Would you like a more mature and deeper db story
I just wanna get this out of the way I love db the way it is and I honestly have no problem with the tone of the show because db is a kids show after all.
I've always wanted to have a deeper and more mature version of the series(done by someone else)kinda like some of the star wars novels about the saiyans, freeza, Dr gero and maybe even the hole daimao, saiyan, freeza and cell arcs adapted

Re: Would you like a more mature and deeper db story
If I wanted to see a more mature retelling of the original story, I could always write one myself.
If I want to see more mature plot lines in the future? Sure, why not? The series always does well when it tries to be more mature (the two specials, for instance). But I don't think that's happening until Toriyama leaves.

Re: Would you like a more mature and deeper db story
Depends what you understand by "mature". If you mean more like the Bardock and Trunks specials, of course. But philosopical themes or world commentary... I don't think that's Dragon Ball's cup of tea. However, if by deep you mean heartfelt, yes, it would be great. The character interactions have been the series' forte from the start, so adding some actual drama (not "bad guy killed my friend for the billionth time" type of drama) could work.

I would love to see (and possibly write myself) a Dragon Ball story with deep philosophical themes. Just not from Toriyama, because the man has no desire to do such a story. That's not his style, and I doubt he'd do well if forced into such a story.

Dragon Ball is good because it is reflective of a strong personality, that of Toriyama Akira. A 'serious' Dragon Ball story would be in conflict with Dragon Ball, the extension of Toriyama Akira, but if from the heart of a good creator such a thing may be of interesting.
Re: Would you like a more mature and deeper db story
Of course not done by toriyama lol the guy just doesn't care about that and he has said it like a million times but I would certainly like to see a deeper narrative done by a writer who loves the series

We've seen "serious" stories done with the franchise without Toriyama that have worked out fine, like the Bardock special. There's not any "conflict."JulieYBM wrote:Dragon Ball is good because it is reflective of a strong personality, that of Toriyama Akira. It is in conflict with Dragon Ball, it is totally not the sort of work Toriyama could create. The special simply happens to be something we like.Kamiccolo9 wrote:We've seen "serious" stories done with the franchise without Toriyama that have worked out fine, like the Bardock special. Sure. I certainly wouldn't mind a more mature and deeper story for Dragon Ball, as long as it handled properly and naturally.

Re: Would you like a more mature and deeper db story
History of Trunks and the Bardock Special are films that are pretty dark. But Dragonball is so cliche. We know the end result: Bad guy comes, Goku beats him (with the exception of the Cell Arc).
I mean, Toriyama has a gigantic supporting cast, and with the exception of the upcoming Champa Arc we finally see some diversity in the fighters, but for Pete's sake give us a twist at the end of an Arc and let someone else save the day.

Re: Would you like a more mature and deeper db story
Toriyama didn't seem to mind it, seeing as he liked it well enough to include aspects of it in his own work. I figure he knows what "conflicts" with his work better than you or I do, at least at that point in time.JulieYBM wrote:It is in conflict with Dragon Ball, it is totally not the sort of work Toriyama could create. Toriyama may have created Dragon Ball, but the franchise has grown to be more than just him at this point. Toriyama would never have created the video games. Do they "conflict" with Dragon Ball? Does the anime? What does "conflict" even mean in this context? The Cell Arc is as far from the early DB stuff as you can get, tonally. Does that "conflict?"

Re: Would you like a more mature and deeper db story
Honestly, slightly more mature would be great something like the Resurrection "F" movie, dark atmosphere but restrains the gag elements of Dragon Ball to mostly dialogue and interactions. I feel like Super is going way too over the top in the light and gaggy department.

I actually thought that was what the F movie was going to be until more details about it came out.

Re: Would you like a more mature and deeper db story
Bardock: The Father of Goku and History of Trunks do that pretty well for me... but yeah, I'd be down for a more "mature and deeper" story for DB.
Like said above, RoF seemed like that at first but then we saw more revealed of the plot.

Re: Would you like a more mature and deeper db story
Of course I would. I'd prefer it a million times over what we've actually gotten.
A darker, more serious tone works better for this franchise, imo. They'd need really good writers if they went the mature philosophical route some mentioned here, though.

Re: Would you like a more mature and deeper db story
Does anyone here follow any scenario writers in the industry? Like does anyone have anybody they'd suggest for a job like that? I know there's those who follow animators, but I don't know if there's something similar for scenario writers. I've started following Super's writers to help me guess how their episodes will go before they air, but I realize that's not the same.

Not… really? I like DB *because* it is silly and whimsical. Sure, I read the serious fanfic retelling here and there because I love the DB world and there is always room for more what ifs? but that is not what I want from Toriyama. I wouldn't mind "serious" in the sense of some world-building stuff being *way* more detailed, but not thematically serious -- at least not beyond History of Trunks. Like, before I knew DB:Evolution was going to be crap, they showed shots of Bulma in her lab, or how the folding bike folded up, that sort of "hard scifi" detail I would appreciate. And like I recently saw a AU Trunks Youtube film that was well made and pretty serious.
But I don't want to see the RRA army arc as a dark and gritty Yakuza film with robots and ninja assassins (ok, now that I *say* that outlod, maybe I *do* want to see that… but I still see that movie in sort of B-movie amusing glory in my head). I guess, I wouldn't mind a realistically detailed portrayal or these arcs of the nitty gritty detail I crave, but I'm not sure I would want to see a story where General Red had serious motivations, or the Freeza arc as written by Heinlein. I want serious detail, just not serious themes.

Path to Power sort of already showcased a more serious version of the RRA arc. I love that movie. :3

Re: Would you like a more mature and deeper db story
I don't need deep story telling, but I'd like more substance yes. I like simple, but not when it's too simple or too repetitive. It's why Beerus and Whis as characters I like, til they decide to have their food boners on proud display over and over again that I roll my eyes at how boring that is. I'm almost shocked the U6 tourney is not simply a cook off event.
Why Dragon Ball Consistency in something such as power levels matter!

Re: Would you like a more mature and deeper db story
I'm fine with the current tone that we have. The story has never really been mature or deep, so I don't really care for a "mature" story. If it does happen, then sure, as long as they do it right.
