Would Goku feel despair if everyone hated him?
Would Goku feel despair if everyone hated him?
Let's say one of the plot points of the relatively darker (original) script for BoG made its way into some of the new arcs in Super. Imagine everyone started hating Goku. How would he react when faced with this situation? Would he not care? Would he keep up his cheerful and playful demeanor? Would he get enraged? Would he feel despair for the first time, at least until he finds the one responsible for it? I'm not really sure how Goku would react myself. I know this was somewhat toyed with in the Bebi arc of GT, but imagine here that Goku DOESN'T know someone is controlling everyone and he believes they hate him for something he did.

No, why would he? Vegeta hates on Goku all the time yet Goku seems more cheery around him then anyone, infact he would probably be more cheery around everyone just to piss them off more.
Re: Would Goku feel despair if everyone hated him?
A part of me wants to say yes but given how little regard he has for anyone else when they're not in-danger or useful to him somehow, I don't imagine this bothering him as long as he could still do what he wanted.
When someone tells you, "Don't present your opinion as fact," what they're actually saying is, "Don't present your opinion with any conviction. Because I don't like your opinion, and I want to be able to dismiss it as easily as possible." Don't fall for it.

Toriyama!Gokû no, Toriyama!Gokû wouldn't be affected, he'd brush it right off.
Now, Toei!Gokû? I'm already a little worried for Toei!Gokû, I could see him being susceptible to despair if the conditions were right.

Yes. Goku's not a complete social retard like some of you seem to think. If his best friends from childhood and own children began to hate him he would definetely begin to feel negative emotions within himself and deep confusion. The way some of you describe Goku it's like he wouldn't even have cared when Krillin got blown up right in front of his eyes by Freeza.
Vegeta is a terrible example to use, he's not a family memeber or childhood friend of his, the first time they met they engaged in a battle to the death. Goku doesn't expect Vegeta to like him. Even so as of right now Vegeta doesn't hate himBaggie_Saiyan wrote:No, why would he? Vegeta hates on Goku all the time yet Goku seems more cheery around him then anyone.
Re: Would Goku feel despair if everyone hated him?
Goku's only shown caring about his family or friends when they're of use to him or in-danger. Otherwise he's fine with not seeing them or wasting a second thought on them for huge chunks of time. Now if everyone just hated Goku but he still got to sleep in his house, eat the same food and train, he wouldn't give a shit. If their negative emotions got in the way of his obsession, then he'd probably react. The Monkey King wrote:Yes. Goku's not a complete social retard like some of you seem to think. He would finally cry.

I think Goku would be a little upset, but wouldn't be bothered by at all after like a day or so. As long as Goku can throw punch and kicks and fire all sorts of ki blasts, he's always have a smile on his face regardless.

Re: Would Goku feel despair if everyone hated him?
Maybe he cried in some filler scene or in a film? Yeah, in the manga he never did though.
Re: Would Goku feel despair if everyone hated him?
I don't think adult Gokû's ever been shown crying.
The only two times I can think of were both child Gokû; the one mentioned before where he saw Granpa Gohan after Baba's tournament, and then in the Path to Power 10th Anniversary movie near the end where he's crying over (Android 8's death?) before powering up.

I think he'd be a bit concerned, no? It would be too sudden of a change for him to just brush off. I don't think he'd cry or anything, but he would probably get annoyed.

Goku isn't self-aware enough to notice how others feel about him.

Re: Would Goku feel despair if everyone hated him?
Yes, I do think he would be affected by this. The series often breezes over some of the more emotional stuff to the point where the characters seem a bit too detached for my liking, Goku being the first example. But if they had introduced this concept into the plot then I am sure we would've seen Goku react badly at suddenly being hated by his friends and family. I actually would like to see him out of his element for once and not in the comedic way.
I remember being taken aback a little when Goku started crying when he met his grandfather, his emotional range being fairly narrow even back then.
Has the original script been released? Was this one the ideas they had for the movie ?

Re: Would Goku feel despair if everyone hated him?
Goku would definitely notice. He's absent minded, but if everyone treated him differently he wouldn't despair so much as become confused and try to figure out what's going on, why they're acting this way all of a sudden. He'd probably suspect it was some evil scientist or something.
And if that doesn't work, he'll go for help. I don't know any sources but I'm pretty sure Goku would go for help if it meant dealing with a family/friend problem he can't solve. Probably go to one of those family therapy things. of course he wouldn't know what to do except promise whatever he can do for his family, because Goku doesn't break his promises and he follows along with it
if everything else fails....I really can't see him give up. I just can't. this is the same guy who eagerly battled a God and came out smiling even after he lost. Goku would be sad, but I can see him still stubbornly try to win his family over, maybe even try and crack a joke to their sullen faces like be does with Vegeta.
even if it took years, he wouldn't stop, because Goku is that kind of guy. he would never give up on his family and friends, just like they never give up on him.

They didn't release it, but we know that it was one of the original script ideas for BoG.Michsi wrote:Has the original script been released? Was this one the ideas they had for the movie ?
Actually, I had been thinking since before that perhaps the Saiya had had evil planted in their hearts by someone. That was Beerus, God of Destruction, from this [movie]; it was something that I’d been thinking about since way, way back, so I managed it relatively quickly.
I had made Beerus more of a bad guy, and a kind of story where everyone is taken over and given an evil heart, but Toriyama-sensei in his way apparently felt that, “It’s after the earthquake, so I want it to be, not a tragic story, but a positive one,” and it came to have its present form.
http://www.kanzenshuu.com/movie/battle-of-gods/I showed [my idea] to Toriyama-sensei, saying, “I’d like to make it this kind of story,” and what came back was already finished up like a script. (laughs) At first I’d thought about the themes of “good and evil” and “what is a hero” with a bit of a serious feel. But Toriyama-sensei seemed to to feel strongly that, since the [2011 Tohoku] earthquake, he wanted it to be, not a tragic story, but a positive, forward-looking story, of friendship and camaraderie, and the story took shape like that. It was like, “This truly is Dragon Ball.” What was I doing? (laughs)
Re: Would Goku feel despair if everyone hated him?
Ah yes, I remember that. To be honest I always felt that the original ideas sounded interesting and wished some of that would've made it into the movie. On the other hand I also understood why Toriyama wanted to keep it light hearted.
Re: Would Goku feel despair if everyone hated him?
Such a shame this couldn't have been made, I mean I like Beerus and the version we got but having an actual story try to give an in-universe look into just how good or bad Goku is for the Earth would've been amazing.Doctor. wrote:They didn't release it, but we know that it was one of the original script ideas for BoG.Michsi wrote:Has the original script been released?
