Chances of Gohan Being Awesome in 'Super'
What do you think the chances of Gohan being a total bad-ass in Super are? I mean he really hasn't had his moment to shine in the series as of yet. I know he didn't get his moment in GT either but at least back then Gohan could blow up a city by simply powering up!

I wouldn't get my hopes up if I was you... Toei isn't gonna take no risks.

There is nothing Gohan enjoys more than blowing up cities. I feel Final Bout perfectly captured this.

How is he not awesome??? To me personally, I think his moments with Videl are some of the best things Super has to offer. I don't need to see him fight.

When Gohan's not saving the city as the Great Saiyaman, he's blowing it up by powering up.

Gohan already achieved his goal ever since Buu Saga, theres nothing wrong with him now unless your just a Gohan fanboy who just wank his SSJ2 self in Cell Saga and dont even understand his character. You dont need to be the strong to be awesome or relevant, just look at Bulma,Satan etcc..

I personally lost all my hopes for Gohan to be awesome or at least entertaining character. I don't really see him anything. Don't kill me, but I've allways felt him a failure! For me, he didn't display a single sign of personality!

When Gohan worried if he could transform into a freakin Super Saiyan in Resurrection F, that for me was the absolute telling sign that Toriyama had not little to no interest in progressing the character. And when Toriyama stops caring for his characters, what chances do they have of being utilised well in the hands of Toei?

At least he didn't ricochet bullets onto his pregnant wife and the God of Destruction in Super. So he is like 100% cooler already for not being irresponsible with stray fire. Safety first!
He can't cook, though, so he won't win at Iron Chef, so that is less awesome, I guess -- but neither can Vegeta or Bulma, so it evens out. Now I'm curious: can Goku, Krillin and #18 cook? Who is the cooking power couple? Does Chichi win by default?

I'm anxious to see how things play out in tomorrows episode of Super, seeing as how Gohan should play a big role in it. I hope they don't fuck it up, who knows maybe they'll surprise me..

The chances are probably one in a million, as he really doesn't have anything to prove or have a chip on his shoulder unlike kuririn. Gohan defeated Cell, he proved he could step up to the plate. I think he just wants to live a normal life now, but if the time comes i'm sure he will start training again, but as long as Goku, Vegeta, and Gotenks are around he doesnt need too. If anyone has a chip on their shoulder it should be Yamcha.

Hey, you never know. There's still a lot of Super left and Gohan could do a lot of awesome things-

Re: Chances of Gohan Being Awesome in 'Super'
Man even when I ain't around these kinda threads keep coming up. I'm a fan and I seriously have to say "Let it go". By real life standards, Gohan has got it made. He is a scholar doing...fuck knows what because the series doesn't give a fuck about him enough to tell us what he even wants to do. He has a loving wife Videl who brings cute chemistry between them....but they are also so bland and boring now that really there's absolutely nothing special about them. They're relationship is as interesting as cardboard. He's gonna be father probably off screen and none of it will really mean anything. Or maybe he could have family time like Krillin has like when he and his family.....no wait I can't really recall much of that since none of that really matters to Dragon Ball or hardly happened. We know he ain't gonna do much to help out protect the world, so that leaves us with average family guy who does things...mainly off screen probably since this ain't his show. What Gohan really does, has nothing to do with what Dragon Ball mainly is, so that is why he doesn't well....do much.
But the thing is....let it go. It's not gonna change any time soon. Might as well accept it, and move on. For some people it may hurt a bit yeah, but that pain or frustration should subside a certain degree and maybe go away if you let it go. Yes Gohan is lame, boring, has absolutely nothing really interesting going on with him, but this has happened for everyone before him. We've seen this happen to Piccolo, to Tenshinhan, to Krillin, to Bulma, to pretty much everyone who's ever been a supporting character alongside Goku. It happened to Vegeta too in GT. It may happen again sometime soon to Beerus and Whis. I'm sure people wouldn't have thought Muten Roshi would become pretty irrelevant over time despite how prominent of a figure he was in Dragon Ball, but even then the time came for him. If it doesn't come, then the series will end first. God became prominent towards the end of Dragon Ball, and he eventually became pretty irrelevant. He existed, you remember he exists, but he doesn't really do much.
That's pretty much the cycle for all side characters. We're set up for apparently a bunch of new characters from another universe, and going by the past a few may be incorporated into the Dragon Ball group. If the series presses on, it'll be very likely that they too will eventually become irrelevant as time goes on. Goku is really the sole exception to this. He is Dragon Ball. When he's gone for good, it's likely the series will go with it as I don't think the series can continue without him. It can continue without Beerus, without Whis, without Vegeta, without pretty much any of the cast. Goku could go all by himself to a whole new reality, and Dragon Ball can continue just fine.
It's nice to want Gohan to be awesome and relevant again. It's nice to want the same for Piccolo or for someone else. It's just very unlikely to happen. It's fun to make jokes about how useless and irrelevant pretty much everyone is, but that joke has existed since arguably earlier portions of Dragon Ball. It's nothing new. Really we just gotta try and enjoy what we got. I say try cause not everyone is gonna be happy with how Super presents itself, which I ain't entirely satisfied with, but oh well it is what it is. Gohan is done. The great mystery is probably who's turn is it next to be done, or maybe like Vegeta another individual will get a chance to return to a more interesting role. Just gotta wait and see.

I don't think Gohan will ever become a "Badass" again, though I still think he will fight here and there as he did in ROF. Personally, I think Goku and Vegeta are going to travel to Universe 6, with Goten and Trunks sneaking along with them. That could create some pretty good father and son moments like Goku and Gohan used to have. That's going to leave Earth in U7 pretty much wide open, we don't know how long Goku and Vegeta will stay in U6, for all we know it could be years. If that's the case, while they are gone, Gohan has a perfect excuse to train in case a new threat hits Earth, which if it does, it'll be pretty good going back and forth between U7 with them and U6 with Goku/Vegeta. Do I think Gohan will ever be a Super Saiyan God and finally kick Goku's can? No, but I think it's safe to say he COULD surpass Kid Buu. If Goku/Vegeta are gone to U6, the entire cast pretty much becomes relevant again, err... even Yamcha to some extent... Well that might be taking it a bit far eh?
Edit - I think a big problem is that we always expect the next villain to be stronger than the last, which is understandable. If Goku started fighting weaker villains after Freeza what's the point? Gohan however, I don't think will have a problem with it, as long as they are stronger than Kid Buu. Why? To establish that he can just be as good, if not better, as he was in the Buu Saga if he actually trains. This, in my mind is the only way we will ever see Gohan become relevant again. As long as Goku is around and fights all the battles, Gohan nor is the rest of the cast going to ever stand out again. Goku and Vegeta have to keep fighting stronger Enemies, it's just the way Dragon Ball works at the moment, and if they leave Goku again in terms of power, Like Beerus did when Goku was a SSJ3, then Gohan doesn't have a chance in hell as long as he and Vegeta are around. They can use this U6 opportunity, to let Gohan find his own path, and fight the battles again, at least one more time. That's all it takes. Though if this never happen's I'm perfectly at peace with the way Gohan is. He is part Human after all, fighting probably feels to him as a Video Game we beat 100 times feels to us, and we just throw it back on the shelf and quit after we get bored with it.

Forgot to add, as far as the villain goes, he could come from U6 just as Goku and Vegeta go to U6. If Beerus beat's Champa, It would be cool if a sore looser from Champas team comes to U7 for revenge against the star players of U7's team, Goku and Vegeta, only to find Gohan and that Goku and Vegeta are gone to his Universe 6.

Re: Chances of Gohan Being Awesome in 'Super'
In RoF people overlook the fact that Gohan was holding back, because he didn't want to kill Freeza's soldiers, just disarm them. Freeza said it made him sick.
We have to remember that he was never a fighter mentally. He fought because he HAD to fight. He doesn't thirst for battle like Goku and Vegeta, and after a period of peace his power would be subdued. It's not Toriyama betraying the character; he's in fact staying true to it (even though I expect Gohan to play a huge role in tournament).
I think too many fans just expect Goku's reincarnation in Gohan, and it's a shame, because they both have their own distinct personalities.

Re: Chances of Gohan Being Awesome in 'Super'
That is what I and plenty of people find interesting about him. His great contrast to Goku. That's what made him joining battles and being forced to fight interesting. It's interesting we don't have a martial artist who really wants to become strong and be the best he can be. Goku, Krillin, Tenshinhan, Yamcha, pretty much every fighter early on had this mentality. Gohan does not. That it what makes him great and admirable. He's dealing with what he's not fond of for the greater good.DragonHermit wrote:In RoF people overlook the fact that Gohan was holding back, because he didn't want to kill Freeza's soldiers, just disarm them. Gohan not being like Goku is not what I think bugs people. It's that you have to love food, love fighting, and have pretty much no life outside of that to be actually important and relevant. You have to have this mentality or else you aren't allowed to be a significant character. Goku, Vegeta, Beerus, and Whis all share this and no one else does. Why must you have a fighter mentality to fight? Why be like Goku and Vegeta when you can have different reasons and motivations. Why must you want to fight and get stronger because it's what you live for? Why must that be the only reason to fight. Isn't it more interesting to have a bunch of people be important, and all have different reasons for wanting to fight? Whether it's to protect someone, to be the very best like no one ever was, to avenge the fallen, to get loads of money, to pick up chicks, etc. That brings more interesting dynamics and motivations. Instead we have a shared borg collective with more or less similar goals, but some smaller differences to seperate each and everyone who is important.

I don't know what's worse: Gohan being an insipid twat or people excusing the poor writing and implementation of this character by saying "he was never a fighter; they're staying true to his personality!"
