I think I had just joined the forum back in 2013, but I don't remember you back then.
Ian McDiarmid is a far superior actor for one, and he doesn't have nearly the horrendous dialog that Young was made to regurgitate, and much of the time Palpatine isn't always saying, "something, something, something, dark side". He's also not always cackling or making corny jokes.
I've never heard "coherence" used in that way. Fine, people don't speak that way, but people don't speak like they do in Gilmore Girls, Tarantino, Kevin Smith, or Aaron Sorkin movies. It doesn't matter as long as it's interesting.
You consider that line genius? We're just two very different people then because cringe inducing lines such as that make me shudder. It's not funny, it's not clever, it's the worst sort of Saturday morning cartoon schlock imaginable.
it sounds like someone trying to read a glaringly pre-prepared script as fast as possible while also matching his words to mouth flaps.
I'll take that anyday over "Listen to me sound... evil" dialog delivered unconvincingly by an untalented actor without experience. Cue Dr. Evil pink to corner of mouth.
The biggest truths aren't original. The truth is ketchup. It's Jim Belushi. Its job isn't to blow our minds. It's to be within reach.

Palpatine cackles all the time; are we discussing the same character here? Palpatine as Darth Sidious does nothing but seethe with evil when he speaks.

And please show me an '80s Saturday-morning cartoon villain that makes black comedy over ripping people's arms off. I also fail to comprehend your hyperbolic condemnation of Young's acting. While I don't profess to believe she is or ever was Oscar material, the notion that she's a bad actress simply comes across to me as erroneous.

No 80s cartoon would show that level of violence, but the fundamentals are the same, evil characters in 80s cartoons had evil sounding voices and performances.

My condemnation isn't hyperbolic, I find nothing believable in the performance. I don't know the person, but as an actress, I'm not a fan. That's not limited to one performance either.
Palpatine cackles all the time; are we discussing the same character here? Palpatine as Darth Sidious does nothing but seethe with evil when he speaks.
He also calmly talks to people and gives orders and plays people like a fiddle. The prequels were terrible, but he was one of the few good things about them. It's because of his performance that i buy people would trust him and give him more political power. Plus, McDiarmid is a much better actor. He also doesn't have to spout lines like "Whatever turns you on" Which is a very memorable, BS dub line that is infamous.

A very convincing argument.

Oh and it absolutely figures you would be riding on the "prequels are terrible" bandwagon, ABED.

This isn't about being on a bandwagon. I don't dislike them because everyone else seems to dislike them, I dislike them because I don't enjoy them. But I think I'm fairer in my assessment than many. You took one line from a post and think you know what I think about those films. I enjoy the third film, though it still has a lot of problems, not the least of which was the actor playing Anakin is awful. He's not a good actor, but he did have at least one good performance and this wasn't it. For the record, his good performance was in Shattered Glass. The chemistry between him and Padme was non existent, Gungan battle in the first movie was horrible, Anakin blows up the shield BY ACCIDENT, and in the third film, the ending of the otherwise good fight between Anakin and Obi Wan is weak sauce. The prequels' strongest points were Liam Neeson, kickass Yoda, Ewan McGregor as Obi Wan, and Ian McDiarmid. This is the second time you've assumed why I enjoy something and missed the mark. Apparently I dislike the dub and the prequels in order to fit in with the herd.

How did this turn into a Star Wars thread?

Anyway, my two cents is that the prequels were bad, but not as bad as many people claim. There's stuff in the EU that was worse than the worst of the prequels and stuff that was better than the best of the OT, though. Too bad it's all being ignored now.
Cool stuff that I upload here because Youtube will copyright claim it: https://vimeo.com/user60967147

It's not really a SW thread, just making a point that I didn't mindlessly bash the prequels since Exor has stated twice that he believes I'm a bandwagon jumper, once with Star Wars and the first being the dub. Apparently I dislike the dub and the prequels because I'm trying to be fashionable. I listed my reasons to demonstrate that I have reasons that are my own for my opinions.

We're not making any headway by controverting this. Let's just agree to disagree; it's purely subjective either way--my only contention was you stating your personal view as universal truth.

I'll just abscond from the conversation by leaving you with this classic bit of Saturday-morning cartoon villain dialogue. https://youtu.be/ktqa1CnOYH8?t=27s

In ep 149 where Bulma calls the gang about the remote to turn off Android 17 and 18, Chi Chi says, "It's Bulma and she's calling Collect!" And everyone yells "Don't accept!"

Also when Bulma tells them to accept the charges she also says, "Yamcha has to give me a foot rub!" and Yamcha replies, "She knows I hate rubbing her feet!"

Uh, what? Doesn't FUNI know Bulma and Yamcha have broken up by now? I don't think Vegeta would like it if he knew Yamcha still gave Bulma foot rubs.

Controverting? Why not just write "argue"?

I don't agree to that :)

Fair enough, though I really wish you hadn't extrapolated my reasons for disliking things based on single statements without context.

Are you really comparing Freeza's dialog to The Shining? Jack's character went insane, and if I'm being completely honest, the cute dialog, while enjoyable, is too cute. That said, his entire performance wasn't limited to that one scene. Dub Frieza is more often than not spouting horrendous dialog including this gem "What's the matter? Is your phone call over? Good thing they reached you before I disconnected your number!" while sounding... evil (dr. evil pinky gesture)

Here's some more bad dub lines
Bulma telling Porunga "You're cute"
"Krillin's in da house!"
Kaio-sama: "Awwww yeeeah! OK! Give it to him, Goku! Oh boy! Uh huh! Make him really FEEEEL it! Yeah, yeah, yeah!"
Piccolo's motivational speech (if I haven't already mentioned it, and if I have, it bares repeating because it's just that bad)

That's a fine query. Perhaps you should ask the Kai scriptwriters that very same question. In all honesty, it was the first word to come to mind when writing that post.

That makes no sense. Kai used that sort of overly elaborate dialog MOSTLY if not only for Freeza, a character who spoke in that sort of pompous, wordy manner. It's characterization whereas EVERYONE in the Z dub spouts really awful cheesy lines. You ironically have less tolerance for wordy dialog than you do cheesy dialog.

And why do you adore the "whatever turns you on" line?

It's a sarcastic quip directed at Goku to denigrate his haughtiness.

I'm guessing you put more thought into that response than they did when writing that awful line.

Was it necessary for them to make it a vaguely sexual line that isn't in keeping with Freeza's character? It's not even clever.

Yamcha: Do you remember the spell to release him - do you know all the words?
Bulma: Of course! I'm not gonna pull a Freeza and screw it up!
Master Roshi: Bulma, I think Freeza failed because he wore too many clothes!
Is the kind of BS dub line that's supposed to pass as clever.

Then there's one of my least favorite
Goku: Look Vegeta, people popcorn!
Vegeta: What is he on?

By contrast, here's dialog in Kai that I like
Freeza: Once again my dreams of immortality have been crushed upon the shores of your incompetence.
Verbose? Sure, and conveys character.

The line about Freeza is somewhat close to the Japanese, excluding the added 'too many clothes.'

And I find the people popcorn line absolutely hilarious so I guess just different tastes lol

Here's the thing though. Frieza WAS the only one to talk like that, at least in the FUNI dub. Vegeta and Nappa kind of did too back when Ocean was dubbing the show, but the Remastered version took a lot of the more cheesy lines out of that version (even if there were plenty that were still kept in). And of course, the show started to get more faithful to the original Japanese by the time we got to Androids #17 and #18...so if you think about it, Freeza WAS the only main villain to be constantly saying lines like that. Sure, I think Super Buu occasionally gets in on it too, but still not nearly as often.

So, in retrospect, Freeza does come off as unique in that he comes off as an unhinged, delusional psychopath (which, frankly, he is even in the Original version. He just expresses those traits differently in that version). Now did the dub writers put that much thought into how they characterized Freeza? Well, I don't know. But even if they didn't, the end result is what matters.

The original dub still counts. The content of the lines may be slightly different for each character, but they all are saddled with terrible dialog such as "This will be easier than coloring inside the lines". And yes, the end result is what matters, but the end result was a hatchet job and a slipshod product.
The line about Freeza is somewhat close to the Japanese, excluding the added 'too many clothes.'
I know, it's a pun about spelling out the spell or something to that effect. It's a cheesy joke that's meant to be a bad pun, but at least it's a pun that makes sense and is somewhat amusing. The dub is an unfunny punchline that has zero setup.

Here's a line from the dub that I'm fond of because of how utterly dumb it is "I wouldn't want to be the mountain lion"
