Incidently, is that Lum in your avatar? Then I take it you were already familiar with the word yatsura .

That'd be an affirmative on both counts! But to be honest - not that it's really much of a surprise - my familiarity with the word "yatsura" is pretty much limited to what I've read and been ...

Herms: thank you! I'm super late with saying so and I apologize.

For the record, aside from "bastards/soldiers", the rest of the translation is spot on.

That's very reassuring! So, yeah, I'm going to go ahead and assume that in at least this one instance, the VIZBIG translation is the more ...

There are plenty of acceptable translations, and picking an appropriate one is simply a matter of mood and context. Shipmate, comrade, ally, friend, team, etc... :?

For me it's really just a matter of personal preference. I certainly prefer "nakama" and I don't think English translations ...

I hated how the Fantastic Four looked on-screen, actually. *g* Something about the cloth they used for the costumes? It's kind of how I feel about Piccolo's vaguely Batman and Robin -esque suit. I'm definitely starting to like his actual physical design, but ... that chest plating. Eek.

I still can ...

Like in One Piece, I've come to despise the word "nakama." It's not any more special a word JUST because it's kept in Japanese.

I've always assumed they chose to retain "nakama" simply because it's a difficult word to translate, given there isn't a direct English equivalent available and the ...

Haha, I love how my opinion is consistently and gradually sliding from "so bad it's good" to "well, maybe it really is just good!" The more I look at the stills, the more I like them. I'm finding that for a lot of the information released for the movie, my initial response is "haha, seriously?" then ...

I know Piccolo's not spot-on, but there's still a lot of similarities in the details.

I'd definitely prefer it if his physical design were closer to Piccolo than Spike (edit: by which I mean, more immediately identifiable as Piccolo) - but I do like the detail around his scalp, the ridges that ...

Re: VIZBIG or Tankobon?! The Big Decision!!

Ok, that's awful strange. Here's what my Volume 2 looks like, it's the first printing from November of 2000:

The translation was originally "soldiers". How odd. So, it went from no profanity, to added profanity (complete with a grammatical ...

I honestly cannot wait for this movie to come out. If nothing else, it's going to make for one hell of a midnight showing/spontaneous amateur MST3K performance.

In related news, I can't look away from Spikeolo's scalp. It's entrancing. It has ripples . This is horrible and I love it.

(Editing to ...

Re: VIZBIG or Tankobon?! The Big Decision!!

The VIZBIG Dragonball Z could be censored even more than the t ankob o n.

A (not-so-)quick intro:

I own all forty-two volumes of DB(Z) in the smaller tankoubon-sized format Viz switched to in the mid-2000s as well as most of the larger graphic novels Viz published in the early 2000s. As others ...

Considering this is a topic from 5 months ago I'd say you were A-okay with the small little revival you did.

Haha, well! Good thing I didn't get worked up over nothing. Ahem.

(Thanks. *g*)

edit: oh wow, I already posted here?

Sorry! My bad. Accidentally ...

Dragonball Z: Bio Broly

Wait, so people actually still buy this movie?

Hey, now! I'll have you know Bio-Broly is excellent. Wait, no, sorry, mixed my words up. "Excruciating." As you were.

(But hey, if you're looking to complete a collection, it's only $6 on Amazon! And at that price ...

Fifth or sixth grade for me, I think. It was still early in the Saiya-jin Saga and I watched a handful of episodes at most, having nothing else to watch at the time. I remember - quite clearly - thinking to myself, "This is the stupidest thing I have ever seen." My brother and I mocked it quite ...

I love all the Dragongirls to a degree that is almost alarming, but I'd have to say ... Bulma, definitely, for all the reasons my friends seem to dislike her: she's selfish, loud, rude and petty; she has a, er, highly developed self-esteem (read: ego); she's manipulative, hypocritical, and short ...
