Ironic Things...
Point out things that were really ironic to you...
Remember when the Z-Warriors followed Kaioshin and Kibito to Babidi's spaceship? The ones that followed were the main characters of the entire Z series (Goku, Gohan, Vegeta, Piccolo, and Krillin).

Re: Ironic Things...
Krillin is the only human not to train under King Kai, unlike Yamcha, Tien, Chaotsu, and even Piccolo.
Since Krillin didn't die in the Saiyan saga, he never received King Kai's training. Yet I recall in the Buu saga Krillin talks to King Kai even though I think that's filler.

The biggest irony is that Vegeta made fun of Goku's compassion in their battle, but ultimately saw that it was that compassion that made Goku better.

Re: Ironic Things...
My favorite: Piccolo kidnaps four year old Gohan to train him to utilize his anger and ultimately follow him down the path of the demon warlord. Goku trains Gohan to control his anger and follow him down the path of situational savior of the world.
Both fail: by doing what the other wanted. Piccolo makes Gohan stronger and a little more aware of his power, but diffuses Piccolo's hate; an ending Goku would have loved had he considered it. Meanwhile Goku pushes Gohan to Super Saiyan 2 through a ringer that Saiyan-Era Piccolo would have endorsed, resulting in precisely the boy Piccolo wanted six or so years ago... all to Cell-Era Piccolo's horror. The Villain's darkest scheme bears fruit, the Hero's best intentions bring death and pain down to the last wire.

In trying to stop the Super Saiyan from appearing, Freeza was ultimately the catalyst for his creation.
Re: Ironic Things...
The whole idea of Goku's son both being a pampered crybaby and being kidnapped to receive harshest training of the series at the hands of his arch-nemesis -- with Piccolo fully realizing he may be rearing his own worst enemy -- is seriously one of the best structural ideas Toriyama has in the entire series. Just a great double twist. Its payoff comes a bit quickly in Piccolo's redemption, but holy hell is that a way to kick off post-23rd Tenkaichi Budokai time-skip.BlazingFiddlesticks wrote:My favorite: Piccolo kidnaps four year old Gohan to train him to utilize his anger and ultimately follow him down the path of the demon warlord. Re: Ironic Things...
Freeza letting his arrogance lead to his defeat 3 times in a row:
1. Goku was willing to let Freeza live after he got chopped in half. Freeza's arrogance made him shoot an energy beam at Goku, causing Goku to finish him off which nearly killed him.
2. Freeza immediately rushing to Earth after being restored with cyborg parts, instead of blowing it up from space wiping everyone out in one go. He could have also planned his attack better.
3. As seen in the new movie, Freeza immediately coming to Earth in his golden form without learning how his power worked as Goku explained in the movie.
Hell, almost everything Freeza did in the entire series came back to bite him in the ass in some way. Freeza killing Krillin caused Goku to become Super Saiyan. Had Freeza shot and killed Goku first he could have avoided that.

The sight of gold hair made Freeza's blood run cold following him being humbled by SSJ Goku on Namek. Then fast forward to Resurrection F and the colour that he chooses for his Ultimate Form is Gold. Hell, he even wanted everyone to refer to him as Golden Freeza.

The biggest truths aren't original. The truth is ketchup. It's Jim Belushi. Its job isn't to blow our minds. It's to be within reach.

Re: Ironic Things...
I think the biggest irony in the entire series is that Goku was sent to Earth to destroy it (fuck off, Minus), but ended up being its ultimate savior instead. As well as being classed as a low-rank reject but becoming the strongest Saiyan in the universe.

Herms wrote:The fact that the ridiculous power inflation is presented so earnestly makes me just roll my eyes and snicker. Like with Freeza, where he starts off over 10 times stronger than all his henchmen except Ginyu (because...well, just because), then we find out he can transform and get even more powerful, and then he reveals he can transform two more times, before finally coming out with the fact that he hasn't even been using anywhere near 50% of his power. Oh, and he can survive in the vacuum of space. All this stuff is just presented as the way Freeza is, without even an attempt at rationalizing it, yet the tone dictates we're supposed to take all this silly grasping at straws as thrilling danger. So I guess I don't really take the power inflation in the Boo arc seriously, but I don't take the power inflation in earlier arcs seriously either, so there's no net loss of seriousness. I think a silly story presented as serious is harder to accept than a silly story presented as silly.

This is great. Probably something I never appreciated as a fan who came into the series during DBZ when Piccolo had already essentially been introduced as a 'good guy.'Cipher wrote:The whole idea of Goku's son both being a pampered crybaby and being kidnapped to receive harshest training of the series at the hands of his arch-nemesis -- with Piccolo fully realizing he may be rearing his own worst enemy -- is seriously one of the best structural ideas Toriyama has in the entire series. And he won the fight, so why is it ironic? Nappa lost his cool and fought sloppily, resulting in Goku dominating him. Vegtea didn't win, he didn't lose but he didn't win, and it's ironic because Vegtea had no need to go into his great ape from but because he get so angry he thought he had to.
