Discussion regarding the entirety of the franchise in a general (meta) sense, including such aspects as: production, trends, merchandise, fan culture, and more.
The casuals all throughout the internet keep linking Gohan to Yamcha over and over, joking how Gohan might be Yamcha's son instead due to the similarities:
and
All of a sudden this meme is everywhere. Its like the new, "Krillin is dead again!" or "Yamcha sux!!!!11!11111" meme's the casual spread through the internet.
Honestly, it annoys the piss out of me any time I see it. Gohan doesn't "look like Yamcha" (and certainly isn't his secret offspring), he looks like a dozen or more Toriyama characters. The man loves to recycle design elements and has been doing so since before Dr. Slump.
So, for the most part, I just try to ignore it and stay away from places it would be seen more commonly..

This reinforces the unknown truth that Super's Gohan has been pre-destined to suffer the same fate as Yamucha.
In terms of relevance & left in the dust thing. The more I come across these memes, the more it convinces me of the hunch
@DevilsCorpse
I completly disagree on Toriyama "recycling" designs part. Toriyama may not be a great story-teller, but I'll be darned if his designs aren't original & distinct in anime history
Reason being you can't pinpoint one character to looking EXACTLY as another character in DragonBa.
Unlike FMAB or Inuyasha. You have Hawkeye lookalike almost everywhere. To say nothin about how Kagome & Kikyo designs being "recycled" with even random filler, side characters lookin like them
Probably just another way for non-fans to deride something the popularity of which they cannot/ will not understand, and of which they refuse to approve. Sad, really, but then these sorts of meme-things always are to some extent.
But to say Toriyama doesn't recycle designs is clearly inaccurate given all the evidence.
Vijay wrote:Reason being you can't pinpoint one character to looking EXACTLY as another character in DragonBa.
No, but you can do it for virtually any other Toriyama series. He's flat-out acknowledged how he's stolen character designs from previous series to use wholesale in Dragon Ball.
Part of the problem here is the shortsightedness with focusing exactly on Dragon Ball. OK, so some of Gohan's looks are similar to Yamcha's. Take a step back. Yamcha himself is just a carbon-copy of Tsun Tsukutsun from Dr. Slump.
There are all the obvious other examples people point to (God in Dr. Slump -> the Turtle Sage in Dragon Ball; Dabra in Dragon Ball -> the devil in Sandland), but the list truly does go on and on and on.

There's definitely something going on between Yamcha and Chi-Chi. I mean, Gohan also has Chi-Chi's skin and hair color on top of styling it similar to Yamcha's.

Goku didn't die in GT. The show sucked him off so much, it was impossible to keep him in the world of the living, so he ascended beyond mortality.

I'm just about done with the concept of reboots and making shows that were products of their time and impactful "new and sexy" and in line with modern tastes and sensibilities. Let stuff stay in their era and give today's kids their own shit to watch.
I always side eye the people who say "Now my kids/today's kids can experience what I did as a child!" Nigga, who gives a fuck about your childhood? You're an adult now and it was at least 15 years ago. Let the kids have their own experience instead of picking at a corpse.

Not it doesn't. There is no "unknown truth" about what will lie ahead for Gohan in terms of plot relevance. He'll become relevant to the plot when he needs to be. Just like every other character.

But the fact that there are still people reading the series after all this time… All I can say is; “thank you.” Really, that’s all.

And that you also have IMMENSELY skewed and comically backwards priorities in what you think is most important and needed to make a good Dragon Ball story.

This isn't new though, it's been talked about since people were still making Over 9000 memes, or Krillin dying jokes.
Oh, you think the Grand Tour is your ally, you merely stepped into the Grand Tour. I was born in it, moulded by it. I didn’t see the Super until I was already a man; by then, it was nothing to me but blinding!
I don't mind the "Gohan looks kinda like Yamcha" thing nearly as much as I mind the term "casuals," especially when used in that obnoxious dismissive I'm-better-than-these-people-because-I-say-so sort of way. Which seems to be the only sense the word "casual" is ever used anymore on the Internet. Think it's about time to retire that word, at least when used in reference to fans of a thing/people who play a video game/etc. rather than like... clothes or something.
(And yeah, comparing Gohan to Yamcha is not at all new. Goten too -- I remember the "what if he's secretly Yamcha's kid rather than Goku's" thing being said about Goten in the past, what with him being born while Goku was dead and all.)

That's clearly false.
a lot characters in Dragon ball look exactly alike. They share the exact same face & body types.
The Saiyan characters are mostly clones of each other, especially when they turn super saiyan. Most of the females have the same structure. The only thing that distinguishes a lot of these characters is the hair.

I'm in the generation of fans that started with Toonami, so I totally empathize with the feeling of having "missed the party", experiencing disappointment, and wanting to experience it myself. But I can't, that's how life is. Time is a bitch. The party is over. Kageyama, Kikuchi, and Maeda are off the sauce now; Yanami almost OD'd; Yamamoto got arrested; Toriyama's not going to light trash cans on fire and hang from the chandelier anymore. We can't get the band back together, and even if we could, everyone's either old, in poor health, or calmed way the fuck down. Best we're going to get, and are getting, is a party that's almost entirely devoid of the magic that made the original one so awesome that we even want more.

Rocketman wrote:"Shonen" basically means "stupid sentimental shit" anyway, so it's ok to be anti-shonen.
I think it's absolutely stupid. Gohan and Yamcha are the two male characters in DB that change their hairstyle often - of COURSE there'd be overlap!
Not to mention the people who say it's "proof" Gohan is going to have the same role in the plot as Yamcha. As someone who wants to be hopeful Gohan will be somewhat relevant, this just annoys me.
I could have gotten into anything...and yet I chose the story aimed at young Japanese boys about martial arts, and later about super-powerful aliens punching each other really hard.
To be fair Gohan and Yamcha do have the most similar hairstyles of any other characters who aren't related. I mean besides Goten looking like Goku, what two characters had the same amount of haircuts in this many designs?
Drawing room theories and fun aside, Gohan does look too much like Yamcha in much of the Boo saga. Not because Yamcha's got a bad design, but because Gohan's waaay too buff for a fey, bookish guy, even as a teenager. The extreme reversal in RoF isn't an improvement, but I don't think either approach does him justice.
Xeztin wrote:Let's give the devil his due and say Gohan is Yamcha's son. So... How do we explain the tail?
He glued it with Super Glue and he could move it since it got connected to his spine somehow

These days people start throwing the words "filler" and "silce of life" everytime characters aren't punching each other. No matter if something is moving the plot or there's character exposition.
Imagine if DB started these days. It would go like this:
"hey, what's happening in Dragon Ball today?"
"Goku wants Mutenroshi to train him, so he's bringing him some chicks now."
"oh i see, just slice of life filler then. skippable. "
When the very first promotional image(s) came out for Resurrection F, I legit thought that tracksuit Gohan was Yamcha until someone else told me that it was actually Gohan.
Wasn't ever really conscious of their visual similarity until that happened.
