What is the Best Animated Episode of all times?

Post by chickensguys » Fri Feb 05, 2016 12:21 am

What is the best animated episode of Dragon Ball(Including Z,GT), excluding the movies. I am not even talking about a good episode (It could be filler), but merely the best episode from an aesthetic perspective. I hope to find some sort of consensus.

DBZ Ep 276: Where is the Exit?! Buu's Reverse Transformation

The artistry & animation is on par with Z Films. Goku & Vegeta stayed "on model", while Super Buu was creepy as hell (filler scenes showcased his mind-games @ SSJ Goku)

TOEI must've used their A-Team for this particular episode as it brings Kid Buu, series final villain at tail end of this episode

I am torn between DBZ Episode 179 and DBZ Episode 232. Both episodes include fantastic art and animation. I cannot pick between the two, I love both of them so much.

Goku vs Cell fight is always a joy to watch, same with Pure Boo fight.

DBZ Episode 179. The battle between Goku vs Cell is just glorious. There has never been a better animated battle in Dragon Ball than that one. Also, Dragon Ball Z Episode 279 deserves a very special, because of how spectacular SSJ2 Goku and Kid Boo was. Man, Studio Cockpit were just so awesome. And responsible for most of the animation highlights of the entire DBZ anime. As far as Toei Animation animated episode in itself goes, it doesn't get any better than DBZ Episode 64. Vegeta vs Recoome was magnificent and that episode was the first DBZ episode that was truly on model from start to finish, in my opinion. DBZ Episode 232 also needs a major shout out because of how wicked awesome SSJ2 Goku vs SSJ2 Majin Vegeta was.

Episode 120, where Trunks goes SSJ and kills Freeza is one of the best pieces of animation out there.

Definitely Episode 64. It's 24 minutes of pure quality. Well animated, and it's the closest thing to Toriyama's manga brought to life.

Nakatsuru absolutely nails it.

No one episode really blows my mind as a whole. Dragon Ball lacks episodes like Yuu Yuu Hakusho, Bleach or Naruto where the entire episode is packed full of good animation. I suppose the closest would be Dragon Ball Z Episode #179 and Episode #279 thanks to Masunaga Keisuke, Iwane Masa'aki and the rest of Studio Cockpit combining background animation with their fierce character drawings. Even so, the overall effect simply isn't as strong as those other series.

DBZ 120 is an excellent example in how the camera can make limited animation look dynamic. The motion of the camera in the first half's dialogue scenes adds a lot of tension to the scenes, making them look visually dynamic and impressive. The on-model art only adds to this, making for very pretty-looking eye candy despite not too much motion is occurring. It's a wonderfully-drawn episode, and one I often use in teaching to illustrate limited animation's strengths.

Goku didn't die in GT. The show sucked him off so much, it was impossible to keep him in the world of the living, so he ascended beyond mortality.

DBZ 279 for sure. This episode looks like the movie 12 crew took a break and animated a regular episode. Its really a one of the kind animation day.
