Why so much hate for Gohan now?

From what I see people who want Gohan to do stuff are upset he doesn't really do anything anymore. He doesn't develop, he isn't particularly useful outside small situations, and his only job is mainly to spectate if it's not getting beaten up. On the other side people are happy he finally has pretty much attained what he's wanted and seem to think that there's no need for him to really do much. However they still want him around, even though by being as he is, he doesn't really add shit to series. He's pretty much a complete character without much else to do with as far as the series seems concerned. Personally I figure since that's the case, then it's time to phase him out so a new character can get worthwhile screen time while we check in on Gohan occasionally. But no I hear that he still has to be around even more than that...despite not offering jack shit? It's like some people really need a couple of shmoe's to be cheerleaders or jobbers and that's so important?

Pretty much the problem. He's neither a competent fighter nor utilized as an interesting character. He's at best dull screen time to give us a break from other scenes. Especially since every character who isn't really capable, more or less loses all relevance and never really does much after they become too weak. Pretty much every character from the humans, to Piccolo, to Gohan, and even to Vegeta for most of GT.

When he was a little kid he got separated from his mother and learned his dad was killed by his uncle, then got trained by Piccolo because he had to help when the Saiyans came to Earth.
Then he HAD to go to Namek in order to revive the deceased warriors, where he was being bossed around by Krillin, then Vegeta, then Piccolo then his dad.
Meanwhile at any time on Earth Chi-Chi forces him to be a nerd nonstop, to study.
Then here comes the Android/cCell saga where his dad get sick but then doesn't and he is forced to train and fight again when he wasn't really willing to.
Then he spends the next 10 years becoming a huge nerd, and when Buu pops out he is driven by circumstances to fight and to become strong, but it's not by his own choosing either.
And in Super he is driven by Videl.

What I don't understand is why he hasn't snapped yet and killed everyone, so they can leave him alone. Nobody has ever let Gohan be himself, so he doesn't know what he is. The only time he could, he just created the great Saiyaman.

Gohan being a book worm is as relevant and progressive as Roshi being a pervert. What does Roshi being a pervert do? Absolutely nothing. What does Gohan being a study nut build up to or do for the story, absolutely nothing.

If that's the case, then I think Toriyama should've either ended the series either at Frieza or Cell or choose another protagonist for the Buu saga and have everybody who ain't fighting in Super be killed off for good.

If people expect the character to add shit to the plot, then the author better do a good job of it. I don't care if Gohan won't turn to be a super major protagonist like Goku, just do something, even if it means expanding his bookworming skills. Hell, he can be a hacker for all I care.

I actually really like the way Gohan's character was developed over the years, through the Boo saga, peaking with the entire Great Saiyaman arc (even the filler).

Now he's just there (and barely that), which is disappointing for a character who's life and upbringing we know more intimately than anyone else on the show.

I don't really need Gohan to step back into the ring, so to speak. But his Saiyaman antics in Battle of Gods were so, so welcome. I can enjoy watching him and Videl try to have a normal family life as long as there are also fun reminders that they aren't normal, passive people. They're a couple of quirky fighting superheroes with other hobbies and passions. I'd even settle for spending a little time with Gohan as a scholar (and ... whatever Videl does?); just give them some personality again.

Early Boo arc Gohan and Videl are so much fun. There's no excuse for making them milquetoast.

I had a bit of a laughter fit reading this. It's so true . He's so boring and forgettable you could totally replace em with a cardboard cutout. They'd both manage to leave the exact same impact. Nothing to add. Perhaps nice to look at. Very easy to knock over. Truly the perfect description of his booking.

I don't care for Gohan at all, never did besides a portion of the Boo arc. It's not hate, it's just that's fun to joke around his treatment recently. It's the same with the Yamcha jokes.

What is it with some of you and your wish to see all "non relevant" characters killed off? Is it part of some pseudo-masochistic wish to see Goku and Vegeta go all grim-dark, fail to resurrect everyone, become even MORE grim dark, and everything just starts being about exploding body parts like Fist of the North Star, or something? Because that's not Dragon Ball. It's not even close.

Well I knew before the new material there were 2 camps: Camp A - "Leave Gohan alone he doesn't want to train if he doesn't want to" and the best Camp: "Gohan has a responsibility to keep the world safe!" Well the new material came out, and Gohan is getting his ass tanned like he was Yamcha (not a dig at Yamcha, but let's face it his win/lose ratio is worst than Krillin's with none of the Guru Powerup) Now Camp A is complaining with the Super Camp because their boy is floundering. That's probably why there is so much hate now.
