Dragon Ball Thoughts of Others
Moderators: General Help, Kanzenshuu Staff
When the fact that I'm a Dragon Ball fan comes up, I'll openly acknowledge that it's not for everyone, but for nostalgia or whatever reason, I love it. I don't go around trying to convert people into DB fans (the way I do for Firefly ). It's not perfect: some see flaws, others see quirks. For me, it's greater than the sum of its parts.
I remember being in middle school (I'm a college student now) and being proud to show my interest in "more mature" content. Nothing like showing someone an episode of HBO's Spawn animated series to establish that. Looking back, it's a flawed mentality, and others in this thread have already done a great job discussing it. I wanted to add that, whether it's my particular age group or just this point in time, there's a resurgence of nostalgia and a proud-to-be-a-geek mentality. A decade ago, we'd try to show how "mature" we were through our interests. Now, I know people that get together and watch classic Disney movies. It's suddenly cool to know a lot of Transformers trivia. Nobody cared when the new Mortal Kombat game was released, but everybody wanted a piece of the cutesy Wii Sports. The whole thing's been flipped on its head. Just some interesting insight.

'm a closet DBZ fan, I'll put my manga away when someone comes over. It's difficult to be a girl fan of Dragonball, other girls don't get it and boys assume your not really into it or don't take you as seriously as others. Not everyone is like this, but there are definitely are some. I'm very feminine, and a pacifist. For someone outside, juxtapositioning me and Dragonball makes no sense. But to me, it does. It's all symbolism for me, fantasy symbolism. But it's difficult to explain that to another, "No, I don't like watching people get beat up, it's just that that isn't what it is to me..." I'm not doing a good job of explaining what I mean here, but generally I just don't try to explain why I like it so much, there's nothing wrong with liking it, it's easier for me to just not mention it. I think it would be fun to know some people who liked the same things I do that I could geek out with, though.
As for whether it's a kids program or a show for adults... well, I always thought that it is a show for anyone who wants to watch it. It has puns and little jokes that appeal to kids, older kids will like the fighting and adults will like all that plus some of the surprisingly complex interactions between characters.

When I was in grade 8 I attacked anyone who said anything bad about me liking Dragon Ball, so eventually people hating on DBZ wasn't a problem anymore. Probably not the best way to handle that problem, but the point is don't beat yourself up about loving something. They just don't know what they are talking about!Bomber Greek wrote:Anyway, I'm in 8th grade and I like Dragon Ball, yet I don't seem to be "accepted" for that unless I am with my friends.

Hell, I'm a Senior in High School and I love Dragonball! I generally don't give a shit about what people say about the show. They can hate it, and I won't give a damn. They could make jokes about it, calling it a "kid's show", but I wouldn't really care. I don't even know if anybody in my school, (Which has 1,500 students) even knows what Dragonball is. Hell, they don't even ask me, or even have a clue that I like it. As much crap people will throw at it, the games, the show, all of it, I will still like it.
Next quest: Start collecting Dragon Ball Super Blu-Rays whenever season sets get released. Also the Super Manga!

I don't remember anything from Middle school except for the schools name. I do remember a little from Highschool. All my friends were easygoing actually almost everyone was. Plus I got one of them into the show. About three others were already into it or atleast watched it enough to know what it was about. Funny thing is I found out through friends that a lot of people watched the show. College was no different there were a lot of fans of both Videogames and Anime as well. However it did seem to have a smaller niche than in Highschool. Today still one of my friends will sit down and watch the show again in a marathon with me.

Well, you'll be happy to know this thread inspired a long LJ post with lots of cursing and social commentary with an MK:Armageddon pseudo review. All o this stemming from not only Dragonball, but because of douchebags that give its fans crap. Which, well, educated me, at least. Therefore Dragonball is still a life-changing piece of awesome, but we also need *cough* "evil" in order to escape "evil".
... I mean.. yeah... DBZ isn't the same as Pokemon, but it doesn't matter because it's the reason I figured out how the internet can be used for achieving great things. So Dragonball=life-changing.

Yeah, my mom doesn't like me spending money on all the DVDs I get, either.shannarafan wrote:I never got crap for liking it in school, but then only a few knew I liked it and they were fans themselves. Don't you love having bastards for friends?Bomber Greek wrote:one of my bastard friends says sarcastically, "Wow that's some good reading material," and he later compared it to shows like Pokemon and Yu-Gi-Oh.
This easily relates to why I hate the companies that ruin anime. I believe that it's because of them for making anime fans have such a bad reputation.
Anyway, I don't know about Pokemon, but Yu-Gi-Oh! is at least somewhat comparable to Dragonball in terms of content that was edited because it was considered too violent or mature for children. Yes, they are both kids shows but they aren't what most people would think of as "kiddy."
Examples:
Both Pokemon and Yu-Gi-Oh! fall into that category of anime that were "ruined" by their licensing company. Dragonball is certainly not the only franchise that has had this sort of perception created about it. The situation with Pokemon and Yu-Gi-Oh! might be considered even worse because, while Dragonball has at least had some uncut Japanese releases, it is doubtful that either of them ever will. (although there is an almost completely uncut Yu-Gi-Oh! manga being published.)
Anyway, I have several friends who are into anime (only because I got them into it) but only one of them watches Dragonball, and he only watches the english dub because he thinks it's so stupid it's funny. Whenever Dragonball is mentioned in the presence of my other anime-loving friends I usually hear a response like, "Eeeeeeeeeeewwww!" When of course it obvious they've never even really seen the show.
Yeah, the early parts of Yu-Gi-Oh! (which 4Kids practically never even acknowledged the existence of) are pretty frakkin' hardcore. Atem's all setting people on fire, and junk like that.
Speaking of the Cell Jrs' demise scene... You know, I think I might pick up that volume of the manga, so if when anyone cites DBZ as being stupid and kiddyish, I can just flip open to those pages and say, "Yeah, not really."

Re: Dragon Ball Thoughts of Others
Well, it's based on a rather plot-lacking video game rather than a manga, but the anime tends to completely ignore things like Team Rocket's murder of the Marowak in the Pokemon Tower, Team Rocket hunting Slowpoke to cut their tails off and sell to fincance the team, and most of the religious fanatism Team Aqua and Magma were on to.russ869 wrote:

Then again, there's a ton of official Pokemon manga out there that are far more "mature" than what the anime allows. Would something like this pass in the Pokemon anime? Maybe?

I didn't really get too much flak for being a DBZ fan during school. But the only ones that really knew where friends who were also fans. Not because I was hiding it but it only ever really came up with them. Though I did straighten a few people out on their thought of all anime being like Pokemon by showing them GitS and X. Enlightenment can be so entertaining.

They tried to do it with Yu-Gi-Oh, but they didn't sell that well. As for Pokemon, pretty much any anime aimed at young children and whose fanbase is 85% young children has little chance of dual-languae release.russ869 wrote:Don't you love having bastards for friends?Bomber Greek wrote:one of my bastard friends says sarcastically, "Wow that's some good reading material," and he later compared it to shows like Pokemon and Yu-Gi-Oh.

On topic, when I was in 11th grade, people gave me crap for watching Pokemon, and a few did for DBZ, but that was mainly when anime was considered geeky.
I stopped reading the thread right here (but I will finish it, I promise!).Captain Awesome wrote:I swear it gets worse the older you get, I'm almost 20 now and my friends and family look down on it even more.Bomber Greek wrote: Yeah, my mom doesn't like me spending money on all the DVDs I get, either.
"Another Dragonball boxset?"
"Why don't you buy some real movies or something?"
What in God's name is a real movie?
I won't bother repeating myself.
"Well, if for some reason I can't watch what I like because I'm too old, then I'm also too old to take your advice, and therefore our interaction is paradoxical, and if one of us doesn't explode, we should both be locked in prisons across the galaxy. Or you could shut the hell up and let me watch what I like!"
*pantpant*
I think the fact that it gets to me this much is problematic, though. XD *reads rest of thread*
