Goku's age confusion

I thought it was a silly dub mistake... These are one of the things I didn't like about the FUNImation dub. Did the Ocean dub make the same mistake? Anyway, it's hard to tell Goku's exact age from just watching the anime. I didn't know his age until he said it. It's an easy misconception just like the Tullece being Goku's brother myth.

If I remember correctly, Goku tells Bulma that he's 14 sometime around his first bath in one of the early Dragon Ball episodes. Isn't this accurate? But then again, I saw it in a fan-subbed Japanese DVD.

Yes, Goku does say this. But Toriyama retcons this by saying that Goku couldn't count properly at the time, and later Bulma helps him learn.

I LOVE that scene... Goku as a kid is just comedy waiting to happen. I love how Bulma is talking about him behind his back when he's actually just standing there. So yeah little Goku thought he was fourteen and that breasts where buttocks . I geuss you can't blame a kid that has been stuck by himself in the mountains.

Don't remember Ocean DB saying anything about their ages. Know that Funimation fixed it on DB. Still will look weird due to watching DB then DBZ though.

A Goku's Age thread. a lot of people seem confused by this. It's pretty simple math, if you ask me. We know goku was 12 at the twenty-first Tenkaichi Budokai. From there, we know how long before or after the 21st Tenkaichi Budokai was. Therefore, it's easy to know Goku's age.


Goku was:
11 or 12 when he met Bulma
12 in the 21st Tenkaichi Budokai
12 or 13 in the Red Ribon Army Saga
15 in the 22nd Tenkaichi Budokai
18 in the 23rd Tenkaichi Budokai
19 when Gohan was born
23 when Radditz arrived
(From here on, numbers in parenthesis are the number of years since Goku was born, and number not in parenthesis are Goku's physical age)
23 when he died the first time(Goku was dead for a year, during which he didn't age)
23(24) when he fought Nappa and Vegita
23(24) When he fought Freeza
23(24) when he became a Super Saiya-jin
24(25) when he returned to Earth
27(28) when he fought #19, and became ill
28(28) when he fought Cell(Goku spent a year in the Room of Spirit and Time while only a day passed in the outside world)
28(28) when he died for the second time
28(35) when he fights Buu(Goku was dead for 7 years, during which he did not age)
38(45) at the end of Dragonball Z, when he goes off with Uub
43(50) at the beginning of Dragonball GT
12?(50) after he is wished back to being a kid(Goku looks, to me, to be about the same age as he was in the beginning of Dragonball)
12?(50) when he fights Bebi
13?(51) in the Super 17 Saga
13?(51) against the Evil Dragons
43(51) at the end of Dragonball GT(present part)(He does turn back into a Grown-up at the end, doesn't he?)

There you have it. Now you can look at my handy chart, and know how old Goku was at any time during the anime, and not have to mess with any tricky math.

It looks like they count the day spent in the Room of Spirit and Time and the time spent in the other world.

Age 750, May 7 = 21st Tenkaichi-Budôkai [12, according to Gokû himself]

Age 756, May 7 = 23rd Tenkaichi-Budôkai, marries Chi-chi [18-19, according to "Dragon Ball Z Son Gokû Densetsu", but the "19" probably accounts for the "wedding filler"]
