked okay. Decent paper quality (not MUCH better than the regular volumes, maybe not any different), color pages, hardcover, etc... It was all there.

But the question is, whether or not they'll continue on through the entire series, or if it's a one-shot thing for each of them, only doing the first volume. I haven't seen any "Vol 2"s listed anywhere... yet.
