4:3 vs 16:9 poll
Re: 4:3 vs 16:9 poll
I like everything cropped into a center triangle regardless of its original aspect ratio. It just looks better that way. And it fills up all the space on my strange, triangular TV.

When FUNimation did their survey, everybody believed that majority voted for 16:9.
The real goal is something that is not welcomed here, so I cannot explain it.

I voted in your poll, Kojiro Sasaki, but I feel you're being needlessly unclear with your posts here.

Actually, a former FUNimation employee admitted on Twitter that 4:3 won the poll, but they chose to ignore it anyway.Kojiro Sasaki wrote:When FUNimation did their survey, everybody believed that majority voted for 16:9.

I will never forgive FUNimation for that 4:3/16:9 survey debacle. Re: 4:3 vs 16:9 poll
Weren't those films shown in 16:9 when they premiered on the screen? I may've been wrong in suggesting that they were made solely to be seen in widescreen, but it seems like that aspect ratio was in mind when the animators worked on the films.Kojiro Sasaki wrote: Can you remind me from where this info came from? If you ask me, I don't think that early movies (DB1-3, DBZ1-3) were meant to be seen in 16:9: http://screenshotcomparison.com/comparison/110232 - looks like random center crop.
I still think, for the most part, that the cropping makes the movies look too tight, but The Dead Zone actually turned out the best imo.

If you ask me, I don't see any difference between the series and the movies*. To me, both look like made with 4:3 in mind.

From Kanzenshuu's own "Dragon Box Significance" page - http://www.kanzenshuu.com/features/funi ... nificance/
Kei has noted that the movies have been shown theatrically in 4:3 before, I believe. So whether that holds any weight on the matter, I don't know.

For what it's worth, for the first two DB movies, they vertically shifted the OP to make for better widescreen framing when centre-cropping, and adding huge awkward borders when watching it in 4:3.
What were those 4:3 shots taken from? They look really nice.

Re: 4:3 vs 16:9 poll
DB/Z/GT shows: 4:3 OAR, so no picture is cropped.
Movies: 16:9 OAR, as they were intended to be seen in theaters.
DBZ Kai: 16:9. Since the whole point of the show is to refresh it for modern sensibilities, I actually wish Funi released the widescreen version.
DB Super: 16:9. As a new production, I assume that's OAR.

Re: 4:3 vs 16:9 poll
You can always adjust the settings on your TV and switch to widescreen if your watching the Funimation Kai DVDs/Blu-Rays. I think the fact it was released internationally in full screen just goes to show there's nothing stopping Funimation from releasing DBZ in 4:3, they just refuse to.Zillamon51 wrote: DBZ Kai: 16:9. Do you have any info about international non-English broadcasts about the Dragon Ball anime or manga translations/editions? Please message me. Researching for a future book with Dragon Ball scholar Derek Padula

Re: 4:3 vs 16:9 poll
The biggest problem with that being that Kai was selectively panned and scanned, and you can only center crop a DVD or Blu-ray. You also will not get anything extra on the sides, and it will be lower resolution (640x360 instead of 853x480 on DVD, for example).Dragon Ball Ireland wrote:You can always adjust the settings on your TV and switch to widescreen if your watching the Funimation Kai DVDs/Blu-Rays. Hey Puto! Shots were taken from DBZ Movie 1 trailer (from Dragon Box: The Movies).Puto wrote:What were those 4:3 shots taken from? They look really nice.
Re: 4:3 vs 16:9 poll
Here's why I believe the films were intended for cropping. The following images are from DBZ Movie 2.
Top: Dutch dub in 4:3
Bottom: Dragon Box in 16:9
Look at the top image. Look at all that wasted space. The bottom image has all of that space filled up.

Re: 4:3 vs 16:9 poll
While I am in the camp that 4:3 is best, I'm not super hardcore about this debate. I've seen footage from the Dragon Boxes, the Level sets and the more recent Season sets, and it doesn't really bother me all that much. Yes, I know we technically lose 25% of the picture when it is cropped, but it truly just doesn't bother me all that much. To each his own, I suppose.
