I disagree to some extent on your term "selfish". He fights for more legitimate self-interested needs, but isn't necessarily selfish. Selfish has nothing but negative connotations.

The Saiyan arc had better pacing because they focussed most of the filler in the Saiyan saga on throwaway filler eps that you can just ignore should you so choose. They didn't stretch out canon material for it. Like, if I wanted to I could watch a much better version of the Saiyan Saga right now ...
