Re: Does anyone else feel that much of the DB fandom enforces low standards?

I would say it's obvious Super will go past the End of Z eventually. Uub was mentioned during the ToP arc, and the writers are not stupid, they don't do things randomly. If Uub of all people is mentioned in the middle of a completely unrelated arc, then it's clear the writers are setting something ...

I imagine they mean the anime adaptation.

Re: Dragon Ball Rewatch, Week 36 - DBZ movie 1 (CURRENT WEEK)

I"ve said this before on the forums, but what I love most about movie 1 (outside of the fantastic visuals) is that it really feels like an alternate version of Dragon Ball Z in which Goku is still just an (incredibly strong) earthling and retains more of the chinese mythology that Z pretty much disc...

Re: My apologies, Toyotaro

It's also the moment in which Super (the manga) really tries to reckon with one of Dragon Ball's biggest fucking problem: the power creep. I loved that moment that actually allows Roshi to go "yeah Goku is beast--but don't forget who taught him." I don't agree with this. The manga manages to build ...

Re: Does English Dragon Ball need higher profile actors?

Nah. If the Ghibli english dubs prove anything, it's that successful actors talents do not always translate into voice acting. It is a different beast altogether. With the exception of Spirited Away, most of the Ghibli Dubs are mediocre.

Re: DB is not better than DBZ

The Dragon Boxes for Z were aimed at the hardcore fandom. Which tend to be the same people who do watch Dragon Ball so I don’t know if it would sell that much worse. But the Dragon Boxes were limited editions that were never supposed to make bank. So I don't think that's a great comparison. As far ...

Re: Does anyone else feel that much of the DB fandom enforces low standards?

So mocking bad writing and dumb fans is sexist now smh? When it's predominantly high school girls that are the focus of the original punch-down? Yeah. When the term is now predominantly only applied to female characters now? Yeah. Hate to break it to you Peter but women can be shitty towards women,...

Re: Does anyone else feel that much of the DB fandom enforces low standards?

Oh yes it is. Check out Chapter 173 on Kanzenshuu. https://www.kanzenshuu.com/manga/chp-173/ I had no idea it was official, much less from Toriyama himself. I'd love to get something like that. I have that nifty DB cover art collection, and there are plenty of neat costumes that Toriyama puts Goku ...

Re: DB is not better than DBZ

And you know that how? You say that with such authority as if you know for a fact that they would be profitable. At this point I believe you're contradictory for the fun of it. To answer your question, it's DB, one of, if not the biggest anime franchise in the world. It may not be as successful as ...

Re: Funimations 30th anniversary collectible home video release

I'll probably be picking up the season 2 set. I own a couple of the DBoxes up to the cell saga, and I have the newer blu-ray sets that cover the Buu saga.

Unfortunately, I never could get my hands on Season 2 DBOX so I'll use this new season 2 boxset to bridge the gap.

Re: Does anyone else feel that much of the DB fandom enforces low standards?

You said that you need to have strong loyalty to defend modern DB, but isn't that the same for old Dragon Ball? Being a fan doesn't mean you have to be completely loyal to something. It's OK to criticize something you're a fan of. I've been a fan of DB for over 15 years now, and it's my favorite an...

Re: Does anyone else feel that much of the DB fandom enforces low standards?

Remember: Mary Sue's are self insert characters. I.e. a character that clearly represents the author, typically used in fanfiction in which said self-insert suddenly and immediately connect themselves to established characters. Goku is not a Mary Sue; Rey is not a Mary Sue.

Re: Does anyone else feel that much of the DB fandom enforces low standards?

Speaking of Yu Yu Hakusho, I despised the final season for a lot of the reasons we discussed here. Yusuke is an awesome character because he's able to compete with characters much stronger than him via talent and willpower. But then it's revealed none of that matters cause his dad is a demon. fuuuuc...

Re: Does anyone else feel that much of the DB fandom enforces low standards?

Granted my pop culture knowledge is limited to mostly my life time but Empire feels like the first time a big twist like this happened in a movie. I can't recall anything else like it on this scale and it feels like so many subsequent stories are chasing that reaction. With DB the twist mostly work...

Re: Does anyone else feel that much of the DB fandom enforces low standards?

1. Goku being revealed as a Saiyan is fine because his heritage has the opposite effect: It brings him right back down to a lower hierarchy and has to work his way up again solely through sheer will and talent. 2. TLJ felt like both a meta commentary on both these types of stories and Star Wars in g...

Re: Does anyone else feel that much of the DB fandom enforces low standards?

And having Beerus be the actual reason for the Saiyan's destruction not only is fairly stupid, it also manages to defang Frieza by making him just another cog in the machine. Both are examples of lazy writing. It should be clear from the sum total of evidence that Beerus is not the "actual" reason ...

Re: Does anyone else feel that much of the DB fandom enforces low standards?

I'm with Abed since in both cases represent how nonsensical "world-building" can be. In Star Wars, the idea that Rey was actually a nobody, but became "somebody" through sheer will and talent is far more endearing than "lol I'm a Skywalker/Palpatine." And having Beerus be the actual reason for the S...

Re: Does anyone else feel that much of the DB fandom enforces low standards?

Moving away from Goku will not be good for Dragon Ball. He's the emotional spine of the story. Which is pretty much my initial point: DB is dead without Goku. But including Goku basically means that the series can never evolve. It just becomes more of the same. If he has to go away then it's not Dr...
