Funi's interesting sub translation

I realized this almost by accident when I noticed somthing that didn't make much sense to me. That would be a certain little innocent line in one of the DBZ episodes that made me wonder why it wasn't translated the same way the Spanish was. The perticular line is from the scene when Bulma, Kuririn, and Maestro Roshi were all in the airplane thing and Maestro Roshi says that Kuririn should inform Chichi of Goku's death. He then asks why they won't do it and Bulma says in the Spanish version: "Porque no queremos morir" which is "because we don't want to die". In the Japanese subtitled version there is a different angle given to this. It says that Kuririn should be carefull because Bulma warns him that Leche (Ok...Chichi you pervs.) is a "education minded mama" or some other off topicesque comment. My question is: How is this supposed to make Kuririn afraid to tell her that Goku is dead? I don't know why but all I know is it's Spanish version 1 to Daimao's Japanese sub version's 0.

Translating Japanese to English is different than translating Japanese to Spanish I think. Also like it is with English dubs, there's also the whole deal with lip syncing.

That kinda sounds like a translation taken from the Japanese version... only that it's not so much that Goku is dead, but that Gohan was kidnapped by Piccolo. Being a "kyouiku-mama" (education-minded mother), anything that takes Gohan away from his studies is a certifiable Bad Thing™. (Yes, Japanese has a word for mothers obsessed with the minutiae of their children's upbringing and education. Go figure.) Of course, I don't have that volume of the manga with me, so I can't check and see what is actually said in the Japanese series.

It's somthing about being alergic to death that's for sure. With Leche (sí...Chichi) you can never tell by any strech of the imagination. Even Bulma turned a machine gun on the guys for not waking up on time to see the newly repaired scouter. In hindsight all Chichi did was faint upon hearing the news so there wasn't much to worry about he he he.

Is "Leche" pronounced like "Leeech"? I remember hearing Goku say her name after watching a few Spanish episodes YEARS ago, and he sounded like he was saying "Milk", like the english word. "MEEEEELK!" O_o;

Actually, I think they did that on purpose. I've heard the same thing in my copy of Cooler's Revenge. Are there like, two different versions of her name in Spanish? "Milk" and "Leche"? (Though either way, it looks like they didn't stray too far from the idea of her original name... o__O)

I'm sure Bardock the Mexican is a Mexican. And no Mexico has yet to release any DVD's. I've been asking family that I have down there to look if there is anything, and they've told me that there's nothing. Quite unfortunate actually cause I love the Spanish dub.

I saw the first appearance of Mecha Frieza in 1998 on Telemundo. Huge spoiler, especially since the series was only upto the Namek Saga, but my friend who told me about it being on Telemundo was also telling me about SSJ3 and DBGT.
It was only 1998 and he had seen the entire trilogy in Mexico already. O_o

I was introduced to Spanish DBZ through Telemundo as well. At the time that Cartoon Network was airing the Majin Buu saga, Telemundo was airing the Cell saga. It only aired on Sunday mornings at 5 and 5:30. They abruptly stopped after a few episodes though.

I always tried to find more DBZ on Telemundo after I had seen that episode, but unfortunately, Phoenix's TV guide sucked ass, and was wrong, and never even said it was on for that day

But yes, I would like the Mexican dub on DVD. I only hope they go for an english subtitle track lol. I thought it was awesome that the UUE's had the Spanish dub (Or one of them), but unfortunately it didn't have a subtitle track of it's own.

The Spanish dub stays pretty close to the original Japanese version. So you probably could just watch it with Daimao's translations. On the UUE's of course, and on the Cooler's Revenge DVD.

That is correct. She is indeed called Milk and not Leche.

I know that Towers Entertainment has released a few DVDs. They have released 2 Dragon Ball Z DVDs, La Fusión de Goku y Vegeta and El Ataque del Dragón and the GT special La Legendaria Esfera de 4 Estrellas with the Mexican dub and I think the original Japanese language track. Unfortunately they don't ship to the US. I might consider buying these before I go to Mexico next winter.

Never seen any DBZ DVDs here in Mexico. Only thing we had were the Brolli movie and Taurus movie on tape because both were shown in theatures here. And also a 3-pack of all 3 Dragonball movies on tape.
